Entity Framework - Collection Of Complex Child Objects In MVC 3 Application?

Feb 20, 2011

I want to be able to update a model and all its collections of child objects in the same view. I have been referred to these examples: http://haacked.com/archive/2008/10/23/model-binding-to-a-list.aspx and http://blog.stevensanderson.com/2010/01/28/editing-a-variable-length-list-aspnet-mvc-2-style/ .

For example, I have an object Consultant, that has a collection of "WorkExperiences". All this is in an Entity Framework model. In the view, the simple properties of the Consultant object is no problem, but the collection I cannot get a textbox to show up for. I tried following the examples in the links above, but it doesn't work. The problem is, in those examples the model is just a list (not an object with a child list property). And also, the model again is an EF model. And for some reason that doesn't seem to work as in those examples.

[Code]....

This stuff with the EditorTemplate works fine in Phil Haack's sample project, which I downloaded to try, but here, with the EF model or whatever the problem is, I don't get any textbox at all. The table in the view is just there as a test, because in the table I do get the rows for WorkExperiences, whether I add an empty WorkExperience object or fill out its properties doesn't matter, the rows show up for each object. But again, no textbox...

C# - Best Way To Edit And Update Complex Viewmodel Objects Using Mvc2 And Entity Framework?

Apr 2, 2010

I have a table in my database with a one to many relationship to another table, which has a relationship to a third table:

[Code].....

This seems to work fine. My question to you good folks: Is there a correct way to do this? I tried following the making a custom model binder per the blog link I posted above but it didn't work (there was an issue with reflection, the code expected certain properties to exist) and I needed to get something going ASAP. PS - I tried to cleanup the code to hide specific information, so beware I may have hosed something up.

ADO.NET :: Entity Framework - Entity Stored Procedure Mapping - Can't Update

Feb 10, 2011

I am mapping a stored procedure to an entity by right clicking on the entity (in the .edmx) and selecting "Stored Procedure Mapping." This brings you to a Mapping Details - "Name of Entity" Window that allows you to select the insert, update, and delete stored procedures associated with the Entity. It also maps the stored procedure parameter to the Entity "Property" (Column).

I'm gettin an error "error 2042: Parameter Mapping specified is not valid." The cause of the error is fairly obvious, in the Insert stored procedure that has been selected, a 'CHAR' parameter is being mapped to an Int32 Entity Property. I altered the stored procedure parameter to match the entity, I deleted the stored procedure, readded, and reslected it as the Insert function. I also cleaned, validated, updated model from database. No matter what I do, the parameter list in the mapping details doesn't reflect the change to the stored procedure. It's stuck on a char --> int32 mapping, even though it has been changed, like it's buried deep in meta data some where.

Pattern For Retrieving Complex Object Graphs With Repository Pattern With Entity Framework

Oct 13, 2010

We have an ASP.NET MVC site that uses Entity Framework abstractions with Repository and UnitOfWork patterns. What I'm wondering is how others have implemented navigation of complex object graphs with these patterns. Let me give an example from one of our controllers:

[code]....

It's a registration process and pretty much everything hangs off the POCO class Person. In this case we're caching the person through the registration process. I've now started implementing the latter part of the registration process which requires access to data deeper in the object graph. Specifically DPA data which hangs off Legal inside Country.

The code above is just mapping out the model information into a simpler format for the ViewModel. My question is do you consider this fairly deep navigation of the graph good practice or would you abstract out the retrieval of the objects further down the graph into repositories?

Entity Framework - Mapping Doesn't Map For Stored Procedure?

Jan 4, 2010

I have a stored procedure that search a view using full text.

I'm trying to map the results to an existing Entity (Sales), where I mapped the column MivType to SaleType (as it makes more sense, and I want to keep db names away from my web site). The stored procedure is mapped to a Function Import, and I've defined its ReturnType to Sales.

This work well as long as the entity has the same property names as fields names.

Here's my problem: when I change the property's name, I get the following error after running the imported function:

The data reader is incompatible with the specified 'Model.Sale'. A member of the type, 'SaleType', does not have a corresponding column in the data reader with the same name.

I can fix this if I change the property 'SaleType' to 'MivType' on the entity, but why should I do that? Isn't that what the mapping is for?

This means I have to use the exact same names on the stored procedure and the entity, so in effect, the mapping is ignored (I have names like YzrName, MivYaad, etc, and I don't like it).

Is there a simple way around this? I don't want to use the db names on my application, and prefer not to change the stored procedure...

C# - Entity Framework 4 TPH Inheritance - Change One Type Into Another?

Nov 3, 2010

I have found some information regarding this but not enough for me to understand what the best practice for is for this scenario. I have your typicaly TPH setup with an abstract base class "Firm". I have several children "Small Firm", "Big Firm" etc inheriting from Firm. In reality I actually have different realistic classifications for firms but I am trying to keep it simple in this example. In the database as per TPH I have a single Firm table with a FirmTypeId column (int) that differentiates between all these types. Everything works great except I have a requirement to allow a user to change one type of firm into another. For example a user might have made a mistake when adding the firm, and would like to change it from Big Firm to Small Firm. Because entity framework does not allow exposing the discriminating database column to be exposed as a property, I don't believe there is a way to change one type into another via EF. The way I see it I have two options:

Don't use TPH. Simply have a Firm Entity and go back to using .Where(FirmTypeId == something) to differentiate between the types. Execute SQL directly using context.ExecuteStoreCommand to update the FirmTypeId column of the database.

I've seen a post where people suggest that One of the tenets of OOP is that instances cannot change their type. Although that makes perfect sense to me, I just don't seem to be able to connect the dots. If we were to follow this rule, then the only time to use any kind of inheritance (TPH/TPT) is when one is sure that one type would never be converted into another. So a Small Firm will never become a Big Firm. I see suggestions that composition should be used instead. Even though it doesn't make sense to me (meaning I don't see how a Firm has a Big Firm, to me a Big Firm is a Firm), I can see how composition can be modeled in EF if the data is in multiple tables. However in a situation where I have a single table in the database it seems it's TPH or what I've described in #1 and #2 above.

ADO.NET :: Custom Entity Framework Template And Access To The Database Type?

Sep 7, 2010

First and foremost ... I already made a few changes in the template, the most important one changing the methods generated for stored procedures with OUTPUT parameters and no resultset so that instead of instantiating a few OutputParameter objects, passing them to the method and extracting the values (all without any type checking) you just call the method with a few "out someType?" parameters so I do not need the very basics. I am totally confused by all those GlobalItem, EdmProperty,BuiltInTypeKind, TypeUsage and all this made of objects, all alike and all different though so as soon as I need more data than what's already used by the template I run into problems :-(What I would like is to change the WritePrimitiveTypeProperty() so that it outputs [StringLength(xxx)] for all char, varchar, nchar and nvarchar properties. But I can't find a way to get from an EdmProperty in the model to the database type in the store.anyone is interested here's the modified stored procedure mapping code for the template. The first code replaces the original in the .tt:

the second needs to be added into a copy of EF.Utility.CS.ttinclude that you add to your project and reference from the .tt
