CSS Versus Master Page

Jul 31, 2010

my application uses a master page from which every other page inherits and also an external style sheet.

the problem i have is that once a messagebox pops up while running the application(maybe due to an error that was caught) the "content" part of the page loses the styles that were applied to them from the external style sheet. Only the Master page part of the page still retains the external styles.

assistance, will be very welcome.

Incase this might be useful too: i use the Response.Write method to call the javascript "alert" function to display pop ups.

Application_Start Versus OnInit Versus Constructor?

Jul 23, 2010

I've gone rounds with this ever since I started programming classic ASP 12 (or so) years ago and I've never found a great solution because the architecture of ASP and ASP.NET has always been a swamp of bad practices, magic shared singletons, etc. My biggest issue is with the HttpApplication object with its non-event events (Application_Start, Application_End, etc.).

If you want to do stuff once for the entire lifespan of an HTTP application, Application_Start is the obvious place to do it. Right? Not exactly. Firstly, this is not an event per se, it's a magic naming convention that, when followed, causes the method to be called once per AppDomain created by IIS.

Besides magic naming conventions being a horrible practice, I've started to think it might be a reason there exist no such thing as a Start event on the HttpApplication object. So I've experimented with events that do exist, such as Init. Well, this isn't really an event either, it's an overridable method, which is the next best thing.

It seems that the Init() method is called for every instantiation of an HttpApplication object, which happens a lot more than once per AppDomain. This means that I might as just put my startup logic inside the HttpApplication object's constructor.

Now my question is, why shouldn't I put my startup logic in the constructor? Why does even Init() exist and do I need to care about Application_Start? If I do, can anyone explain why there is no proper event or overridable method for this pseudo-event in the HttpApplication object?

And can anyone explain to me why in a typical ASP.NET application, 8 instances of my HttpApplication are created (which causes the constructor and Init to run just as many times, of course; this can be mitigated with locking and a shared static boolean called initialized) when my application only has a single AppDomain?

State Management :: Master Page's Treeview Selected Node / Setting The Properties In Master Page?

Aug 2, 2010

I have a master page containing a tree and 3 dropdown lists. I am populating a context menu on right click of each node, and when clicked on any item of the context menu, it navigates to required pages.

My problem is after navigating to the required page, the selected values from the drop down lists and the selected node from the tree are getting cleared.

I can set the selected values for the dropdown lists by making some properties in master page.
But how do i maintain the selected node?

In my content page, i have got the valuepath of the right clicked node.

Or is there any other way than setting the properties in master page?

Web Forms :: Define Reusable Master Page Type To Reuse Parts Of The Master Page?

Jan 5, 2011

My Project is a normal web site, not a Web Project, and I am using VS 2005.

I am trying to define common Master Page Type in app_code which has an area to display error messages and the like. Very simple.

I added the following in app_code:

[Code]....

Also, I added the following in Master Page Source Declaration:

[Code]....

Also, I added the controls tblrowErrMsg and lblErrMsg as server controls to the Master Page.

Why I am doing this ?

This will allow me to display error messages from nearly any where inside the code in code-behined, app_code, and other core Class Projects (DLL).

Web Forms :: Master Pages - How To Access Content Page From Master Page

Sep 5, 2010

I have a master page setup that is used throughout my site that is basically a header with a menu. I recently added a textbox and a button to this master page which is to be a quick search box that is available anywhere in the site. When a user enters text into the search box and hits the button, I need to load the actual content page which is used to search and show search results (which also uses this same master page), and have the text entered available so the search can be triggered automatically. Again, this search text box and button is now in my master page so it could be triggered from anywhere in the app... it serves as a convenient way to do a basic search from anywhere in my app, without having to first navigate to the actual 'search page' that already exists. You can also navigate to the actual search page, which uses the same master page, where there is many more search options.I'm thrown off by the master page arrangement, which I have not used until this project. What do I do?

C# - PrincipalPermission Versus Web.config For Page Access Controls

Jul 13, 2010

I currently have my access permissions in web.config:

[code]....

This is a very weird one... I just added ASP.NET4 routing, which changes the URLs. So, all of a sudden my web.config permissions are no longer valid! Similar to point #2 above.

I was thinking it would be better to just use PrincipalPermission as security attributes for the classes/c# files involved in each aspx. My question:

More importantly... My PrincipalPermission attribute generates an exception (good) but does not redirect users back to the logon page (bad).

Web Forms :: Get Nested Master Page From Main Master Page

May 30, 2010

I'm trying to dynamically change the look of my main master page depending on what nested master page that the current content page is using .

So for example.

Main master page = main.master
My nested page = nested.master (uses main.master)
content page = content.aspx (uses nested.master)

So in the Page_Load event of main.master I want to add a switch statement that will check to see what nested master page is currently being used by content.aspx, or whatever content page is loaded.

So far I have got

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string nMaster = //This is the line of code that I am looking for.
switch(master)
{
case "nested.master":
//all my logic here.
break;
}
}

Can content pages only use their direct parent ContentPlaceHolders or can they also use any of the higher master pages?

AJAX :: UpdatePanel Versus Wizard WebControl / Page.Response

Mar 30, 2010

I have a normal Wizard WebControl. On the first page of the Wizard, in the StartNavigationTemplate, I've added a button. When clicked, the button will generate a PDF (using iTextSharp) and post it back through Response.OutputStream. All this works just fine.

Now I want to wrap my Wizard in an AJAX UpdatePanel, to make it switch through the steps smoothly. However, this means that the Response from my PDF button is intercepted and does not do a post back. My solution to this was to add a PostBackTrigger for the PDF button, but since the button is in a template I ended up adding it dynamically. Here is how my final code looks like:

[Code]....

[Code]....

- if I load the page and the first thing I do is to click on the PDF button, then the PDF file is returned as a normal post back

- if I load the page, navigate to step 2, return to step 1 and then click on the PDF file, then the Response is intercepted by the UpdatePanel and not displayed.

Oct 10, 2010

I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC (1.0). I have a problem to resolve. I have developed a web applicaton (an application of articles like e-commerce) with a head (logo and menu). I have defined the head (logo and menu) in the Master page (site.master). Now, I must display the number of articles in the head in a field (like the number of articles in the virtual basket in the e-commerce). I can read the number of articles in the data base (in the controller), but i can't integrate it in the master page.

Web Forms :: Master Page (site.Master) File That Now Contains Nothing But Hex Code, Mainly 0's And 1'...

Feb 3, 2011

My computer system froze on me, the mouse froze, cntrl-alt-del, did nothing, so I reset it. Did a disk check, and now everything seems fine except for my master Page html code which I was in the middle of editing when it happened. The VB code-behind file is still ok, the designer file still shows ok with all of the controls in it, but I can't get into desgn or source view. It just opens and gives a whole page of hesixecimal code such as as:

00000030 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00000040 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

It just gives me a whole page full of numbers like this. I haven't backed up for a few weeks and so I hope I can get this back.

Can Other Project Areas Use One Master Page Or Does Each Have To Have Their Own Master Page

Feb 12, 2010

For those who setup muli project areas in ASP.NET MVC 2 in VS 2010, I have a few questions for you:

Can other project areas use one master page? Or does each have to have their own master page?
What about the web.config file? Does each area need the config file? Or does it rely on the master?
I tried removing the master page reference, but I get an intellisense error and failed to monitor changes after following this: [URL]

I assume I need to leave in the master page so that at least works.
