AJAX :: Stop 2 Asynchronous Web Service Calls?
Nov 22, 2010
We have a custom Ajax checkbox control. In that control we set value (from inside the control) via a web service call (say WSCall1) to the business engine. There is also an event exposed on the OnClick of checkbox for the end user to have their custom code where the end user have their own web service call (say WSCall2). This event that end users will write is handled inside the ajax checkbox control on the "OnSuccess" of the internal web service call (i.e WSCall1) with an expectation that if WSCall1 succeeds, WSCall2 will get executed. This works fine with Firefox and Chrome but not in IE. In IE sometimes WSCall2 gets executed first and then WSCall1 -- actually there is no gurantee which web service gets called first. For WSCall1 we have used " Sys.Net.WebServiceProxy.invoke"
Is there a way we can make sure that WSCall2 gets only executed on the "OnSuccess" of WSCall1? Isn't the OnSuceess supposed to be executed when the WSCall1 thread returns?

I am relatively new to asp.net. In My asp.net website, i have a method GetData(int id) which is called Repetitively, depending on id count, GetData is desinged to get data from sharepoint and sql server both. if the Id count is high say =10, my page load time increases because GetData is called 10 times and the page load time keeps adding up. so I want to ask, is there any way that this GetData() be called asynchornously or by the use of some thread, so that my page loads faster.

I have been moving my application to be more AJAX-based. Currently I have a web service call where I use jQuery to gather some textbox (string) and checkbox (boolean) results and pass it to a web service. Everything works really well, the response time is super quick. The only downside that I can see to this is
1) you need to use jQuery, which will add to the user's download time - this doesn't really affect my application too much because I am using jQuery throughout the site
2) users can see the code and potentially try to hack the web service because they know where it is
I am most concerned with #2. I've been reading a lot about .NET web service calls, using IAsyncResult,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2e08f6yc.aspx, and I am beginning to understand the 4 methods available in this article. However, is there extra bloat using this way compared to the jQuery web service call?If there isn't that much bloat or lag time using this method, I'd like to convert my application. Which one of these 4 methods is best in a scenario where I am just returning a small string value? The 4 methods in the article are to wait for EndInvoke itself, which from what I read is not recommended because this may block the first thread; and this should not be used on a service that affects the UI.Create a WaitHandle to wait for the 'OK' before EndInvoke is called Poll the IAsyncResult for .IsCompleted, using sleep() and a Do While until IAsyncResult.IsCompleted is true, then call EndInvoke Pass a delegate function to BeginInvoke to be called once the operation is complete.

I am currently developing a project management application using ASP.NET (VB). I am nearly done with it. But whenever users select an item from drop-down list control, a post back is triggered and screen is returned to the bagining. This is very irritating at times.
So, I want to know how can I make partial postbacks so that page is not refreshed again and appropriate binding of list control with my oracle database is also made.

I am successful in using the AutoCompleteExtender control by make use of web serivces as the data source (ServiceMethod) to the extender control. My question is do we have any way in assining a code behind method as data source to this control.
removing the ServicePath url and assiging code behind method to ServiceMethod attribute will resolve the issue.

I have a WCF service returning JSON to jQuery ajax calls and presenting the results on an ASPX page. When the page is NOT under SSL, the ajax calls work perfectly. When the page IS under SSL, the calls fail. I understand that this behavior must be due to the Same Origin Policy (SOP).
So, how do I setup my WCF service to accept calls from an SSL-secured page? Does the WCF service also need to be secured? If so, how do I do this?

i have the code for asynchronous call to the database. i execute the sql command into the begin method that will executed onto the separate thread. now i want to execute the another database call asynchronously so that this also execute onto the separate thread. code for one database cal is here....

con.Open();
cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT FirstName,LastName,Age,Company,Profile FROM Person",con);
return cmd.BeginExecuteReader(cb, state);
}

GridView1.DataSource = dr;
GridView1.DataBind();

I am building a page with databound list control. For each row I want to display piece of info retrieved from web service call. This could be time demanding so I want to render page first and retrieved additional info asynchronously and in parallel later on. Anyone has some tips how to make it? Just to have a more detailed picture it is a product list in e-shop which I want to render so customers can use it (go to product detail/add goods to shopping cart...) but meantime there will be a placeholder displaying info that informations are retrieving which after completion of call will be replaced by result data.

OK Here is the situation:
I have a web app with a table of statistics on our salesmen's customers, and each row has a sparkline graph showing the general trend of the sales data for the last 12 months. Each page shows a particular salesman's customer list, and some of them can have an enormous number of customers = an enormous number of rows = an enormous number of sparklines (e.g. one in particular has 125 and takes 15 seconds to load).
For this reason, jQuery sparklines could not be used - they completely pinned the CPU of a user accessing a page with a lot of sparklines with IE.
So I moved on to using the Google Chart API, which worked much better, except for two issues: 1) it's on a secure site, and the Google Chart API URL is only served over HTTP (solved by using a small wrapper script to download the graph dynamically and re-serve it from our secure server); and 2) on a page with 125 sparklines, it was still very slow due to the number of requests (even when the 0-9 server prefixes are used to maximize the # of available connections).
So my next step beyond this was to try to make each of the "download/grab/re-serve image" method calls asynchronous - and it worked!
...but only on my dev box running in debug mode.
When I pushed it up to the live site, it was faster, but it left some of the images unloaded, which is of course unacceptable.
So here is what I was hoping some SO hotshot would know:
1) Why are my asynchronous method calls working while debugging, but not working on the live site?
2) Is there any easier way to get a large number of sparklines of some sort to load quickly on a secure server without making me want to tear my hair out?
2a.) Does anyone have any experience using the ASP.NET Chart Library? Is this something I should investigate?
2b.) A co-worker suggested I make my own sparkline routine using a 1x1 CSS background image and varying the height. The problems are a) it is completely un-extensible in case we want to make changes; b) it seems hacky as hell (leaves about a bajillion DIVs per sparkline in the markup); and c) I have no idea if it will be fast enough when there are 100-200 of them on one page - what are your thoughts on the feasibility of the 1x1 sprite approach?

any modal popup controls whereas I can interact with the controls, causing callbacks and asynchronous calls without losing the popup.
I tried with the modalpopupextender, but the popup will disappear with the call and re-rendering the popup like many people will cause massive flashes of the popup which i want to try and avoid.

I have been trying to figure this our for far too long and I cannot get my head around it. Every example I have seen seems to be far more complex that I need.
I have a web service in my project (.asmx). I want to call it very simply from a button on a webpage.
Click
Run service asynchronously
return control back to webpage (web
service running in background)

In my asp.net application, I am using wcf service to get all the business logic. I am using that service reference in my application to work with that. Now adding that service reference is giving another option Update service reference is giving Generate asynchronous operations. If I check the option and add the service will it generate asynchronous methods for my existing service. If so how do I use the metohd.

I have a SOAP web service and I'm trying to figure how to save/log the last 10 requests for each user. Each user is required to send their user/pass in each request, so it's easy to know who the request originated from. With these last 10 requests saved, my goal is to develop some sort of page that will allow them to log-in with their credentials and view the raw request, the actual SOAP message, http header information, and anything relevant that I can think of.
The point is to allow people to troubleshoot their own connection issues instead of having to contact me each time they can't connect, have trouble formatting their request, etc....
My first thought was to store all this information in memory in a hashtable or something, but that may have scalability issues when we have hundreds/thousands of users hitting the web service.
We could use our database to store these requests. Instead of hitting the database each time, I may need to create some "buffer" mechanism that will only update the database after the buffer gets to a certain number of requests. Is there an existing library or mechanism that will do this?
We can't store these requests on the file system on the machine hosting the web service. Since these requests can potentially contain sensitive information, it's a business decision that I'll need to work around. Or maybe there's a better way to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Are web service calls synchronous or asynchronous by default? How is synchronicity determined, by the service or by the client?
I have code similar to the following:
try
{
string result = MakeWebServiceCall_1(); // this is a third party webservice
[code]....
In the above, SetStatus is writing to the same tables that the third party web services read from. If I change the status before both web service calls have completed, it's going to make a big mess and I'm going to get fired. How do I know/ensure that the webservice calls are synchronous?

I've got a web app running with purely web services like these:
Code:
<WebMethod()> _
<ScriptMethod(ResponseFormat:=ResponseFormat.Json, UseHttpGet:=False)> _
Public Function EditService(ByVal toddtype As String _
, ByVal fromddtype As String _
[Code] ....
And I want to log each web service call. I don't want to bother my database with this log - I would prefer to have the web app log to a text file on the web server itself.
How would I open and access a log file like this from a bunch of web services? Does web app still have application startup like events???

I'm trying to make API calls to a service provider. I've never tackled JSON requests before but I want to give it a go - as they seem less verbose than XML. Could someone be kind enough to give me a simple example here?
My confusion stems from some libraries I've come across. Do I need to add any libraries to my project? Or is it just a matter of creating a string that complies with JSON syntax and send it via a WebRequest?

We have a page that makes a request to a 3'rd party web service. When under heavy load this response time extends significantly, however the 3'rd party reports back that there times for processing remains constant. There timings show that from the time they receive a request to the time they send it back is always around 1.5-2.0 seconds. Now we are experiencing wait times of over 20 seconds. My understanding of ASP.NET is that each request will run on a IIS thread pool thread and make the request to the 3'rd party service return and process. So I don't really understand what could be blocking on our end. Is there something I am missing?? Is there a threshold limit beyond IIS that is blocking?
If I am missing something a physical book recommendation that covers this subject would also be a very welcome addition to any answer.

I need help calling a web service asynchronously. Current scenario is, I have a classic ASP page which does some processing and then redirects to a ASPX page which would call the wcf service asynchronously and then redirect to another classic ASP page. Im currently using the Asynchronous method to call the service with Async="true" included in the header. Testing the ASPX page induvidually it appears that the service call is asynchronous and does not wait for the the service to process data. But when integrating it with classic ASP page i.e ASP to ASPX to ASP it appears that the process takes a while as if the service call is synchronous.
So is there a better idea to use in calling a wcf service asynchronously. The idea behind my work flow is the ASPX page would be used to call the service and then the ASPX page would redirect back to the classic ASP page is came from. Let me know if there is a work around on how to call async wcf service in aspx page. I dont need the ASPX page to wait for a result or anything it is just used to call the WCF service async

I'm not a web service expert, so seeing if anyone else may know how to get this going. I don't need to track the web service - just need to launch it.

We have a WCF service (BasicHttpBinding) which will always fail after 30 seconds. Calls under 30 seconds complete without error. Anything over 30 seconds will fail with a 502 Bad Gateway exception:
System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (502) Bad Gateway.
But yet the WCF call continues to run in the background (and will eventually complete). We have confirmed that the BasicHttpBinding - Binding - sendTimeout (in web.config) is greater than 30 seconds (actually set to 5 minutes). We confirmed this both on the client and the server.
Here is the full stack trace:
System.ServiceModel.ProtocolException: The remote server returned an unexpected response: (502) Bad Gateway. ---> System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (502) Bad Gateway.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at System.ServiceModel.Channels.HttpChannelFactory.HttpRequestChannel.HttpChannelRequest.WaitForReply(TimeSpan timeout)
[Code]....
where this 30 second "timeout" is coming from or why a 502 Bad Gateway error is returned?
SOLUTION: We are using the IIS7 Application Request Routing Module which has Proxy settings of its own. The Proxy settings have a default timeout of 30 seconds. Increasing this to 600 seconds (10 minutes) solved our problem. The Bad Gateway error is not completely correct but WCF Trace Viewer (see answer) helped see that the problem was not the service itself but an issue in between the client and the wcf service.

I am using a third party service for location time(zonal).If I pass latitude and longitude of the location with service URL it returns the time of that location in XML format.But the problem is some of the time this service gets too much slow so because of that my home page gets stuck because its a synchronous call of that service.here my code-
string TimeZoneUrl = "http://ws.geonames.org/timezone?";
XmlDocument xmlDoc = new XmlDocument();
xmlDoc.Load(TimeZoneUrl + "lat=" + latitude + "&lng=" + longitude);
XmlElement root = xmlDoc.DocumentElement;
XmlNodeList nodes = root.SelectNodes("//*");
How can I make this a asynchronous call?
