Couldn't Load File Or Assembly One Of Its Dependencies
Mar 15, 2010
I changed some names of namespaces, assemblies in one of existing project (C# and ASP.NET). But when I try to debug it; I get this error. Could not load file or assembly 'HR' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040). I have replaced DFI with HR in the code.

The full error is: Could not load file or assembly 'App_Web_xxxxxxxx, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Where xxxxxxxx is the ASP.Net generated temp name. We are getting this error for a WCF service hosted within an ASP.Net application. The weird thing is that it happens very occasionally, independent of deployment changes... and when it does happen the service "breaks" for all subsequent requests. At the moment, the workaround for us at the moment is to delete the temporary assemblies from the application's folder in: %windir%Microsoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files The app is hosted in IIS7 on a win 2008 server, using .Net 3.5

When these occur, the sites will YSOD untill we recycle the application pool. The sites may run for days/weeks before this occurs, or it might happen twice within the hour. I have not been able to pinpoint this to any specific request/function in our system. In this case it points to itextsharp, but it randomly points to any assembly referenced by our application, both internal and external. Running caspol verifies that the DLL has full trust permissions:

Our application is running on three servers, two of them are on Server 2008 Web x64 while the third is running Server 2008 R2 Web x64, all have .NET 3.5 installed, no .NET 4.0 installations. The problem only occurs on the first two that are running 2008 non R2. Running depends.exe on all three servers gives equal results for the nonR2 servers:
My DLL is shown as x86 (compiled as AnyCPU, running in x64 w3wp), all other modules show as x64. Missing IESHIMS.DLL and LINKINFO.DLL - both of these seem to be red herrings according to Google. The third server shows the same, except it does not miss LINKINFO.DLL All servers are running IIS7 (7.5 for the R2 one) under a custom domain account that has been granted the necessary permissions:
aspnet_regiis -ga [user]
Load user profile is set to false on all three servers. I've tried setting this to true on one of the faulting servers, according to: [URL] By running processmonitor I can see that it's now using the C:UsersTEMPAppDataLocalTemp directory for various temp files - the other ones are not using any such directory. So far I'll let it run in this way to see if this changes anything. I'm in doubt however given that the third server is not exhibiting the problems, yet still has "Load user profile" set to the same value, false. I've also tried running Fuslogvw on all three servers, logging binding failures to disk. All three servers report the same binding errors for VJSharpCodeProvider and CppCodeProvider, but these seem to be normal as well and can be solved by not defining the DEBUG and TRACE constants during build. We're running about 500 websites on each server (identical, load balanced), of which 50 are under moderate load, the problem has arisen both under heavy load as well as under minimal load however.
Right now I'm waiting for the errors to happen again so I can hopefully see a pattern and determine whether "Load user profile" alleviates the issue. I don't understand how the lack of "Load user profile" would cause an issue like this? And even further, how it would seemingly work on R2 but not on plain 2008?

I've been tearing my hair out over this one, and hopefully it'll be something simple that I'm too thick to work out for myself. We've got a ASP.NET website (IIS7.5, Server 2008R2) that uses the wonderful DevExpress ASP modules. All was working fine until I had the bright idea of upgrading the modules from 10.1.4 to 10.1.7. Ever since, the site throws intermittent but regular errors that it:
Could not load file or assembly 'DevExpress.Data.v10.1, Version=10.1.4.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b88d1754d700e49a' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040)
All the .aspx files have similar register tags, e.g.:
<%@ Register assembly="DevExpress.Web.ASPxEditors.v10.1" namespace="DevExpress.Web.ASPxEditors" tagprefix="dx" %>
I updated the VS2010 project using DevExpress's own upgrader utility. There is no reference to v10.1.4 anywhere in the code - I've checked the .aspx files, web.config etc - and the web server has all the latest .DLL's on too. I've even moved the site to a complete new, virgin server, yet the error still occurs. Specifying the subversion number and public key in the register tag doesn't make any different. I've iisreset'd, cleared out temporary files, rebooted etc, all to no avail. The really frustrating thing is the error isn't reproducible - sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

Things of note:
A simple IIS Reset fixes the issue. We had the same code running on a single webserver with no problems. We then moved the site to two new, load balanced (using sticky sessions) webservers (all three Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition SP1). Now each of the load balanced webservers throw this exception about once a week just out of the blue. The only major difference I can think of, is I've installed the 4.0 .NET framework on the load balanced servers. The website is still running under ASP.NET 2.0 so I don't see how this would be an issue I've configured the indexing service to not search the "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder, but it didn't help. We use the Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data dll everywhere on our site. Almost every single page uses our logic dll which in turn utilizes the EnterpriseLibrary dlls. While the errors where happening once, I even looked to see what processes were locking the dll in the "Temporary ASP.NET Files" folder, and it wasn't any different than the locks on the server that was working fine. Once the error starts, it errors every single time until an iisreset is performed.

I've tried deploying my asp.net app to a new server and I get this error:
Could not load file or assembly
'System.Web.Entity, Version=3.5.0.0,
Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
Sure enough, System.Web.Entity isn't found in C:WindowsAssembly. However, the server has MS .NET Framework 3.5 installed and also MS ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions 1.0. Is this something I need to deploy with my app, or something I need to be installed on the server? It's not my own server so xcopy deployment within my app folder would be much better if that's possible.

I've been working on a project that's been a rather seat-of-the-pants experience. We have MOSS 2007 and Silverlight 3 installed. We're trying to make use of some new 3rd party software, Visual Fusion([URL] While working through the tutorial I ran into a bit of an issue. I've been using a particular version of a PDF library (PdfSharp), with the dll file in the bin directory (bin/PdfSharp.dll). I use this to prepare, combine, split, and otherwise manipulate PDF files, both those that come from outside my app and those I generate using ReportViewer.
Today I saw there was a new version of the library and naively dropped the new .dll into the bin folder, replacing the old one (I rarely have need to mess with the 2 or 3 dlls in my bin folder and it's been 2 years since I set them up so I wasn't really sure how to proceed and didn't take the time to think too much about it). The PDF generation no longer worked, so I deleted the newer .dll and replaced it with the older one (I have copies in backups, the production server, etc).
Now, although I've confirmed that the dll in the bin folder is the older version (file Properties show correct older version number, file size is older file size, etc), and although the application works correctly, including those parts that call on the library, I can no longer access the data sources for my RDLC files -- when I open an RDLC file in the editor and choose Report->Data Sources, I get this error:
Could not load file or assembly 'PdfSharp, Version=1.2.1269.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f94615aa0424f9eb' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I am mystified: I don't understand the connection between a report's data source and this library; I know that the correct version (1.2.1269.0) is in binPdfSharp.dll; and I can find no references to any version of PdfSharp in any file in my application, other than the code that actually calls it (ie, there are no references to it in web.config or the .rdlc files or the dataset .xsd files). I've also been through the registry and find no references to the new version. I've tried deleting the dll and re-adding it using "Add Reference...", and I've tried "Update Reference", all to no avail.

I've add MSChart to a webpage and I'm also using a Survey page I got from 4GuysFromRolla (http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/061604-1.aspx). Both work on my development machine but when I move them to my hosting site there are issues.
With MSChart page the chart is not displayed although it's included the Page Source code:
src="/ClubInformationTracking/ChartImg.axd?i=chart_3d90c53b0f844807a2491a1d79a636a1_0.png&g=75fecf0f14cf4121b623691d383263aa" alt="" style="height:300px;width:700px;border-width:0px;" />
And when I try to open the Survey page I get this:Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'sstchur.web.survey' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
Source Error:
<%@ Register TagPrefix = "sstchur" Namespace = "sstchur.web.survey" Assembly = "sstchur.web.survey" %>
<%@ Page Language = "C#" %>
Assembly Load Trace: The following information can be helpful to determine why the assembly 'sstchur.web.survey' could not be loaded.
WRN: Assembly binding logging is turned OFF.To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1.
Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging. To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog].
The Hosting site is using Version 4.0 and the dll needed for the survey is in the BIN directory.
When I moved my files to the hosting site I had to change every instance when I referred to a file from:
"~/FileName"
To
"FileName"
I've tried all of the "fixes" I could find for the MSChart that involved changes to the web.config file but because of the error messages associated with the Survey page I'm guessing this is the issue.
