I've got three different tables of which I need to take data from to use in a gridview.
I have no problem binding data from a single table to a gridview using EF, but how would I go about joining?
I'm thinking about using Linq to Entities to do it, just not sure of the syntax?
I'm putting some reports together and I need to populate these reports with data from my EF Model.
I'm currently attempting to do this with Microsoft Reporting, but alas so far unsuccessful. I've tried providing an enumerated list as a data source which it seemed to accept with no problems, but I get an:
error:
A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source 'Quote'.
When I view the page in that the report viewer control is on.
Also - while on the topic of reporting (probably not suitable for this thread) - I'm wondering how I'd go about creating a master/detail report, and how I'd provide an enumerable data type of single record for the master?
I have a dozen dropdowns and each one is bound to an SP. The page was taking much time to load as time times db is getting connected and sps are called.I thought of using a single sp returning multiple recordsets and iterate through each record set.
Ex:create procedure getdeptsemps

I am able to iterate through both the result sets using NextResultset but all I need to know is, how I can assign the recordset into multiple entities like Emp and Dept ?I will assign these Emp and Dept into corresponding dropdown lists.
(Using SQL Server 2008 and ASP.NET MVC2)I have a simple business table and a category table. I have a 3rd table to map business to category, a many-to-many relationship. the Map table contains a BusinessID and CategoryID. I'm lost as to how I can load the categories into my Business View Model using the entities model.Without incorporating categories, my code looks like this:

but if i want to populate the Categories with the mapped categories, how would one do that?
I have the following code for the SelectedIndexChanged event of a drop down list. This works fine as it is but this entity has a relationship to another entity (Genre). if i change the select statement to { m, m.Genre.MovieGenre }).ToList(); it doesnt work as contains anonomyous types.

What do i need to do in order to be able to query across multiple databases which are in the same db engine?
I have added the .edmx file of 1 database, but i only need 1 view from another db.
I have a model that consists of Order, OrderLine, Product.
I want to create an Order and add OrderLines (each OrderLine related to a Product). I create the Order and add new OrderLines to it. Between posts I store the Order entity in Session (or ViewState). Just so you know I have added suppport for binary serialisation which works fine.
The relationship is therefore Order > OrderLine(s) > Product(s).
You might have already guessed what the problem is - that when I SaveChanges() I get the usual 'AcceptChanges cannot continue because the object's key values conflict with another object in the ObjectStateManager.' error.
I have referred to a number of articles online but none seem to handle this case (where I have the relationship across more than two entities) e.g. [URL].
This must be a very common requirement surely? Is there anyone out there doing the same kind of thing with Entity Framework (and without using DTOs etc)?
My classes look something like this (I include only the relevant properties):

Now I What I want is to create a detached criteria that selects all orders for a given customer, and at the same time retrieves only the first 10 OrderLines for each order. The first part is easy:

But how do I instruct NHibernate to retrieve eagerly the first 10 orderlines for each order retrieved by the criteria above?
I've tried using a Filter based on the following example (taken from Nhibernate documentation):
session.CreateFilter( lazyCollection, "").SetFirstResult(0).SetMaxResults(10).List();
But when I give Order.OrderLines to the CreateFilter method, it retrieves all orderlines first, and then afterwards retrieves the 10 first orderlines, which is not what I want. I also tried combining this with a call to NHibernateUtil.Initialize to no avail.
How do I create a detached criteria for this problem? Or, if that is not entirely possible, how to I retrieve, for each order, the 10 first results only, without fetching the entire collection?
how can I display a linq query in a gridview that has data from multiple tables AND allow the user to edit some of the fields or delete the data from a single table?
I'd like to do this with either a linqdatasource or a linq query. I'm aware I can set the e.Result to the query on the selecting event. I've also been able to build a custom databound control for displaying the linq relations (parent.child).
However, I'm not sure how I can make this work with delete? I'm thinking I may need to handle the delete event with custom code.
I have a datamodel with a couple of tables. One of my tables have about 40 fields (I know that is a lot, but we have to keep the structure in place as we are upgrading a classic ASP project to MVC). Some of my Actions only updates 1 or 2 fields in my table.
Is there a way to create Entities, for instance, that only contains the contact details of the client table, and not any other details, and then another entity that contains only the address details. View 6 Repliesim building a simple message messenger web application, i currently have a column in my database dedicated to the status of a message. Its bound to the third column in a datagrid.
After converting the column to a TemplateField and using a Label to fetch the data how do i change the text from the database to a small message, e.g. if the data in the database (as an interger) is 0. how do i change the interger to a string to display "UnRead". Do i need to do this during the databinding call or after the grid has been databound?
I know it would be easier to use a boolean and checkbox control but the interger column represents more values than true or false.

I have a GridView that I'm using DataBinding to populate data. I'm binding to a List<Widget> in the Click event of a button. Once clicked, I set the .DataSource to the List<Widget> and call DataBind(). It correctly binds the data. I also use ASP.NET's built-in function to have delete buttons on all rows.
Here's my issue. When I get the List<Widget> it actually gets the data from a database. At times, I want to delete just one or two Widgets FROM THE VIEW and not actually delete it from the database. For example, the user fills out the form, clicks the button, and the system returns a List<Widget>. Well, there are two widgets in the list that the user doesn't want to ship with the order, so they click the "delete" button for the first row and then would click the "delete" button for the next row. So if I had 5 Widgets returned, and I want to delete 2 of them, the GridView would have 3 remaining Widgets. How can I delete the rows without rebinding? Because if I rebind, it will get all the Widgets again. With my BLL, I can't just select the 3 Widgets, it will always return the 5 widgets, and the user will "delete" the Widgets that are not supposed to ship with the order. I suppose I'm asking if this is possible to delete the rows without having to store the information to the Session object or other way to save state. Can I do something like GridView1.Rows[<Index>].Delete()?

I have a gridview in which I have two drop downs. One is populated with values that are static, so I have a regular sub that does that in the code behind. I tried to add code for databinding the other ddl to a datatable. I cannot get this to work. It just comes up empty. My asp code is fine, and the datatable definately has data in it - just nothing gets populated.
One other thing - the code for the static ddl has worked fine, but when I add this other block (either to the same sub as that, or dow the rowdatabound event) the static one doesn't work either.

Inside my repeater I'm calling an extension method like so:

he above is giving me an "Object not set to an instance of a object" exception inside the extension method. If I comment the above expression out, it works fine, and the items are binded wtih no problems.
