Web Forms :: Display Multiple Choice Questions?

Oct 20, 2010

In my project I have a web service that returns an Exam object. This object contains a property that returns set of multiple choice questions in Questions[] array. Each Question object in Questions array contains two properties, Question and ChoiceArray. To clear things here's the code,

Exam e = service.GetExam(long CenterID);
Questions[] questions = e.Questions;
foreach(Qestion question in questions)
{
string q = question.Question;
Choice[] choice = question.Choice;
}

I need to know a way I can all of these question and their choices onto a form. Since I have these as arrays I can not bind them properly using DataList. how to display these questions and their choices on to the form and on choice selection, get the value of the selected answer for each question back.

Architecture :: Developing A Simple System Notification Mechanism

Nov 22, 2010

I'm looking for a simple way of developing "System Notification" in an ASP.NET website, which will consist of two parts: Part 1 - The administrator with go to a special page and enter 3 elements for the notification:

Notification Text (e.g. "System will be down for maintenance next Sunday 11/26/2010 from 1:00 AM to 1:30 AM Pacific Time) Starting date/time when the notification should be displayed (e.g. 11/23/2010 6:00 AM) Ending date/time when the notification should be displayed (e.g. 11/26/2010 1:30 AM) Part 2 - Once the user logs into the website within the above timeframe, the system notification message will appear on the home page. What would be a good architectural location for this?

- A table?
- An html page?
- Part of web.config file?
- A new notification.config file?
- Where else?

Visual Studio :: Simple Windows Program That Would Allow Users To Calculate Their Holiday Entitlement?

Feb 5, 2010

I am looking to create a simple windows program that would allow users to calculate their holiday entitlement based on a few simple rules (length of service, job grade, % full-time). Users would use drop-down lists to select their relevant fields, and the holiday entitlement would be calculated from the values given. For example, someone at job grade '1' with 2 years of service gets 25 days a year, whilst someone else on job grade '1' with 4 years service gets 28 days. Is this sort of program possible in Visual Studio 2008?

DataSource Controls :: Multiple Result Sets Vs Multiple Data Readers?

Jun 4, 2010

Would it be better to have a sp return multiple result sets and use NextResult() or have subsequent call to dr.execute.... () and hadle one result at a time?

To me using nextResult() on a multiresult datareader would be cleaner and easier - but it does not seem to be very "atomized". I guess I am wondering can the cost of executing multiple commands be neglected? Seems like executing multiple commands and receiving a single result set would also be easier to read/test/understand.

C# - Developing A File Storage Web Application?

Aug 5, 2010

I'm currently developing a web application whose primary user function is uploading and downloading of files. The files will be stored on the hard disk (no cloud storage yet).

Taking into consideration the possibilities of gigabytes of data and a large number of files, do I need to organize files into sub folders to account for the fetching of a file or is the file system's indexing already very efficient and I can ignore this potential bottle neck?

Update:

On a side note, I plan to store file names and any additional information in a SQL database and only query the disk when a user actually wants to download the file. This is how I plan on retrieving files:

FileStream stream = File.Open("C:file.txt");
byte[] fileContent = new byte[stream.Length];
stream.Read(fileContent, 0, fileContent.Length;

Any file information will be retrieved from the database. The hard disk will only be used for saving and fetching files.

Update 2:

Files will be saved as GUID + EXTENSION on the hard disk while the actual file name is stored in the database.

Mobiles :: Developing Application That Will Be Used Primarily On IPhones?

Jul 13, 2010

I am developing asp.net application that will be used primarily on iPhones. On one of the forms I have a textbox where users enter a date. I am using a javascript calendar on that same box so its easier for users to enter dates. But when a user clicks on this field in iPhone, the phone brings up its own menu (with keyboard) on top of my javascript calendar. That makes it look very ugly as a user now has to click on Done to close that keyboard and onyl then start using the calendar. Is there a way to prevent iPhone from displaying this keyword?

Developing A Web Application Which Will Deal With Online Examination?

Mar 8, 2011

I am developing a web application which will deal with online examination. The requirement is:

There can be n-number of sections in an exam and admin users should be able to create questions/answers and add to an exam. The questions should be displayed for a certain amount of time in the browser with meclock and it should move to next question automatically. User should not be allowed to open any other instance of the browser or login from another IP if the exam is in progress.

I am seeking community vote of how would someone design the application to meet all these criterias? What patterns should be used? What components to reduce the development time etc..My technology stack is C#, ASP.NET MVC or ASP.NET with SQL Server.
