DataGridView Paging With Server-sided Paging?

Nov 15, 2010

I am passing the PageNumber and PageSize to a stored procedure, which returns only that page of data. It also returns a record count what the total number of records would be if I returned all of them at once.Generally, how do i hook this up to the DataGridView to enable paging?It seems like the expectation is for the resultset to contain the complete dataset. Many of the properties that I expect to be able to set, like RecordCount, appear to be read only.

Paging With Datagridview Works Only From 2nd Time

Aug 5, 2010

I have datagridview with paging enabled. But when I want to move from page to another page in the grid, then it only works when I press the 2nd time on some other page. I read some on the internet that I need to bind the data of the gridview but the thing is, I cant bind the data again because the gridview was filled with data in the page_load from querystring and I dont really want to go over the querystring again in the PageIndexChanging function.

protected void searchGridFA_PageIndexChanging(object sender, GridViewPageEventArgs e)
{
searchGridFA.PageIndex = e.NewPageIndex;
}

So why does the page changes only from the 2nd time I press it?

.net - Use A DataPager With Server Side Paging?

Jul 8, 2010

I'm trying to use a DataPager to do Server Side paging. Here is my code

<asp:DataPager ID="pgrFooBars" PagedControlID="lvFooBars"
QueryStringField="page" runat="server" >
<Fields>[code]....

The problem is that the DataPager appears to be using the Count property of the ListView to determine the total number of records, which in this case is 20. Somehow, it needs to know that there are 1,500, not 20 total records. The DataPager has a property TotalRowCount, but this is read-only.I have never seen a DataPager example with Server Side paging, but assumed that it could do Server Side Paging, otherwise what good is the QueryStringField attribute?

I am aware that you can do a custom paging solution using methodology like the 4GuysFromRolla did here http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/031506-1.aspx, but I'd first like to know if a solution with the DataPager is possible before creating a custom solution.

UPDATE,The more I look at this, the more that I'm coming to the conclusion that this is not possible and that, unfortunately, the datapager is a control meant for small web sites only. What I want to do should really be quite simple if the control were built correctly. I want to be able to say

dpFooBars.TotalRowCountComputed = false;
dpFooBars.TotalRowCount = AnyNumberThatISoChoose;

I've been looking for some hack to accomplish the same thing, but it appears that the datapager's TotalRowCount is computed from the actual number of items in the datasource that it's bound to. It seems very odd to me that Microsoft would create a ListViewPagedDataSource() class and a DataPager at the same time and not have them work correctly together, but this appears to have been what has happened.

UPDATE 2 (AHA MOMENT?It seems that it has been possible to do server side paging since .Net 2.0 by using an ObjectDataSource and customizing the SelectCountMethod(). I believe it should be possible to customize ObjectDataSource to suit my needs. Hmmm. I'm going away for the weekend, so it'll be a couple of days for me to see if this works. Stay tuned, true believers.

Use Update Panel To Run Some Server Sided Code

May 19, 2012

I am trying to use an update panel to run some server sided code. everything works fine with this:

asp Code:
<script runat="server">
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Label1.Text = "Refreshed at " & _
DateTime.Now.ToString()

[Code] ....

The problem is this: when the page first loads, i have a text box that i add a string to. if its a normal string, its fine. but, if its an XML string, the update panel will stop working (no errors, it just wont refresh the panel when the button is pushed). i'v tried narrowing the cause down and found it does not like "<" character.

I tried using this: Server.HtmlEncode to encode the xml but there must be other characters in the string it does not like (the XML is a response from the Linkedin API) .

how i can remedie this? even if the Server.HtmlEncode worked, its not the ideal solution, as i want to display the XML not the decoded string.

Use A Gridview With Sorting And Paging To Display Data From An SQL Server?

Apr 14, 2010

I want to use a gridview with sorting and paging to display data from an SQL server, the query uses 3 joins and the full text search containstable. The from part of the query uses all 3 tables in the join.What is the best way to do this? I can think of a stored procedure, SQL directly in the SQLDataSource and creating a view in the database.I want good performance and would like to leverage the automatic sorting and paging features of the gridview as much as possible.

Edit:About size, I suspect very few records, total about 1000 and a query would typical result in no more than 100 records and most times much less.

SQL Server :: Handle "paging" In A Web App?

Jul 13, 2010

What's a good way to handle "paging" in a web app? I want the user to see only rows 1-20 from a data query, but they can then choose to view rows 21-40, then 41-60, etc.

More detail:

I'm building an app that will return a bunch of news articles from a database.

I will be converting the query results into XML and transferring it via web service. I will then convert the xml into an HTML table to show in the browser.

The query will return hundreds, but I assume it must be more efficient use of bandwidth and server resources to show only 20 at a time.

Css For Gridview Paging?

May 16, 2010

My question is, can I control the style of the paging element separately of top and bottom, I have set the paging to appear in both top and bottom of the gridview, and I want to see that the top pagination is little high up in the page, to do that I used the cssClass and set margin-top:20px and made the position: absolute, this does change the position of the top paging area and set it rightly for me, but the bottom pagination has also come up as a result and now sits inside the grid data!!

Custom Server Controls :: Paging And Sorting Gridview Custom Control Inside Of A Wizard Control?

Dec 24, 2010

here's a situation and I would appreciate your response.

I have programmatically created the Wizard control:

Page_Load(obj s, evargs e)
{
Wizard ClaimDetailWizard = new Wizard();
foreach(int item in selectedItems)
{
//create new step
//added custom control to new step
//add step to wizard
}
//added wizard to a placeholder on a page
}

Based on List I get from Session i added new steps to my wizard To each step I had added a custom control

Each custom control in tern contains another custom Gridview Control in it.

So here's the problem when the page loads for example for two steps. All is good Wizard does what it's supposed to do.

But when I try to use sorting or paging in that custom Gridview. Somehow it displays the gridview I should see in the next step of the wizard.

Also what I'm noticing through debugging. Is that when I press next in the wizard I go back to the original page where I do all of the code specified above, and it recreates the wizzard. But it goes to the next step. Is this the way wizard supposed to work? Just doesn't seem very efficient.

How GridView Paging Gets It's Data

Jul 13, 2010

I hoping someone could answer a question for me. I am relatively new to developing web applications with .NET and I have question I can't seem to find a straight answer to. When allowing paging of a GridView control, how does retrieve the data per-page? Is all the data stored into an object, and then displayed x amount of rows at a time? Or, when moving from page to page, is it executing each time but restraining the result to the specified amount of rows?

C# - Paging And Sorting Grid In MVC

Jul 27, 2010

I'm trying to implement a paging and sorting list in ASP.NET MVC without using MVContrib grid or javascript (needs to be seo friendly). I have constructed my action with the following signature: ActionResult List(int? page, string sort, string direction); The problem I have though is getting both the paging and the sorting to work. Say for example I have the following code: <%= Html.ActionLink("Title", "List", new { sort = "Title", direction = "ASC" }) %> I hoped this would generate a url containing all of the existing route values (including the current page) but it doesn't. Therefore when you click on the link the page is set back to null.

I have looked at all the overloads for the ActionLink helper but nothing looks like it will help. What I effectively need to do is generate a url/link with the existing page value (or potentially any other route values) and the new sort parameters.
