Architecture :: Membership Provider In Multi Layer Application
Feb 3, 2011
assume I have a multi layer application with the following logical separation between layer:
Presentation Layer
Service Layer
business Layer
Data access layer
I'd like to use a custom asp.net membership provider for authentication/authorization in my app. which is the best layer where to put the custom asp.net membership provider?

So my asp.net is very very rusty, and i'm trying to get back into best practices and what not. So, I whip out google and start looking for examples and samples and tutorials, but what do I find? Old crusty stuff that tends to be written even before "the latest" technology was released back in the stone age.Sure, the concepts may still hold up. But the actual implementations are basically useless. I'm looking for something using Linq, n-layers (not tiers. Tiers can be a layer, but a layer is not necessarily a tier) some kind of current ORM (L2S, EF, etc..) and some real-world stuff, not abitrary and useless examples.

Our solutions requires validating users against a custom database. This also includes roles which dictates what he user can do in the system. What is the best way to implement implement security, is it to use Windows Identity Foundation or the default Membership Provider and Role Provider that comes with .net?

Apologies if this seems obvious, but after a week searching I can't find a clear answer to my problem.
I have developed an application in Visual Web Developer 2010 Express that uses the asp.net application services membership provider. It works well in development on my machine (data in the ASPNETDB.MDF database).
I packaged my application and deployed the relevant files with FTP to my shared hosting provider.
I took a copy of the ASPNETDB.MDF and restored it to the SQL Server 2008 on my shared hosting. I can connect to this through the Database Explorer in Visual Web Developer, but it doesn't contain any schema or data.
I know once I have the database in production I will have to make sure the connection string in web.config is poiting to it, but I don't know how to get the DB to production in the first place.

im trying to build my first multi-tenant application, i used a shared database and it is complete now, i want to build the app now, and i tried this approach: all urls in the app have the following form ~/user/page.aspx(user directory is logical) where user is the current user, which is saved in a session after he logs in. when the user requests a page, say ~/user/profile.aspx, he is routed to the real page ~/profile.aspx and then his data are retrieved from the database. i dont think this is how multi tenant applications work, but i couldnt think of another method.

For Example
I have 10 controls in presentation layer. I passing values to these controls. How the architecture works.

I am building a web site following the tutorials on asp.net. I am using dataset as data access lay, and writing classes to access the dataset. But the example is just basic ideas, how do I retrieve individual table column value in the business layer?For example, if I have a table called Product, I only want to find out what is the product name by product id. I did this in my ProductBLL:
public ProductBLL
{
public int GetProductName(string productId)
{
ProductDataSet.ProductDataTable prodData = Adapter.GetProductById(productId);
[code]...
Is there a better way, or am I doing this correctly? Can anybody give me a reference to a more complicated business logic model?

We are using ASP.Net Membership provider for user management module in our WPF based application. It seems to be working fine. But now we want to localize our WPF application, and don't know how to do that with respect to the data stored as part of Membership Provider. Is Localization supported by Membership Provider ?

I am trying to build my own custom Membership Provider in an MVC 3 Web Application using C#.
Here is my code:
[Code]....
As you can see, I am just starting with it, and yet I've encountered problems. According to
this tutorial when I right click on MembershipProvider, I should get the option to [ Implement Abstract Class ], but I don't get that ! I am using Visual Studio 2010.

I have a small windows forms application that uses the membership provider that is defined in my app.config file. I want to get rid of my app.config file and initialize the membership provider completely from code. The reason behind this is because I want to be able to dynamically connect to different databases containing asp.net user tables and I want the user to be able to enter the desired database information into a text box at run time. Is this possible or is it required that I have an app.config file?

I've been asked to upgrade a few applications and I'm planning on merging all of them into one asp.net application. I'm fine with this decision and have spoken with fellow workers and they also think it's the best option to go with.
The application will be accessed from a small group of users which belong to a larger domain. I'm currently planning on using Windows authentication and only allow this small set of users to access the asp.net application. Also there must be some role management, so that only certain users can view certain functionality.
I really don't want to have many different windows groups; so I want to avoid having to assign different windows groups to different folders and control permissions in the web.config.
What I'd like to do is:
- Assign one windows group to the small group of users who will access the page.
- Create a custom membership provider and control the user who accesses the application. Depending on the user I will then assign his current set of roles.
- Add an application setting to the web.config, with the name of the current administrator, so if he logs in, he will be assigned all roles, and will be able to create and assign roles to other users.

I have watched the how to video on Creating a Custom Membership provider. So far it works great. My login control interacts well with it etc. Now i've created a Custom Role Provider. I've created a class that inherits the RoleProvider base class and i've added code to each Sub. My question is, what is the best way to implement the role provider, considering I get the Roles etc from the database?

I am trying to build an application that
1. user can login by their AD account and password.
2. AD account can be assigned to different group.
I know there is a training video - [URL] to teach how to use the tool to provision the membership schema to SQL server for Forms authentication. but how can I use AD authentication with this?

<profile>
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="AspNetSqlProfileProvider" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider" connectionStringName="ApplicationServices" applicationName="/"/>
</providers>
<properties>
<add name="FirstName"/>
<add name="LastName"/>
</properties>
</profile>
I have the code snippet above in my webconfig file. I am attempting to set the FirstName property in codebehind on a register.aspx page. Like this:
Profile.FirstName = ((TextBox)RegisterUser.CreateUserStep.ContentTemplateContainer.FindControl("FirstName")).Text;
VS says Profile is in System.Web.Profile Namespace. I then use it like this "System.Web.Profile.FirstName", but says first name does not exist in System.Web.Profile.FirstName namespace.
How do I set the property and later retrieve it?

In my opinion, these architectures have some differences, such as:
1. 3-layer is a linear architecture, but MVC is a triangle architecture.
2. Presentation Layer of 3-layer includes View and Controller of MVC? And Model of MVC includes Business Layer and Data Access Layer of 3-layer
I think 2 differences above are not obvious or are incorrect!

I have been learning C# for the last year or so and trying to incorporate best practices along the way. Between StackOverflow and other web resources, I thought I was on the right track to properly separating my concerns, but now I am having some doubts and want to make sure I am going down the right path before I convert my entire website over to this new architecture.
The current website is old ASP VBscript and has a existing database that is pretty ugly (no foreign keys and such) so at least for the first version in .NET I do not want to use and have to learn any ORM tools at this time.
I have the following items that are in separate namespaces and setup so that the UI layer can only see the DTOs and Business layers, and the Data layer can only be seen from the Business layer. Here is a simple example:
[Code]....
Am I completely off base? Should I also have the same properties in my BLL and not pass back DTOs to my UI? what is wrong and what is right. Keep in mind I am not a expert yet.
I would like to implement interfaces to my architecture, but I am still learning how to do that.

I am implementing 3-tier architecture. I just wanted to know the role of business layer in 3-tier architecture.
I am developing application in using entity framework. So I have entity object which is accessiable in PL,BL & DL. My question is whether input assignment to entity object should be in PL OR BL.(Consider there is save method)
