WCF Web Service Data Members Defaulting To Null?

Apr 29, 2010

I am new to WCF and created a simple REST service to accept an order object (series of strings from XML file), insert that data into a database, and then return an order object that contains the results. To test the service I created a small web project and send over a stream created from an xml doc. The problem is that even though all of the items in the xml doc get placed into the stream, the service is nullifying some of them when it receives the data. For example lineItemId will have a value but shipment status will show null. I step through the xml creation and verify that all the values are being sent. However, if I clear the datamembers and change the names around, it can work. This is the interface code

[ServiceContract(Namespace="http://companyname.com/wms/")]
public interface IShipping
{

Security :: Filtering Members List / Only Members Whose Name Contains The Typed Characters Will Show Up In The Gridview?

Apr 28, 2010

Our site has a page for maintenance of existing members (e.g. adding / changing roles, etc.)This page currently uses a gridview to show a complete list of all members, based on GetMembers() method to populate it.However, as the number of users has grown to several hundred, it has become difficult to locate a particular user by paging through several pages.Is there a way to narrow down this list, maybe with a filtering textbox, so that as you start typing into that textbox, only members whose name contains the typed characters will show up in the gridview?

Databases :: Sql .net Connector Membership Provider Defaulting MinRequiredNonAlphanumericCharacters?

Mar 10, 2011

I just downloaded and installed the most recent MySQL .net connector, 6.3.6 and it connects to the DB just fine. My problem is with the web.config settings I have set for it. It seems that theMinRequiredNonAlphanumericCharacters property is hard coded to '1'.I've changed this to 0, 5, or any other number. I even setup a web page to just display the properties of the provider. If I change the values in the web.config, the values update. It seems that MinRequiredNonAlphanumericCharacters won't change.

[Code]....

Again, the DB connection works just fine, reason I did not post the connection string. The min password length at 44 was just for testing.

[Code]....

Of the three I only tested, only MinRequiredNonAlphanumericCharacters stays at '1' no matter what I change it to in the web.config. I even changed it to 'abcd' and received no .NET runtime errors. Me thinks it is hard coded some where or I'm not using the right property name in the web.config. I copied the web.config value straight from the example in the documentation that came with the MySQL .net connector.

Web Service Returning XML Result And Nodevalue Is Always Null?

May 25, 2010

I have an ASP.NET web service which returns an XMLDocument. The web service is called from a Firefox extension using XMLHttpRequest.

var serviceRequest = new XMLHttpRequest();
serviecRequest.setRequestHeader("Content-Type", "text/xml; charset=utf-8");

I consume the result using responseXML. So far so good. But when I iterate through the XML I retrieve nodeValue - nodeValue is always null. When I check the nodeType the nodeType is type 1 (Node.ELEMENT_NODE == 1).

Node.NodeValue states all nodes of type Element will return null.

In my webservice I have created a string with the XML i.e. xml="Hank"

I then create the XmlDocument
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();
doc.LoadXML(string);

I know I can specify the nodetype using using CreateNode. But when I am just building the xml by appending string values is there a way to change the nodeType to Text so Node.nodeValue will be "content of the text node".

WCF / ASMX :: Accessing A Published Web Service Gives Null Ref Exception?

Sep 2, 2010

I have an Asp.net web service that I created using Visual Studio 2005. I can acess the web service in my test environment, call methods and return data as expected. If this web service is published to the outside world (Outside of the company firewall), it will return a null why this might be happening? The same code is being used,against the same database. The only difference is that the published website is giving back the null reference exception. If I type in the URL for the web service "https://secure.theSiteGeist.com/wsIndigo.asmx" a list of methods for the web service is displayed in my browser. Yet if I try and call any methods on the web service I get back the null reference exception. Note that the URL I posted above is not the real name of my web service, but is just used for reference sake.

WCF / ASMX :: Client DataContract Has Empty/null Values From Service?

I have a simple WCF service that returns the time from the server. I've confirmed that data is being sent by checking with Fiddler. Here's the result object xml that my service sends according to fiddler.

Literally the only difference is the namespaces within the application. But still the values being returned are null, empty or a .NET default.

C# - Ajax Enabled WCF Service Not Defined / Value Must Not Be Null For Controls And Behaviors

Feb 12, 2010

[URL] I created an AJAX-enabled WCF service to call from a web form. the thing is that after creating it, I'm able to populate my dropdown from the items returned by the service.

but 2 hours later, I get this FireFox error message when loading the page :

"Error: Sys.ArgumentException: Value must not be null for Controls and Behaviors.
Parameter name: element
Source File: http://localhost:50403/ThunderWeb2 /ScriptResource.axd?d=Htwz5SPOGy46DsuOfFL3pQa8Lr5_3hMVD_cps_d3FYg4iWXeG_0-3bdA95LxuQtbXGUXoHUpV1SV8q4FusAyWjJpsaLk2b6TFO_NfpB_3ro1&t=ffffffffbb99ee49

and also this :

Error: ThunderServ is not defined
Source File: http://localhost:50403/ThunderWeb2/Thunder/new_recording.aspx
Line: 105

I delete the service and recreate it with the same code and then it runs fine. but after a while, (1 hour or so), the service isn't defined anymore, I get the error.

HttpHandlers / Modules :: Session Null In Module Event (PreRequestHandlerExecute) For .asmx Web Service ?

I have a module that subscribes to PreRequestHandlerExecute event, which uses the Session object. When i set the webconfig compilationdebug flag to false, the Session object is null when making requests to the web service. It works fine for .aspx requests, but only have problems for .asmx. When i set the debug flag to true everything works fine. I need to set this flag to false for production, but can't seem to get it work.I'm using II7 and the integrated pipeline, so this event will fire for all requests.

Forms Data Controls :: Displaying A Null Or Empty Cell For A Null Datetime Database Value In Gridview?

Dec 6, 2010

I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?

I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.

Architecture :: WCF Service Be Used To Receive Data As Needed From A Remote Sender Or Service?

Feb 25, 2011

I am not sure which approach I should use. I have a web application that needs to get/receive data from a third party application that is in a secure remote network. The data needs to be secure during transport. The data layers cannot be exposed and the databases will not talk to each other. The data will be received from remote application on demand, or will get at scheduled intervals.

I have looked at WCF, but not sure if this will work. Can a WCF service be used to receive data as needed from a remote sender or service? Is this a secure way of doing it? I have also looked at SFTP using some XML/XSLT, but I don't think this is the right way to go. In addition, some data may be transported from my web application to the remote application (mostly reports at first). What protocols are used to transfer data between HIPAA compliant applications?

Possible To Return Large Data From WCF Service To Web Service

Feb 3, 2010

we have console-hosted WCF Service and ASP.NET WEB Service (on IIS).
After some tough operation WCF Service must return some data(large data) to ASP.NET Web Service for next processing. I tested on small results - everything is ok.
But after testing on real data(serialized result object is near 4.5 mb) error occurs on ASP.NET Web Service (which is client in wcf-client-server communication).

Messages size are configured by next binding (on server and client):
NetTcpBinding netTcpBinding = new NetTcpBinding();
netTcpBinding.TransactionFlow = true;
netTcpBinding.SendTimeout = new TimeSpan(0, 4,0, 0);
netTcpBinding.Security.Mode = SecurityMode.None;

Can Use Automapper And Private Members

Mar 23, 2011

Can it handle mapping using private members like NHibernate can? The documentation is very slim, but it seems like one of the objects or methods provided with the tool could do something like this.

Mapper
.With<FooDTO>()
.Map(x => x.Value)
.To<Foo>("_value");
// To<T>(string member) or To<T>(Func<T, bool> func)
Mapper.CreateMap<Foo, FooDTO>();

I know my example methods don't exist as-is, but maybe I've overlooked something else already built in.

Security :: Create Different Profiles For Different Members?

Nov 10, 2010

I have searched for an answer to my problem and could not find an answer anywhere.

I am rebuilding a website (converting it to use masterpages, usercontrols, asp.net memberships, etc using asp.net 4.0 C#) that has two different types of users. The problem is, the two different users have different roles ie. customers and employeers. Depending
on the role the user is assigned to they will have different things that should be stored in their profile.

For instance a customer would have all the basic elements of a profile, name, address, phone, etc. But it would also have some extra stuff like, a little bit about themselves, their resume, where they went to school, etc. On the other hand an employer would
have the basic elements but it would include details such as the position, a description of the position, contact for that position, etc.

Is there any way to have multiple profiles and still use the asp.net sql membership and profile provider?

Lock A Record When Two Members Are Trying To Access It?

Jul 5, 2010

I have the scenario like this,

My environment is .Net2.0, VS 2008, Web Application

I need to lock a record when two members are trying to access at the same time.

We can do it in two ways,

By Front end (putting the sessionID and record unique number in the dictionary and keeping it as a static or application variable), we will release when the response is go out of that page, client is not connected, after the post button is clicked and session is out. By backend (record locking in the DB itself - need to study - my team member is looking ).

Is there any others to ways to do and do I need to look at other ways in each and every steps?
