Can Windows Service Application Share A Bin Folder With A Web Application
Jan 5, 2011
I have some common dlls that are referenced by both a windows service application and a asp.net web application. I don't want to make separate copies of the dlls and I also don't want to put those dlls into GAC. I try to put that service application under the same root folder as the web application so that they can share the same bin folder. I am not quite sure if this will cause any problems? I did find the web application had random session timeout, but not very often. Not sure if it was caused by the shared dlls.

In this asp.net web application, users can upload files to the server through a web interface. All the uploaded files are save in a server side folder. If I want to create a new win form desktop client (actually, its a WPF application) which can be used to upload files to that same server side folder as web interface does, how can I share that server side folder with that win form client?

I would like to create a web application that gives an overview of all latests builds of a Team Foundation Server (TFS). The original idea was to simply query the TFS for all these builds and display the results using html. Now the problem is that this is just too slow. It takes around a minute to get the required informtion. I can't inluence this, it is just given. So I came up with the idea of caching. I could cache all results for a certain period of time and then invalidate the cache but as soon as the cache expires someone that uses the application will have to wait again which is not that nice.
The Team Foundation Server is able to notify whenever a new build is available. So basically the idea is that the application could react on that notification. In order to be notified I have to write a web service and register it with the TFS. That worked pretty well so far. The web service is now notified whenever a new build is done. Now I would like to connect my web application to the web service and whenever the web service is notified by the TFS update the cache of the web application. Here starts the problem. How can this be achieved? First I thought that the web service could fire a .NET event and the web application could react on that event but that does not seem to be possible. The next idea was that both the web service and the web application could use the same cache. The web service could then directly update the cache with the build information it receives from the Team Foundation Server but I am not even sure if this works.
Can a web service and a web application share the same cache? The web service doing something like Cache.Add("key", buildInfo) and the web application buildInfo = Cache["key"]. If not what other approach could be used to solve such a scenario?

I wanna embed the windows service in the web application. I have seen few posts in the web. where they generate separate exe for the windows service and use it as an installable.
The same process i tried doing it but it threw an OS error in my server which is windows 2000 and didnt supported the executable.
However the website of mine runs fine in the same server. Thus i was thinking if i cd embed the same code in the web application.
Also, in my case the website of mine takes job for simulation. These jobs are taken for simulation execution and nearly takes 12hrs for completion and if they are not completed within twelve hours then they are supplied extra twelve hours to complete the simulation jobs.
The simulation executables are a series of executable and bat files.
The results of the simulation gets updated in the tables of MySql and hence are displayed to the user.

I have a visual studion 2010 solution with two projects
1 . A class libarary
[Code]....
2. A windows service application
[Code]....
The service application is used to convert .dbf files to xml. The convertion is done using the classlibary project wich is called by the windows service application. This class library project has some values hard coded. like the path to look for the .dbf file
const string sourcePath = @"F:forms";
const string pathToDbfStructure = @"F:formsstructure.dbf";
const string pathToBackupFile = @"F:ackup";
I want to make these hard coded values changable. like moving them to an app.config file. To which project I have to add the app.config file (classlibary or windows service)? How can I use the value from configuration file in classlibrary ?

I am writing a web service for a customer. I tested it locally fine using a consumer, but he is having an issue calling it from his jquery, so he asked for logging.I figured I would use the Windows Event Log for this purpose. after I added the event log and was testing it locally via the consumer, I had an error saying The source was not found, but some or all event logs could not be searched. Inaccessible logs: Security. So what I did to solve that was restart Visual Studio with administrator privelege so the event logs could be searched. And I am writing to my event log locally with no other issues.
My question is, when my customer intalls this new version of my web service, will it be able/unable to search the logs and if unable, how can it be given admin privelege so it is able, or again is that a bad idea?

I have an existing windows .net application that has an access database as the backend.
I want to place the access database on a web server and it was suggested that I create a web service in order to communicate with the database.
I've been looking at some tutorials but am still confused about the basic config needed. Here's some questions I have:
1) Does the web service need to be created inside my current project by right clicking on the solution and choosing to add a new web site...and then selecting web service?
2) If it's set up like this, what files do I place onto the web server?
3) Where does the database reside? Do I need to place the database inside the web server that I create?
4) My current project has existing sql that gets data and I'm uncertain how to re-write in order to retreive the data. e.g. which part goes into the client and which part goes to web service pages? here's an example of a procedure that currently exists...I'm getting data to populate a dropdown:

I'm experiencing a to me mysterious error when sending e-mails through a SMTP-server from an ASP.NET web application. I get the famous error "unable to relay for xxx@yyy.zzz". What's mysterious to me is that when I cut and paste the exact same code that sends the e-mail into an usual .NET Windows Forms application, send the e-mail with this application, it all works just fine. This made me think that perhaps the problem is that the ASP.NET application runs as NETWORK SERVICE while the Windows Forms application runs on a domain user account, but it turns out that I have another ASP.NET application sending e-mail through the same SMTP-server running under NETWORK SERVER at the same IIS, and this application does not experience this problem.
I've further tried to send e-mails through the SMTP-server manually by telnet the smtp-server on port 25 and running the SMTP-protocol manually, and it all works fine. The SMTP-server is not configured with any kind of authentication or SSL.
Another mysterious fact is that the ASP.NET application can send e-mails from an adress within the same domain to an e-mail adress within the same domain, but not to any adress outside of the domain. But the Windows Forms application, that uses the exact same code, can send e-mails from any adress to any adress both within AND outside of the domain.
So to summarize:
The ASP.NET application can send
e-mails from addresses within the
domain to adresses within the domain,
but not to addresses outside of the
domain.
A Windows Forms application running
the same code on the same computer
can send e-mails from ANY address to
ANY address.
Another ASP.NET application on the
same IIS running under the same
account (NETWORK SERVICE) can send
e-mails using the same SMTP-server
from ANY adress to ANY adress.
There is no authentication configured
on the SMTP-Server.
Both the ASP.NET application and the
Windows Forms application utilizes
the System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient class
to send a
System.Net.Mail.MailMessage.
The code that sends the e-mail massage is:
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
MailMessage mesasge = new MailMessage(txtFrom.Text, txtTo.Text, "Test mail", txtBody.Text);
SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient();
if (!(string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtUserName.Text))) //Is false since txtUserName.Text is empty
client.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text);
client.EnableSsl = false;
client.Host = txtServer.Text;
client.Port = 25;
try
{
client.Send(mesasge);
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
txtResponse.Text = ex.Message;
}
}
As far as I can understand, this should be a matter of configuration rather than coding issues.

I have a simple windows form app that I need to get the file path for. I am placing a config file in the same directory and I need to be able to get the path to that file.
I have used
Application.CommonAppDataPath
but that returns the path with 1.0.0.0 at the end.
and
Applicaiton.StartupPath
but that returns the path with indebug at the end
Is there anyway to get the path to just the main file directory without anything appended to the end?

why is it that the exact same codes that i use to create a Windows application, which is able to work, does not work on a Web application? i created a windows application using c# and socket programming language. i will be connected to a remote server and through the windows application, and i will be able to send the "byte[] msg" to the server and activate the LED lightbulbs attached to the remote server. that exact same codes works well on the Windows application. however, when i create another Web application using the same exact codes, i does not have any error yet i am not able to activate the LED lightbulbs attached to it. is it that through the web or internet explorer i am not able to send the "byte[] msg" correctly? or that i sld modify "byte[] msg" to suit the web usage? or any other reasons?
