Architecture :: Trying To Create A Project Structure?

Jun 3, 2010

I am using asp.net 3.5 and I am trying to create a project structure (asp.net web solution with UI/Business/Data access) which would be like a base and ready for any new projects in my team and all could use this standard structure only as a base(outer boundary) and they can expand the structure. Also adding on to it I wanted to include certain features like adding libraries of reusable code/functions, so that every team member could use functions from my library within this base structure. To summarize the above, I need to create standard .net project structure/framework/architecture with resusable code library included in it. How can I do this..

Architecture :: Setup Project Structure For Web Application?

Feb 15, 2011

I am not new to ASP.Net application development but I haven't used some of the new frameworks or features that are used in applications these days.

For cross-cutting concerns, things like: Logging, Caching and DAAB are used in projects these days to implement proven and efficient source code from either Microsoft or other third party vendors such as Log4Net for logging purposes.

How To Structure A Utility/companion Project In A Multi-project Solution

Aug 4, 2010

Let's say I have a Visual Studio solution with a Web project, a BLL project, and a DAL project. I'm trying to follow the repository pattern keeping my SQL code in the DAL with an interface that is referenced by the BLL.

I have a handful of common solutions for things such as error handling, usage logging, and other things that can be considered utility functions (i.e. not in the business spec). I'm keeping these in a Common project.

Here are a few ideas I've had with regards to structuring the Common project...

Bundle SQL with logic in a given class

Create a layered solution within the Common project

Discard the Common project and put utility functions in with BLL/DAL

Is one of these ideas better/worse than the other? Does anyone have a better solution?

It's worth noting that these utility functions will be reused in a variety of other applications.

Architecture :: User Directory Structure?

Feb 7, 2010

I'm building a site that can possibly have millions of users (yes ambitious!). Each user can upload an image or two for his/her profile. How would you architect the directories to support this type of thing? I was thinking of having a users subfolder off the root dir where each user will have their own sub-dir that corresponds to their userId created at registration time. I could then upload their profile pics to their corresponding sub-directory under the users dir. Seems straightforward but am I missing anything? Can I have a million sub-dirs under the user dir? NTFS supports it so my guess is YES.

Architecture :: Webapplication Design / How To Large Structure

Jul 11, 2010

how a large ASP.NET webapplication can be structured / designed with "subwebs" !? In other words I want to structure a large web-application where I have a solution with more web-application projects. These projects are more or less independent "modules". One project should be a kind of frame application with shared masterpages, an shared sitemap and and a shared authentication. Later it should also be maybe possible also to integrate loosely older websites (which where written in classic ASP. ASP.NET 1.1, ASP.NET 2.0), but this not so important at the moment

How To Structure MVC 2 Project With Areas Sensibly

Aug 24, 2010

I want to structure my ASP.NET MVC 2 web application sensibly using Areas. The application consists of the two main parts Website which is the default part and Dashboard which administrates the site using a CMS. (Probably, more Areas will follow later on.)

How do I structure my project best? Should I ...

create the Area Dashboard and put the stuff belonging to the Website part into the main application folder or should I create both Areas Website and Dashboard?

Additionally, where should I place my Entity Data Model and the corresponding Repository classes that have to be accessed by both Areas?

Trying To Create A Proper Directory Structure For A New Website?

Jul 9, 2010

Can you point me to a url for the proper directory structure to create for a new website?I can create a website project and add class library projects to the solution to create a fully functional website. My grey area is that I need to zip up the web site solution and hand it over to the client.I'd like to make sure that I hand over a solution with the most proper directory structure.I'll run you through a scenario:

1. Select File > New > Web Site > ASP.NET Web Site from the main menu
2. Save with a path of C:ProjectsTestWebSite
3. Right-click the solution in VS and select Add > New Project > Class Library
4. The new class library is added with an automatic path of C:ProjectsTestWebSite (2)MyClassLib1

It seems like there should be a way to create a better structure for this but I'm just not following the correct process. Can you point me to a url with instructions for managing a proper structure for this?

Trying Create Unit Testing For An Existing Website Project (not Web Application Project)?

Mar 11, 2010

I'm trying create unit testing for an existing website project (not web application project). I cannot access my under test classes unless I use accessor. However, if I use accessor, I have problem to initiate an object with passing arguments. I only want to create unit tetsing for App_Code. After searching web, and I found that I'd better to create a web application project using my current existing website project. From solution explorer, add new project ->using existing website. My questions is: what impact will have for my current website to create the new project? Should I just convert my current website to web application? If do that, will it cuase problems on my website? I am new on asp.net, still learning..

Architecture :: Should Multiple Project Be Used For UI / BLL And DAL

Feb 12, 2010

I have been creating my BLL and DAL with in the same project as my UI. These have been logical tiers in their own folder with in the same project, that's with in the same solution. I want to try to create a solution that is more like a truly multi tiered app.

I've heard people talk about using a separate projects for their DAL and BLL. My understanding is that these would be separate dlls that would contain the appropriate code for each of the these tiers. I have a few questions regarding this.

Is this a good way to do this? It seems like a logical approach. It also seems like the next step in me moving towards an architecture that's truly tiered. Should I do this differently?

Should the projects for the BLL and the DAL use the same namespace? I think I read that some people use a namespace for each of these that indicates what they are, such as BLL and DAL.
