can anyone tell me on how this encryption done? i know the standard way of encrypting using aspnetregiis.exe which replaces the entire connnectionString section of the web.config.

My problem is I need to run this in IIS. What is stopping me? It's a permission problem, but what permission. I am running IIS 7.5 on Windows 7. This is happening on my production server as well. Same error.
I have a custom section in a web application that I am having trouble encrypting. I have written an external .NET program that will encrypt both .NET 1.1 & .NET 2.0 web/app configs.Up until this point in time, I have never had to encrypt any custom sections for either type of application. Anyway, the way I set it up for my web application is I wrote a class library that I import into the web application which allows me to set up and read from the custom section in the web.config. That all works fine... I added the custom section, and the web pages are able to read the values fine.
If I encrypt something in my config file using aspnet_regiis.exe -pef "appsettings" "path" which i think will use my logged in id's credentials. If i deploy this application on some other machine where some other user id is used to login. Will there be any issues or .......?
I have been reading up on encrypting the connectionStrings section of the web.config file and I have noticed that all of the methods embed the cypher key in either the registry or the machine.config file. My site is currently being hosted for me by a hosting company and as such I do not have direct access to the registry (or aspnet_regiis for that matter). I was wondering what options are available to me if I cannot use the usual aspnet_regiis method or am I misreading the posts?
I just deployed my database to my remote server. I am trying to create a connectionstring to the remote server and it won't work. I am using godaddy. I kept having this message: could not establish a connection to the database. Here is the connectionstring for the local server:

I'm creating a multi-tenant Asp.Net MVC 3 Web app, and using EF4.1 code first for the db model.For development I'm happy to use SqlServerCE in App_Data, and for production this will move to Sql Server 2008.
Say my context is called "MyModels", by default code-first looks for a connection string called "MyModels" in Web.config. This can be told to use a file in App_Data or changed to access a database in SQL2008. All fine so far.
But because of multi-tenancy, I'd like the SqlServerCE filename to match the unique id of the tenant (so App_Data would have "client_x.sdf", "client_y.sdf"; Sql Server 2008 would have separate databases). I can't work out how to direct to these different databases.
I've tried MyModels inheriting from DbContext and supplying a connection string (using a 'placeholder' conn string in Web.config and replacing "{clientId}" with the unique id), and I've also tried setting the connection string in the MyModels constructor:
base.Database.Connection.ConnectionString = xxx;
but this never seems to work. I always get the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. ( it's not yet 'configured' to use SqlServerCE, and so is trying to connect to Sql Server)
Tracing the code, Database.Connection.ConnectionString hasn't been read from Web.config at this point, so I can't search and replace that, and, possibly, it's getting overwritten by the 'placeholder' conn string later in the pipeline.I reckon this must be quite straightforward and I just can't find the 'hook'.

found while searching for help on my asp.net application.I have a small application with connected to a SQL database. As it was so small, and contained very little data of any importance, i had set it up with Clear passwords.Now i have been asked to expand the database considerably, and encrypted passwords are now required. I can easily modify the web.config so all future users are set up with encrypted passwords. But is there any way to change all existing users passwords to be stored encrypted?
I'm using ASP.NET membership for a site that will serve primarily sophisticated users. I understand the difference between hashed and encrypted passwords, and I'm trying to decide between the two.After my last client complained bitterly about hashed passwords being a total PITA, I've started to favor encrypted passwords. But someone suggested this just isn't secure enough.So my question is: What, exactly are the risks of encrypting passwords? Any person with the ability to steal passwords by decrypting them from the database would surely have the ability to reset them if they were hashed, no? I'm having trouble seeing where someone could cause trouble with encrypted passwords but couldn't with hashed ones. Making it convenient for users is also important.
I have been trying to encrypt password and found a code which is working with Access fine but as i have changed to SQL it is not decoding the encrypted text.. it amazes me..this SQl code is not letting me log on..

My issue here is that even after I compiled my application (using "aspnet_compiler -v /reports c: eports"), the information inside the web.config file of the Account folder still not encrypted, and I want to publish my site to the customer server. So, since this server is a customer server, then they can access this "web.config" file and change our web-application security behaviour (correct me if I am wrong). Basically, I don't want the customer to even have access to our secured pages when they access our web-application using the web browser. How to solve this issue?
I just came across some code that seems to encrypt database keys prior to sending them to the client (WebBrowser, Silverlight, etc).
To illustrate, suppose you have a list of students to extra-curricular activities, and a relationship defined between them. Every time the data is written out to the ASPX page, the studentID and activityID is encrypted. Every time a write, or modify is made, this value is sent back to the server, decrypted, and saved to the database.
What could be the reasons to expose data this way? Is this a normal practice?
