Architecture :: Technology Guidance - Build Site With Client Side Hardware Interacting Controls

Sep 19, 2010

This is not a programming question per se, but rather an attempt to find the adequate technology to use for my objective. My mandate is to build an ASP.NET Web Application. However, on certain pages, some client-side information needs to be fetched by interacting with hardware on the client's computer, for example a barcode reader or an RFID tag reader. My first reflex was to think "ActiveX" controls with, perhaps, some AJAX coding to fetch the required values from said control. However, I am not sure if I am up to date with the latest tech trends. The solution I'm looking for will let me design a user control that plugs into my ASP.NET Web Application, lets me interact with client-side hardware, and can be automatically downloaded from the Web Application itself (I can't predict which computers will access my Web Application). Which technology(ies) should I go for?

Jquery - Programming With Js In Client Side With Ajax Technology?

Nov 12, 2010

I'm want to build web site in asp.net(because I know this language) in server side, and js (probably jquery) in client side, with Ajax technology. I heard that ASP.NET AJAX is too slow, if it's true (is it?) - what are the other options (to combine ASP.NET and Ajax) for me? Which tool combine all that technologies?

May 26, 2010

with build 30512 i was using client scripts including the .js this way:

<AjaxControlToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
<Scripts>
<asp:ScriptReference Name="AjaxControlToolkit.Common.Common.js" Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" />
<asp:ScriptReference Name="AjaxControlToolkit.Compat.Timer.Timer.js" Assembly="AjaxControlToolkit" />
<asp:ScriptReference Name="AjaxControlToolkit.Animation.Animations.js" Assembly=" AjaxControlToolkit" />
</Scripts>
</AjaxControlToolkit:ToolkitScriptManager>

now i receive this error (sorry, it is in italian) :

L'assembly 'AjaxControlToolkit, Version=3.5.40412.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=28f01b0e84b6d53e' non contiene una risorsa Web con nome 'AjaxControlToolkit.Common.Common.js'. I am currently using some $common functions, like getContentSize() and so on.

Looking at the source code it seems to me that all the paths have been changed, but i cannot understand the right namespace to use with the latest release.

Client Side Validation / When Build The Code, And Clicks On Image Button, These Validators Do Not Work?

Feb 23, 2011

I have a text box in which I want only digits (either decimal or whole numbers). I have applied Required Field Validator and Regular Expression Validator on it.I have an Image Button, by clicking on which, I want this validation to be performed. But when I build the code, and clicks on Image Button, these validators do not work and I am redirected to the server side method of Image Button and after completing the execution of server side method, control comes to these validators and client side validation executes.I am fed up by finding solutions on Google and unable to find any solution.Please tell me of anyone of you know the solution that why server side code is running first and client side validation is executing after server side code execution.

Architecture :: What Is Role Of Object Properties When Using Client Side Validations

Aug 24, 2010

I have been using properties and have idea that using properties with private fields we can implement validations and buisness rules in them.

But I am just thinking asp.net client side validation controls provide good strength and they provide good user experience as well. They can be used for any type of validation (using regular expression) on client side and their re-use is possible on server side. When validation controls are a must and they are powerful; is making properties not just wastage of time ?

Is there still some use of properties ?

Best Architecture/Technology Approach In C#

Dec 14, 2010

I was planning to utilize MVP, DDD, TDD, IOC, Dependency Injection, Repository , StructureMap etc but the timeframe is very tight and this can also be achieved in n -tiered architecture:

Technology:

Client Web Portal

ASP.Net /C#/SQL Server

Project Specification:

5 types of customers
Template of service
Dynamic Data Driven portal
Modules can be activated/deactivated through management console
Branding and customization
Rapid deployment portals of future clients as well
Portals willallow for customization
Data reporting services: reports and
BOBJ Ad hoc Query
Value- Add services to the clients
portal
Each Clients welcome page can be
customized by client as well
How can I determine which Client is
on "Welcome" page without them
logging in? Create different URLS for
each client base? how?
Mobile Application services
Localization
Demo portal should be built and sent
to client for testing rapidly

Database structure:

There will be core database which will be connected to 50-60 client databases depending on the login and other details.

What is the best approach in terms of data layer? since dynamic db connections will have to be implemented?

Javascript - User Control With Client + Server Side CustomValidation; Wrong Client Side Validator Is Picked

Nov 23, 2010

I have a user control which contains a CustomValidator which is used according to whether a RadioButton is checked or not (there are several RadioButtons, I'm only showing the relevant one)

<asp:RadioButton runat="Server" ID="RadioBetween" GroupName="DateGroup" CssClass="date_group_options_control_radio" />
[code]...

There is some client + server side validation code (the server side code does exactly the same thing and is skipped for brevity)

function ValidateDateFields_Client(source, args) [code]...

There are two instances of this control in the page. When running the client side version it hits the wrong one (the version of the control which is disabled). You can see from the generated HTML both are correctly specified. I'm not sure how .NET works out which clientside function to call given they both have the same name.

//
var ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator = document.all ? document.all["ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator"] : document.getElementById("ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator");

[code]...
Do i need to add something in to scope it? What's the best way to achieve this? If I disable the loading of the second control everything works fine.

JavaScript - Exposing Server-side State Through Client-side Controls

Feb 11, 2011

I have a list of items on an ASP.net page. That list is selectable in that whenever the user clicks on one, the page does a postback and the server code stores the index or some unique identifier of the picture in a ViewState property indicating that it is currently selected.

I would like to minimize the load on the server and therefore I would like to store the index or unique identifier representing the image in some way on the client side. The best way I can think to do this is to store said information in a hidden field ), however I had two questions about this before I go crazy:

Is this a security risk in any way, shape or form (i.e., exposing implementation details of the page)?
Is there a better/best way to do this that is more industry-standard? Does ASP.net provide a framework to do this that is cleaner than my idea? Seems like this would be a fairly common requirement to me...

C# - Interacting Controls Within A Grid?

Nov 27, 2010

I've been designing a website which has a grid on the page. The grid has multiple comboBoxes within it. These comboboxes interact. ie When one value is changed by the user another one has it's value change or is disabled/enabled etc.I find in order to do this I have to use FindControl a lot. Like in the selectedindexchanged event of one combobox I'll need to find another comboBox.This seems rather a messy way of doing things. It also seems like it leaves the system open to errors the compiler won't find say if a combobox has it's id changed later on down the line.

Jquery - Options For Page With Matching Client-side And Server-side Markup?

Oct 17, 2010

Suppose I'm building a StackOverflow clone using webforms ASP.NET and jQuery. The Question page has a question, several answers, and comments under each. Requirements:Users can post new answers and comments, and edit existing ones, without postbacks. No UpdatePanels; the AJAX calls retrieve just the JSON they need, not HTML fragments. The page loads with all existing answers and comments in place (no javascript needs to run to read the page).

What I'm trying to figure out is how to do this without having to maintain two sets of markup (one that's bound on the client using some form of jQuery templating, and one that's bound on the server using traditional WebForms).
