Architecture :: Entities In Client Application Using WCF Web Services?
Jun 16, 2010
Can some one inform me whether I need to replicate the same set of entities in the client which are similar to that of the ones in the server? I have planned to start a proj with service functions as wcf services and in turn they are getting referred in silverlight client application.
Incase if i need to consider casting to or back from the return value lists of service methods in the server, should i be creating entity class in the client application as well? Or is there a work around? Something like exposing the entities from the server just as the services functions?

I have a datamodel with a couple of tables. One of my tables have about 40 fields (I know that is a lot, but we have to keep the structure in place as we are upgrading a classic ASP project to MVC). Some of my Actions only updates 1 or 2 fields in my table.
Is there a way to create Entities, for instance, that only contains the contact details of the client table, and not any other details, and then another entity that contains only the address details. I don't want to submit the entire row when I only update telephone details, or the client's picture.

I am planning to convert desktop application which has to deal with lots of client resources like printer, Id scanner(driver license,passport & business card etc.), webcam etc.Now accessing client resources like files, scanners and webcam everything has to be done through client side scripting which is really pain. Due to nature of this product, I have to create image on client PC and extract information from it. (This is also pain in Vista and Windows 7 due to security permissions and all that stuff).
My ideal design would be making managed dll which takes care of dealing with images, printers, webcam (I have to apply pan, tilt and zoom), id-scanners. This is kind of component. And GUI would be web based Asp.net which simply calls the functions of managed dll. If the end-user is opening application on new computer, then it will ask just like flash or silverlight that you have to install component locally for the first time.Points which I worry: 1. If it logically correct or sounds stupid? 2. How to install managed dll at end-user's PC (C:/program files) and use it from asp.net code behind page.
My application is intranet application.so avoid stupid assumptions about privacy and ohhooo you want to access files from my PC and all those stuff. (end-user would never mind in giving credit card to restaurnt waiter who could do anything with it behind counter but allowing web application to access file which is created by application is privacy issue)

I am working on an application where it stores information that different clients will be using. I need to figure out how to show the current client logged in only what they have posted to the application and not everything that has been posted to the application. Client 1 logs in and sees what they have posted; client 2 loggs in and sees what they have posted.....etc. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I am working on implementing a web application in ASP.Net by following the MVC design pattern (Not ASP.Net MVC). As part of the design, we have entity objects that has only properties as per the corresponding table structure and the idea is using these entity objects in the view layer and the same entity objects are passed to Persistence Layer for saving the data to the database. Business Objects in the business layer are responsible for interacting with the database.
As view creates the entity objects and passes to next layer, what would be the best practice to pass the entity objects to the business layer? Should the business objects accept data objects as parameters and interact with the persistence layer? Is there any other best practice to pass the required objects from the view layer to the next layer? As business objects also need to access the properties of the entity objects passed from the view layer, do we need any "translation" from entity objects to business objects?
the best practices to pass entity objects from view layer to the next layer and also how the entity objects created by the persistence layer can be used by business objects?

I have 2 web services. They are identical in every respect except that one points to a test schema and the other one to production. I'm in the middle of writing the class that will use these web services but I'm not sure how to do what i'm trying to do.What I need is a class that does the work of consuming the web serivce, and I want to pass to it either the test or prod serice and and it be transparent insde of the class.
So..testSerive and prodSerice are idential, how can i have them inherit from something so that i can pass that something to my consumer class?

there's an .aspx page that does absolutely nothing in the codebehind, but contains the markup for the page in the Design View. Then we have an .asmx web service that receives requests with JSON content-type. These are called by the JavaScript in the page. This web service returns .NET objects serialized to JSON in response to these JavaScript Ajax HTTP POSTs. I'd like to switch to MVC but am not sure to how switch this architecture. Basically what we're doing is two things:
1) Replying to GET /MyPage.aspx with HTML markup that represents the page
2) Replying to POST /MyPage.aspx/WebMethodName requests with .NET objects serialized to JSON.
It seems like MVC would be a good way to eliminate the need for a Page object (again, the codebehind isn't used--only the HTML markup in the .aspx file is) and an .asmx web service. No? What do I need to start changing to accomplish this switch? Is it straight-forward? Painful? Someone at work already has an MVC page running in the same directory as my Web Forms .aspx and .asmx web service, but I don't see anything in the directory about Routes, so I'm confused. He's got a Views, ViewModels, and Controllers subdirectories.

I'm planning to make an ASP.NET webserver that provides all kinds of functions, like an API. There will be quite alot functions that can easily be grouped (datasystem, userAccount, fileSystem, and so on). I can make multiple services (asmx files) into a single webserver, and let the clients connect to whatever service(s) they need. However, I'm not sure if it's a wise thing to do... Pack everything into 1 big service(1 asmx file), or split up into many smaller services? How about:
- performance/memory on the server (a client that connets with 1 or 6 services)
- Maximum connections (we will use a Windows XP Server edition computer)
There will be about ~30 computers using it. In a worst case scenario, they each computer could make use of 6 services at the same time, if I decide to split it up. A single client could make use of the fileSystem, account, dataSystem and several other things at the same time.

Apologies if this seems obvious, but after a week searching I can't find a clear answer to my problem.
I have developed an application in Visual Web Developer 2010 Express that uses the asp.net application services membership provider. It works well in development on my machine (data in the ASPNETDB.MDF database).
I packaged my application and deployed the relevant files with FTP to my shared hosting provider.
I took a copy of the ASPNETDB.MDF and restored it to the SQL Server 2008 on my shared hosting. I can connect to this through the Database Explorer in Visual Web Developer, but it doesn't contain any schema or data.
I know once I have the database in production I will have to make sure the connection string in web.config is poiting to it, but I don't know how to get the DB to production in the first place.

I have a fairly complex business application written in ASP.NET that is deployed on a hosted server. The site uses Forms Authentication, and there are about a dozen different roles defined. Employees and customers are both users of the application.
Now I have the requirement to develop a Windows Mobile client for the application that allows a very specialized set of tasks to be performed from a device, as opposed to a browser on a laptop. The client wants to increase productivity with this measure. Only employees will use this application.
I feel that it would make sense to re-use the security infrastructure that is already in place. The client does not need offline capability.
My thought is to deploy a set of web services to a folder of the existing site that only the new role "web service" has access to, and to use Forms Authentication (from a Windows Mobile 5/.Net 3.5 client).
I did see this question and I am aware of the limitations that Forms Authentication poses. Since security is not my primary motivator (I use SSL and can restrict access by IP address), but rather using existing user accounts and roles, my decision tree is somewhat different as well.

I have an application that exposes a number of ASP.NET web services at an internet location. For security reasons, I want to be able to authenticate clients, and reject any that are not authorised. The authorised clients in question will be ASP.NET web applications,
but I do not have guaranteed access to their IIS configuration, nor to their local certificate stores, therefore the solution must not involve any of these items.
However, authorised clients, will always make calls to the web services using wrapper methods provided by an assembly that I
do have control over. My idea is to digitally sign that assembly, and use that signature as the basis for authenticating the client.For that to work, the assembly will need to be able to construct an X509Certificate object from itself, and to attach it to the call to the web service:
X509Certificate cert = X509Certificate.CreateFromSignedFile(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location);
_webService.ClientCertificates.Add(cert);
Then the web service must be able to compare the incoming request certificate to its own signing certificate to authenticate the client:
X509Certificate requestCert = new X509Certificate(Context.Request.ClientCertificate.Certificate);
X509Certificate signingCert = X509Certificate.CreateFromSignedFile(Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location);[code]...
The documentation for the method doesn't help much, other than remarking that ASN.1 DER is the only certificate format supported by the method. if I am signing the assembly incorrectly, misunderstanding the method itself etc.? Or more generally if the approach I am taking will work or is flawed?

I am looking for a way to integrate a web application with a client application that will sit on the users desktop. Our scenario looks like this user will click a link in the client server application that will launch an .ASPX and pass various parameters via a querystring. User will make form inputs on ASPX page and on that input, I need to be able to execute a .EXE on the client machine that will refresh the window in the client server application.
I have looked at some tutorials for using ActiveX for this, but they all seem out of date and the ones that I have been able run prompt the user with the Activex warning dialog, which I would like to avoid.

I need to develop an application, which will get records (orders) from one application and process them. The updates to this records (order updates) will be sent back to the source application for end customer reference. I'm planning to achieve this data synchronization at the database level using triggers and stored procedures to insert database between the 2 databases.
But, the issue is I have to deploy this application in 3 different customer sites and I have to change the database names (cannot use the same database name) in each deployment manually. Because of this deployment issue, I was thinking of handling this within the asp.net application where I can store the db name in the database and then build the query within the application, but I dont want to do it as building queries like that doesnt look very professional.

We need the a solution for our ASP.NET website. in which a user needs to activate his machine and next time if he visits the site then we need to check the machine is activated or not. if the machine is activated then we want to redirect the user on different page.
Is there any way by which we can get the client machine MAC address and store it our database?
I have found some solution in which this can be done but it works on on IE and some ActiveX setting needs to be done.We want this should work on atleast IE and FireFox.
