I have very simple validation on the aspx page (highlighting not valid textbox), and it works perfectly. But when I try to work with this page using MasterPage, I've got an error - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." (with reference to the line "aControl.BackColor=Drawing.Color.White" - underlined).
Here is the code of the content page.
<%@ Page Title="" Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" CodeFile="testValid.aspx.vb" Inherits="testValid" %>

In my ASP.Net web application, I have a base page that implements functionality that spans all pages of the web application and my web pages derive from this base page. Since there is a single master page for the entire website, I don't want to attach the master page in each of the web pages. So I attached the Master page via the basepage's OnPreInit method as follows:
protected override void OnPreInit(EventArgs e)
{
this.MasterPageFile = "~/Site.master";
base.OnPreInit(e);
}
However, when I switch to Designer view, I get the "Master Page Error"; The page has controls that require a Master Page reference, but noe is specified. Correct the problem in Code View.When I run the application, the webpage shows up correctly.What should be done so that the designer shows up correctly without having to go and set the master page explicitly in each of the web pages?
BTW, I am on Visual Studio 2010 and .Net 4.0

I looked through and through and found no clean solution for this. A colleague of mine did find a pretty dirty solution but I don't see why the solutions in the links reference below does not work when I place it in a master page. I have a master page that basically has a textbox and a linkbutton, when I hit the enter key, the default button for the child page gets called instead.

I have some problem with the AutoCompleteExtender when it's include in an UpdatePanel.
Scenario:
I have create a UserControl with TextBox, AutoCompleteExtender and a "Save" LinkButton and I put this Control in the InsertItemTemplate of a ListView.
The AutoComplete uses a Method that I have created in a webservice.
All works fine untill i place my ListView in an UpdatePanel.
The webmethod don't fired. The strange thing is that if i put the same Control also out of my ListView it seems to work, but i can't catch the linkbutton click.

I use AutoCompleteExtender control in an application. When user types an account name to pull a report, the auto complete control lists the top 40 account names from database, user is able to select an account name or type exact account name to pull a report.
It works fine on regular browsers. But the auto complete function does not work on blackberry browser. No error message either. If user types an exact account name, a report can still be pulled. But if a user does not know an exact account name, no data will return because that wrongly typed account name does not exist.
Does somebody know how I can make auto complete work on blackberry or does somebody know any alternative method?

I have a master page containing a tree and 3 dropdown lists. I am populating a context menu on right click of each node, and when clicked on any item of the context menu, it navigates to required pages.
My problem is after navigating to the required page, the selected values from the drop down lists and the selected node from the tree are getting cleared.
I can set the selected values for the dropdown lists by making some properties in master page.
But how do i maintain the selected node?
In my content page, i have got the valuepath of the right clicked node.
Or is there any other way than setting the properties in master page?

My Project is a normal web site, not a Web Project, and I am using VS 2005.
I am trying to define common Master Page Type in app_code which has an area to display error messages and the like. Very simple.
I added the following in app_code:
[Code]....
Also, I added the following in Master Page Source Declaration:
[Code]....
Also, I added the controls tblrowErrMsg and lblErrMsg as server controls to the Master Page.
Why I am doing this ?
This will allow me to display error messages from nearly any where inside the code in code-behined, app_code, and other core Class Projects (DLL).

I have a master page setup that is used throughout my site that is basically a header with a menu. I recently added a textbox and a button to this master page which is to be a quick search box that is available anywhere in the site. When a user enters text into the search box and hits the button, I need to load the actual content page which is used to search and show search results (which also uses this same master page), and have the text entered available so the search can be triggered automatically. Again, this search text box and button is now in my master page so it could be triggered from anywhere in the app... it serves as a convenient way to do a basic search from anywhere in my app, without having to first navigate to the actual 'search page' that already exists. You can also navigate to the actual search page, which uses the same master page, where there is many more search options.I'm thrown off by the master page arrangement, which I have not used until this project. What do I do?

I have a nested master page that has its own master page. The parent master page has a property defined in its code behind.
Public ReadOnly Property SelectedPage() As String
Get
Return _selectedPage
End Get
End Property
How can I reference the parent master page's property from within either the child master page's code behind Page_Load or aspx template page?

This is my VERY FIRST experience with AJAX, so be as non-elitist and as clear as possible -- mayve even to the point of talking to me like I'm a child.
GIS programmer add an autocomplete search box to her mapping application. Before I can do that, I need to understand how to do it in a simple place first. I'm working with Visual Studio 2008 on my desktop machine and my website files are on a Windows 2003 Server running IIS 6 to which I have a mapped share called X:. Yesterday, I downloaded the AJAX Control Toolkit and added it to Visual Studio. It shows up in my toolbox and I can add and remove items. Cool. I can start an "ASP.NET Web Application" from Visual C# -> Web and I can drop many controls on the page with design view, but the extenders do not drop there. Particularly, I am interested in the AutoCompleteExtender. If I double-click, nothing happens. If I drag it over the design view, I see a slashed circle. If I add it in the source view, it gets highlighted and I'm told "Element 'AutoCompleteExtender' is not a known element. This can occur if there is a compilation error in the Web site, or the web.config file is missing." The web.config is actually not missing.
I have been told by a friend that I may need to add something to my Web.config to enable AJAX stuff, but he offered nothing else on that. I see a system.webServer section in my Web.config and a comment above it that tells me it is not required for IIS versions earlier than 7.
Also, if I drop a TextBox on my page and try to choose an extender, the AutoCompleteExtender is listed in the Extender Wizard; however, adding it this way ends up with the same result.

I'm trying to dynamically change the look of my main master page depending on what nested master page that the current content page is using .
So for example.
Main master page = main.master
My nested page = nested.master (uses main.master)
content page = content.aspx (uses nested.master)
So in the Page_Load event of main.master I want to add a switch statement that will check to see what nested master page is currently being used by content.aspx, or whatever content page is loaded.
So far I have got
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string nMaster = //This is the line of code that I am looking for.
switch(master)
{
case "nested.master":
//all my logic here.
break;
}
}

I have a 3 level nested master pages and a content page. parent1 is the top parent, parent2 is parent of parent3 and parent3 is the parent of the content page.
I get an error 'Cannot find ContentPlaceHolder xxx...' where xxx is a ContentPlaceholder. It resides in parent2 and content page is trying to fill it.
Can content pages only use their direct parent ContentPlaceHolders or can they also use any of the higher master pages?

I have created an autoextender & cannot seem to get it to work within my pages. So I'm missing something probably small yet important.
The webservice AutoComplete.asmx, when called by itself, does return data correctly.
The codebehind for AutoComplete.asmx is located in the App_Code folder.
AutoComplete.asmx and the page from which I am calling it are both located in the root folder.
AutoComplete.vb:
