View 4 RepliesI'm new to all of this, so go easy on me. This should be an easy one. I have created a custom SmartContentBlock user control for a CMS.The control works, but only if I invoke the Fill() function in the Page_init event in the codebehind of the ASPX page. My goal is to modify the class file so that the Fill() in the codebehind is no longer neccesary. So, for reference, here's the gist of the current situtation.Controls.cs
[Code]....
ASPX Page
[Code]....
<% @
Register
src="myControl2.ascx"
tagname="myControl2"
tagprefix="uc4" %>
Page_Load(object sender,
EventArgs e)
{
myControl2 mc = new myControl2();
//is there anything wrong with the preceding way? Why ever use LoadControl?
Control myLC = LoadControl("myControl2.ascx");
//Why ever do it the LoadControl way?
}
I have what is probably a basic question but I do not understand if/why there is a difference. I have a simple asp.net page with a staticly created DropDownList and Panel control. The user can select one of three options if the drop down (Employee, Company, Address) which should load the respective custom UserControl into the panel below. By default, I have the Employee control selected in the drop down and it should be displayed on the intial Page Load (!Page.IsPostBack).
If I do the following it performs the desired behavior on the intial load:
[Code]....
If I try the following, the User Control does not appear on the initial page load:
[Code]....
I noticed if I do it with a textbox instead of a UserControl, it works however:
[Code]....
I assume there is some sort of behavioral difference in the way the loading is done between a UserControl and WebControl.
I have a user control (ascx file) that contains an interface for users to change the data retrieved from the db. So, I am displaying data and most of this data can be edited by the user. When the user enters text into a textbox, and clicks "Save Changes", the value they typed in is lost and not persisted to the database. I realize now this is because the SaveChanges button does a postback, and the user control gets reloaded with its original valuesbefore the code within my SaveChanges button gets executed. I'm not sure if there are properties I need to set to save the input data, or if I need to write my own code to do it. What is the generally accepted method to do this? (Also, all of the controls in the ascx file are wrapped in an Update Panel.)
View 8 RepliesI have a 2 page signup form, on each page the form fields are seperated into sections. Each section is a user control, and there are 2 controls on each page. My question is, how do I get the data from page A to B. I'll be using a webservice to insert the data into SQL so I'm not worried about that portion of the process.
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Configuration; [code]....
First, I would like to apologize, the search on the site wasn't working, so I don't know if I'm missing an existing post or not.
I have a web page that uses a master page file. I am using a third party control from Component One(TabStrip), the tabs are rendered as links on the final page. When a tab(link) is clicked, I need to load the appropriate web user control associated with that tab. Each web user control has its own post backs and methods. I know that I can load the controls on the "SelectionChanged" event of the TabStrip control, but then any postback created by the web user control that is loaded causes the page to refresh and the control was never loaded in viewstate. So, I tried to put my procedure of loading the web user control into the page_init method. This would work, if I could read which link was clicked on from within the page_init method. I tried using a javascript function to run "onclick" of the tabs and within it setting the value of a hidden control. I have verified that the javascript works and that the hidden control's value is getting set correctly. When I get into the page_init method, the value of the hidden control is not readable.
I'm tying to understand the page lifecycle to the fullest, but I don't see what I'm missing here. I know that I need to load the web user controls in the page_init method in order to persist the page as a whole, but how can I get which tab(link) was clicked to know which control should be loaded?
Header controls like create ,delete are created by using templated user controls (ITemplate) .
The controls are working in all pages except the last page when paging is enabled in grid view.
I have a user control with a textbox and a gridview. When data is entered into textbox it has to get data from the database and populate in the gridview. The grid view has add,edit and delete events.The user control is loaded dynamically multiple times on to the page.My issue is when i have 2 or more user controls and if textbox of usercontrol1 is changed, it reloads both the controls and fires the postback event of textbox twice each for the user control, where as it has to execute only once. due to which the data modifications in the grid are lost as it pulls back the data once again from the database.
View 3 RepliesI would like to convert some aspx code in user controls. This would lead me to having a master user control that contains other controls inside.
The contained user controls have datasource with some control parameters that takes the value from a control present in the aspx (now) and that will then moved in the container user control.
which is the best way to handle a scenario like this?
I have a custom control which inherit from the Table class and in the constructor, it takes a an integer as an argument. There is no empty constructor.
Is there a way for the user to set that variable in the properties window after they drag the control onto a form.
I know some .NET controls, you can set the source for the parameter to different things like another control's property, QueryString using just the properties window.
Right now, I have to create the control dynamically. I read the query string and then created the object.
What's the difference between Basic Authentication and Integrated Windows Authentication in IIS?
View 3 RepliesI'm looking to implement my own basic webforms authentication. I don't want to use the 'membership' features in this case because I don't want to modify the database schema with all the membership elements that I won't use, and I don't need to support users across multiple applications. I want to wind up with one simple 'users' table that has username, password, passwordSalt, and several other fields to support custom user attributes specific to this application.
I was looking at this:
http://www.xoc.net/works/tips/forms-authentication.asp
but it's rather dated... is this still valid? I'm looking for guidance on what I need to do to implement a custom webforms auth solution. A very basic skeleton I can expand upon, or a good tutorial/guide that illustrates the necessary parts... just the basics..
We have Novell's Access Manager protecting our site. After the user logs in, Access Manager forwards the request back to a web page. On that web page, I need to read a combination of some Basic Auth username information as well as some custom header variablest that AM is passing to the web page. AM will continue to send these variables/values on every page as long as the user stays logged in.
What I'd like to do is create a class that checks for these values to evaluate whether the user is logged in or not. How do I gain access to those variables from a .cs class file?
I have created a user control and am ready to convert it into a custom control. I am trying to follow:
[URL] the steps mentioned in the link.
I am not seeing Build / Publish Web Site option.
I am using VS 2008. I only see Publish User Control but it doesn't give all the settings mentioned below. When I do publish user control, it just copies the ascx file to the desired location. how can I convert the user control to custom control.
I am trying to build a custom composite control, which allows me to add custom content to each child control. It's a similar concept to what you have with a GridView and TemplateColumn. The markup used to place the control on the page would end up being something like this:
[Code]....
I have the code below, which allows me to put that markup on the page without throwing any errors, and it renders all the correct HTML, except it doesn't render the contents of the ColumnTemplate. I have replaced the Render() code with a comment because it's quite long winded and doesn't add anything important here:
[Code]....
I have tried to follow examples on MSDN and other forums but I can't make this work. I think I'm missing the code to render the contents of the template, but I don't know how to hook that up.
I have some (probably very basic) questions about developing custom controls. I am wanting to derive a set of button controls, and the first one I have started on is a "DeleteButton", that has a additional property (DeleteConfirmationText) that is built into the OnClientClick attribute. To get that added, I overrode the Render method as follows:
[Code]....
This all works well. Now, I will add some logic to make sure that there is some text in the DeleteConfirmationText property, but that isn't the intent of my question.
What I am also wanting to do is to override some of the default property values, so I added that to the default constructor:
[Code]....
Now, in the designer in VS2008, and I look at the properties for the control, there isn't a default value shown in the "Properties" section, and the Causesvalidation still shows the underlying classes default value of "True". As well, in design mode, where the GridView control that containse my DeleteButton control would be displayed, there is an error box "There was an error rendering the control. 'Are you certain you want to delete this attorney?' cound not be set on property 'DeleteConfirmationText'. Here's the markup where I am defining the deletebutton control:
[Code]....
What am I doing wrong?
I know that how to create custom control and add custom property.
I want to create property like DataSource to my custom control.
I have a WebUserControl, let's call it "BaseControl.ascx" that acts as a base control for a custom control (a class that inherits BaseControl). Inside BaseControl I have a couple of regular controls (for example a DropDownList called 'dropdown'), which I try to populate in the inheriting control:
csharp Code:
namespace ProjectName.Controls{  public class SpecializedControl : BaseControl  {   Â
public void SetupList()Â Â Â Â {Â Â Â Â Â Â dropdown.DataSource = "ABCDEFG".ToCharArray();Â Â Â Â Â Â
dropdown.DataBind();Â Â Â Â }Â Â }}
As far as I know, the only way to register a custom control (eg, not a .ascx control but a class inheriting a control) is to use this syntax on the page:
Code:
<%@ Register Assembly="ProjectName" Namespace="ProjectName.Controls" TagPrefix="custom" %>
This seems to work, I can place a SpecializedControl on the page with this:
Code:
<custom:SpecializedControl runat="server" ID="test" />
However, when I now call the 'SetupList' method on this control, from the Page_Load event, it seems that 'dropdown' (the DropDownList control in BaseControl.ascx) is null, it seems it is never instantiated.
To test what is happening I just created a simple TestControl.ascx (note: an ascx file again, so a WebUserControl and not a custom control), also with a dropdown and the same SetupList method.
When I register this control using the following syntax, everything works fine:
Code:
<%@ Register Src="~/Controls/TestControl.ascx" TagName="TestControl" TagPrefix="custom" %>
I can call SetupList and the list is populated just fine.
When I register the exact same control however with the other syntax, it does not work, and 'dropdown' is null:
Code:
<%@ Register Assembly="ProjectName" Namespace="ProjectName.Controls" TagPrefix="custom" %>
In this test case I can choose which syntax to use, but in my actual case I can't. The control I want to put on my page is not an ascx file, it's a class that inherits another control (a custom control), so as far as I know I am stuck with this second syntax. So, I cannot get this to work...
I also tried creating the control dynamically using LoadControl, but that gives the same problem.
Long story short: it seems like I have to use the first syntax to register a control (with a 'Src' tag pointing to the control ascx file), but I can't since there is no ascx file... How can I do this properly?
I have a very simple web form (in relationship to a larger project) that uses a USERCONTROL for the details [re-usable]. I believed this to be a simple process - boy was I wrong. Here is my code:
[code]....
CODEBEHIND: (podcategory.aspx.cs)
[Code]....
[Code]....
USERCONTROL Codebehind: (c_podcategory.ascx.cs)
[Code]....
WHY do i get the error CS0122: 'ASP.codes_membership_c_podcategory_ascx.CategoryName' is inaccessible due to its protection level
[code]....
I have 3 pages in each page there is a portion of page where it is common in all these three pages.Thought of making the common stuff as a separate control either User control/Custom control.Any suggestions on which one should i use custom/user control
View 2 RepliesI have a web user control that represents a simple message box. It is used to display simple messages like "Item has been deleted", or "The item was saved successfully".
On the other hand, I have another web user control that represents the item in the form of an editable form (I made this a user control because this is used in two different pages). I want to embed an instance of the message box user control inside the editable form. I am writing this right after the @Control directive:
[Code]....
Instead of using @Register directives, I register the user controls in web.config and so far this has worked just fine.
With the above markup, the project compiles, but whenever I try to navigate to a page that contains this construct, I get an HttpParseException exception. Furthermore, Visual Studio states that the tack w7rc9:MessageBox doesn't represent a known control.
What am I doing wrong?
What if, I'm not using the LOGIN CONTROL but rather creating a Custom Control for Login. Is it possible to have user roles and a site map that redirects to its own destination when the user login?
View 1 RepliesI want to create user control that can be added on other site.
here is the scenario.In my web site reservations can be done for restaurants. I want to provide user interface for reservation in restaurant owner's web site. When user goes to restauarants site he can reserve the slot through my site.
I have 2 web user controls, both inherit the same base class which extends UserControl. I want to raise an event on one and the other should be aware of it. both are on the same page however the 2nd control never handles the custom event i raised on the 1st one !
