I have a SQL Server 2008 DB with many tables filled with data and I used SQL Server Management Studio to generate a SQL dump by using the Script Wizard : Tasks -> Generate Scripts -> Script All objects in the selected database and also selecting the option to Script Data. I made sure to change the value of "Script for Server Version" to "SQL Server 2008". Then I created a new DB and ran the SQL dump on the new DB to generate an identical copy of the old DB. Then I assigned permissions to my default user to the new DB. Then I changed the connection string on my ASP.NET application to use the new DB. But when I run it, it throws the following exception -
Server Error in '/myapp' Application. The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe (available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the provider to a newer version. I was just wondering if anyone has ever had to port the schema across? Are there any experts that could pitch their opinions on the achievability of this (mad) idea? I'm using the IBM Migration Toolkit and as expected its throwing a bunch of translation errors some of which were relatively easy to solve (vendor specific function calls for example) and some will take quite a while to pin down and work round.... however this is not my main concern.
If completed I expect I am going to have to basically rework all the System.Web.Profile/Roles/Membership namespace classes etc to work round the SQL limitations of informix (i.e. IDS11.x SQL server doesnt have a DEFAULT (newguid()) so that would have to be put into the calling method) (and any MVP comments really as I can slap my boss round with the weight after he ludicrously agreed to this project for a client without doing any research...)

Creating a system with web front end and SQL backend (microsoft obviously). I have tried using the asp.netsqlprovider but i can;t as i am only allowed one database on the server, so i then tried to update my current database with the triggers to input the schema into the already existing database.Next step i create my own table with two simple fields of username and password and try and authenticate that way, i can't get that to work either.
I ahve limited permissions on the network as i am a University Student. I really don't know what to do. Never had to create a log on system before and i thought it would be far simpler than this. I ahve used Microsoft's sqlprovider schema before and it worked fine. I have also authenticated via IIS and AD too before. I can't do any of those two in this instance it seems.I need an alternative for logging in users, if needs be in can be crude. I also still need to have some kind of two different views too for logged in users and not logged in users, but that can change if needs must.Don't let me down people, haha. Think this posts in the correct place, i could not find another one i thought could be more relevant.

I am developing and app to find automatically characters stats with the 2nd edition dnd rules to be easy for my party to create characters when we play.
I am using Visual studio 2010 c sharp express and Sql 2008 express R2.I have added a database in the project to have all the data needed. When I use the release folder or the debug folder on other pcs the app doesn't run. Wherever I install SQL server (database and management) things are fine. I googled but I am not sure what to look exactly for and made a brief search here but with no results. I am trying to make sth that has almost no dependencies but well I can't avoid installing .net framework 4 everywhere...
Is there anyway to make database work without installing SQL? Is there any workaround like a dll or sth?

this is my 1st time uploading any database to Host Server. I have purchase DiscountASP's domain and MS SQL 2005 database addon. I can make my website to copy to DiscountASP's domain using the Visual Web Developers copy website wizard and it works great.
Now i have a database in my website which i wanna upload to DiscountASP's MS SQL 2005 database that i have bought, but i dont know how to upload it and then how to make the connection between my Website and the uploaded database. Is it that i have to copy the website(containing app_data folder containing database) to the host and it will work, or i need to copy the database separately and then make a connection in my website and then copy the website?

In my asp.net 2008 project, I am using the login controls... In the local sql server, there are all the necessary tables and stored procedures which the system creates for the relevant login controls. All working fine. I notice in the webconfig file there is an entry under connections, i.e.:
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source= ...
Now I would like to put the project into the Dev server. What do I do in terms
1- putting my web project into the Dev machine so that we can test it on the Dev server?
2- how do I put the login database schema into Dev? Is it just a matter of restoring my local DB into Dev?...

I'm currently learning from a ready-made tutorial here and I'm at this step [URL] Now my question is : How do I add the database to my project and don't use SQL Server Express? I created the MvcMusicStore database completely on a SQL Server instance, and modified the web.config included follow code
<connectionStrings>
<add name="MusicStoreEntities"
connectionString="Server=.192.168.161.1; Database=MvcMusicStore;Trusted_Connection=true"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
All other code is same with Tutorial,but the program don't work? I got an error "Entity Command Excution Exception" at this line: var genres = storeDB.Genres.ToList();

I'm using ASP.Net and NHibernate to build a website. Now, I need to add some sort of administration functionality, and came to think of an old django tutorial I once ran through. Here the admin page was build for me, and I could customize it as I liked. I see no reason that I couldn't accomplish the same, somehow, in ASP.Net, when I got my NHibernate schemas, thus reducing all the boilerplate admin-code I need to do. Are there any libs out there, that you think will fill my needs somehow?

I recently installed the latest Oracle Data Provider for .NET(ODP.NET 11.2.0.1.2), due to the fact that Microsoft Oracle Client is deprecated. Ever since the new installation, my SqlDataSource control stopped working. When I try to configure the data source of the SqlDataSource and test the connection, it always gives me the following error message:Database schema could not be retrieved for this connection. Please make sure the connection settings are correct and that the database is online.
OCIEnvCreate failed with return code -1 but error message text was not available. at DataObjectSupport(721,6)
I know for sure the connection settings are definitely correct and the database is online for sure, because any databinding I did manually works perfectly well. I can manually bind to a Gridview, ListBox controls and display the data without any problem. The only problem I have is using the SqlDataSource. This is painful because Gridview and Listview have a lot of cool built-in features. When you databind the controls in the code behind file, you lose all the features.
I have added ASPNET to the Oracle home directory and granted it full control access and retarted the computer but it doesn't work. I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and the database is Oracle 10g. Does anybody know why I'm having problem with SqlDataSource only?

I'm currently creating a small web app that requires users to log in before accessing any features.
I'm using Visual Web Developer 2010 and I have created a database in the App_Data folder of my project that I now wish to add the required tables, views and stored procedures to in order to use the SqlMembershipProvider. I have ran the aspnet_regsql file and entered the required details and completed all the required steps; however, when I return to Visual Web Developer and refresh the database I created, nothing happens, there are no tables or stored procedures.
Although nothing has been added to the database in my project, when I open up SQL Server Management Studio, my database appears with all the relevant tables, views etc.
Is there any reason why the database with all the required tables etc appears in SQL Server Management Studio but not in my project in Visual Web Developer?
I'm getting rather confused as I have completed this before on another project on a different machine and it worked fine.

I created a ASP.NET project under Visual Web Developer 2008. Under that project I had a Database (along with ASPNETDB.MDF) which has about 3/4 tables (I had SQL server 2008). Everything was working fine (like insert, delete, etc.). And I was able to view the tables in database explorer view.
Then I had to format my computer for some reason and I copied the whole project in a USB drive and then after formatting the computer I copied the folder and tried to open it in Visual Web Developer (now I have VWD 2010). I can see the both Database under App_Data folder (ASPNETDB.mdf and the DB I created). ASPNETDB has all the tables and data as expected. But I do not see the tables under the DB I created.

I'm trying to create a database within the app_data folder of an asp.net mvc project using the IDE, but i am getting a "Required Components Missing" message indicating "Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) requireSQL Express 2005 ....."
I am using
- Windows 7 Enterprise
- VS2008 Team System SP1
- SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition SP1
I have altered the database connection to use the default instance by setting to blank using
Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connection : SQL Server Instance Name
I also note from the SQL Server Books Online that the user instance feature will be removed in the future, but for now it suits my effort in developing an application where a number of people are working on the project.
Has anyone managed to create a database in the same manner?

I am looking for a fast way (either by script or Query statements) that would enable me uniquely extract some tables from my database schema.
The tables I wish to extract have some unique columns like x and y coordinate columns and i want to extract only the tables that have these coulmns in them.
My database schema is very large with 100s of tables that i cant just go through the tables one by one.

here's the situation:
You're using NHibernate with Fluent NHibernate for mappings.
You have an application in production with a database with live data You're adding a new feature in development and it requires a new database column.
The new column cannot be blank. For example, I recently had to a DateCreated column to a table and the app now uses that date. As the only time the data will be missing is now, it seems unnecessary to add code to check for errors.
In my application I have an updater which can execute a SchemaUpdate to add the new database column - however, the application will starting crashing as it is expecting a value in the new column.
I need to get some sensible default data into that column. In this case I manually ran an Update to set the date to the current date (good enough for the situation). In this particular case I believe that you cannot set the column default to getdate() using fluent mappings.
Keep a schema version number in a config file In the updater that runs SchemaUpdate start adding upgrade methods for each version. These methods would run updates to add default data (or other required actions).
After the schema update has been run, call all methods required for a version greater than the current version (i.e. those that haven't previously been run). So if the app is now version 4 and version 2 is installed, methods 3 and 4 would be run.

I'm working on a new project where I have the luxury of working from a Model to Database approach using Entity Framework 4.
The project I'm working on is taking an agile approach where different phases will be rolled out over time.
Will the Model First approach work in my case? I noticed when you "Generate Database from Model" it recreates the entire schema from scratch which will obviously wipe all the data that is in the db. I was hoping for a more "Update Database from Model" approach where the db would just be altered to reflect the changes rather than recreated

if there is any easier way to synchronize the TypedDataSets with the chages made to backend Table / Stored Procedure schema. I use Typed DataSets in my project extensively and I found them very useful and easier to code, but difficult to maintain
The difficuly I have always faced is whenever there is a change in a backend database table structure or stored procedure that is linked to any of the Typed DataSet in our project requires to recreate whole DataSet again by scrapping the old one. The backend changes will not be reflected unless and untill you recreate the whole stuff again.
Is there any easier way to synchronize those typed datasets with the changes made to backend database schema or any other workaround that will not required to recreate the whole DataSet again.

I am making a db schema for facebook like wall structure. I need to save wall posts, share a link, share a video
stuff into my database. Till now I am able to make this schema :
GO
CREATE TABLE [Wall]
(
[ID] [int] NOT NULL IDENTITY(1, 1) ,
[PostText] [nvarchar](MAX)
[PostedByUserID] [int] NULL ,
[PostedOnUserID] [int] NULL ,
[DateCreated] [datetime] NULL
)
GO
Next I have to add the schema for adding the "share a link" and "share a video" feature.
GO
CREATE TABLE [Wall]
(
[ID] [int] NOT NULL IDENTITY(1, 1) ,
[WallText] [nvarchar](MAX)
[PostedByUserID] [int] NULL ,
[PostedOnUserID] [int] NULL ,
[DateCreated] [datetime] NULL,
[SharedLink] [nvarchar](1024) NULL ,
[SharedLinkTitle] [nvarchar](512) NULL ,
[SharedLinkDesc] [nvarchar](512) NULL ,
[SharedLinkImageSrc] [nvarchar](512) NULL
)
GO
Now with this schema:
1st case: When the wall post is inserted the [SharedLink], [SharedLinkTitle],[SharedLinkDesc], [SharedLinkImageSrc] columns will be inserted as null and rest of the columns will have the values.
2nd case: When the "link shared" is inserted the "[WallText]" column will be inserted as null and rest of the columns will have the values.
For my case 70% of the time the wall post will be made and 30 % "links" will be shared which means 70 % of the cases [SharedLink], [SharedLinkTitle],[SharedLinkDesc], [SharedLinkImageSrc] will be inserted as null. Now my concern is that is it okay to keep the null columns inserted or I should go for a separate table for "shared a link" purpose and have the separated table like this:
GO
CREATE TABLE [LinkShared]
(
[ID] [int] NOT NULL IDENTITY(1, 1) ,
[PostedByUserID] [int] NULL ,
[PostedOnUserID] [int] NULL ,
[SharedLink] [nvarchar](1024) NULL ,
[SharedLinkTitle] [nvarchar](512) NULL ,
[SharedLinkDesc] [nvarchar](512) NULL ,
[SharedLinkImageSrc] [nvarchar](512) NULL
)
GO
I have to go in similar manner to add the schema for sharing the videos further. Please guide me in which direction should I move?
