AJAX :: Canceling An Asynch Postback With Lengthy Server Side Process

Jan 15, 2011

I'm having a bit of trouble cancelling an asynch postback. I have an update panel with an update progress which contains a cancel button so that the user can cancel the postback. When the user clicks a button to generate a report the update progress is shown. The report can take a bit of time as it has to loop through a thousand or so times creating an excel spreadsheet. If the user decides to cancel running the report for any reason then they can click the cancel button which I then call abortPostBack() in javascript which stops the update progress and the page is shown again. However, the user can't do anything else like navigate to another page as the server is still processing the loop. How would I stop the loop on the server processing when the user has clicked the cancel button?

AJAX :: How To Call A Server Side Method From Client Side

Jul 16, 2010

I am using VS2010 and .NET4 for a web app. I have a script manager/update panel that has a couple of grids.

The client just leaves the page opens and views an updated grid every 30 seconds or so.

I want to refresh the grid by calling the server side method to load the grid, but not load the whol page using meta refresh or similar (too much screen flicker and unnecessary bandwith).

Is it possible to set some timer using javascript or something and call a specific server method to refresh controls?

Tradeoffs With Client Vs Server Side Postback Handling

Aug 26, 2010

I have a ListView that contains a large collection of rows with textboxes that users can optionally fill out. These textboxes are not databound. When the user clicks "next" i need to iterate over the rows and determine which fields the user has filled out, and then update a sort of "cart" with the data and move to a confirmation page ("you have selected a, g, v, zz, is this correct?" sort of thing).

I can think of two ways to deal with this. The first is, server side, to walk the items in the listview, get the control ID's, save this data to a list, then save it to a database cart table for the next screen to read.I can use jquery to collect all the values client side, then pass it back to the form in a hidden field and use something like Newton.Json to get the data into a similar list.What are the tradoffs of these two approaches?

Web Forms :: RadioButtons Executing Server-side Code On Every Postback?

Jun 1, 2010

I have a user control with a dozen radion buttons in it.Every pair of radio buttons execute a Sub on server side.All of the radio buttons have the autopostback set to true.There is a public Sub of the usercontrol that gets called only once by the page and loads the data setting the radio buttons to checked or not checked.The problem is, that once a radio button is set, it will execute it's server side code on every postback even if the postback is caused by another control on the usercontrol or even another control on the page. So if all the radiobutton pairs are set and a postback is caused, there will be six server side Sub executing! Casting the sender in each of those Subs gives back the radiobutton that is checked at that point, so it's if on every postback the event is fired for each checked radiobutton.

AJAX :: ModalPopupExtender: After Postback, Client-side Show() No Longer Works

Mar 23, 2010

I'm using what I believe is a pretty common/boring/generic implementation of a ModalPopupExtender. I'm using client-side JS to show the dialog when the user clicks a link, and hide it if they click "cancel". I only do a postback if they truly want to save the data.

I can click the link to show the dialog, then click the cancel button to hide it, then click the link to show it... ad infinitum. If I decide to save the data via a postback, everything works well, and the dialog is hidden as a result of the postback, all as expected.

However, once the postback completes, my client-side JS show() never works again. Any attempts to click the link fail quietly; no error messages, the dialog just never shows again.

C# - Ajax Server Process With Live Interface Progress Status?

Oct 24, 2010

I have a process that retrieves html from a remote site and parses it. I pass several URL's into the method, so I would like to ajaxify the process and give a screen notification each time a URL completes parsing. For example, this is what I am trying to do:

List<string> urls = ...//load up with arbitary # of urls
foreach (var url in urls)
{
string html = GetContent(url);
//DO SOMETHING
//COMPLETED.. SEND NOTIFICATION TO SCREEN (HOW DO I DO THIS)
}
public static string GetContent(string url)
{
HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url);
request.Method = "GET"
using (var stream = request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream())
{
using (var reader = new StreamReader(stream, Encoding.UTF8))
{
return reader.ReadToEnd();
}
}
}

In each iteration in the loop, I want to show the URL was completed and moving on to the next one. How can I accomplish this?

AJAX :: Server And Client Side Timeouts - Server Timeout Not Triggering?

Nov 22, 2010

We have an UpdatePanel that is showing a gridview with loads of data in it. We have loads of well written sprocs that don't take very long, BUT we have a few horrible ones that take ages.

We do intend to rewrite them but in the interim we have put the ADO.NET commandtimeout up to 180s. The scriptManager.AsyncPostBackTimeout is set to 240s. We want to handle this on the serverside. One of the reports still fails (it's got a couple of nested cursors in it - someone who hasn't had SQL lesson 101 from me!).

Half the time, the nice error timeout message is shown using server side handling of the command timeout. The problem is that the other half of the time the commandtimeout doesn't seem to fire.

SQL Server :: Error "Transaction (Process ID) Was Deadlocked On Lock Resources With Another Process And Has Been Chosen"

Jul 23, 2010

I have a stored procedure which fetches data after joining 8-9 tables and inserts that into a temp table. It was running fine till now, but now when the amount of data fetched have exceeded 20000, the SP is breaking. I have debugged the sp and found that this main query is failing after returning arround 15000-16000 records.

The error message says Transaction (Process ID) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. I know what is deadlock, but when i checked with SP_LOCK stored proc i only found that my process is running on database only. So how is this getting deadlocked when there are no other processes running simultaneously on server.

Process Postback Events For Own Control?

Feb 19, 2010

I have my own Control1 which is dynamically added as child control to Control2 which implements INamingContainer in CreateChildControls() of control2.

Control1 itself implements IPostBackEventHandler. But RaisePostBackEvent() method is never called on Control1, despite I do call postback method from JavaScript.

And yes, there are other controls which implement IPostBackEventHandler interface on the page.

What could cause the issue?

UPDATE: Control1 is always created exactly the same way and assigned exactly the same ID in Control2

it looks like this in Control2:

protected override void CreateChildControls()
{
if(!this.DesignMode)
{
Control1 c = new Control1();
c.ID = "FIXED_ID";

AJAX :: How To Disable Tabcontainer Tab From Server Side

May 12, 2010

Working on a DNN website. Long time VB programmer new to ASP and Web Development.

I have a page with 2 modules on it one to select records and the other to show records details. there is also an add button on the select module for adding new records. the detail module has a tabcontainer with 5 tabs on it and if the user is adding a new record I want to disable the first tab. At all other times I want the user to have access to the first tab. The user clicks a button that uses OnModuleCommunication to start adding the new record. All my code is server side so when they click the button I clear all the fields and enable them all for editing but I have not been able to set the tabcontainers tab to enabled=False

[Code]....

and if it is in the correct location I do not want the button on the page to be seen like it is I want to call it from the server side so the user has no choice.

C# - Using Server Side Method From Javascript Without AJAX?

Mar 9, 2011

I have a tricky problem. I am in a situation where I need to use a method defined in a .cs file from a javascript function. The problem is we are using .NET 1.1 and AJAX cannot be used for the application.

Also, I will need to pass a string from the javascript to the server side method. The page where I am implementing the javascript is a .as

I have tried doing a post back and creating a RaisePostBack event handler method (both in the .aspx page and the .ascx user control) but no luck.

The javascript is called from a span's onclick event. The javascript function's input parameter would be a string which I will need to use to instantiate an Attachment.

I created a method which instantiates an Attachment using a string and calls the corresponding Delete() method for the Attachment object.

Now, I will need to pass the string from javascript function to the method I have created. I cannot use PageMethods.

The Javascript function is like:
