I'm new to DataGridViews. I have successfully created an unbound DataGridView that contains columns of string, numeric and date values, but I can't seem to figure out how to define a column as a numeric or date value--only strings. I have enabled sort on the columns so the user can click on any column to sort by that column. When I click on the numeric column, it sorts like:

...
The dates also sort as strings rather than dates.What is the code to change the data type of an unbound DataGridView column? Is it possible? If not, how can I do this with my unbound data?

The problem that I'm having is that dates are just written in columns as strings and not initialized with the proper cell format. Is there any way to format the date without any 3rd party software by just setting the value of a cell with a string??

I have an application that I need the user to enter in a date and time: 10/16/2010 1:00:00 PM How can I setup validation to check to make sure the user has entered in the date/time in that manner? I can use the validators in asp.net to check for date and even when I create a custom validator I don't know how to tell if the user has entered the data correctly. I am adding this functionality to an existing system. So I can't change the text box into two fields for validation.

View 3 RepliesI am new to asp.net and was trying to use datagridview in my webform. I was able to bind it to my database but I cannot make the datagridview's buttonfield respond. It seems the grid's SelectedIndexChanged event is not being fired or has issues with postback. Even a very simple statement is not being executed by the program e.g.

It seems the SelectedIndexChanged is not being fired. I have checked my IE and scripting is enabled.

I have a link button in a template field. The idea is that I would click the button and on selected row I would get the date from one of the selected row's cells. For some reason, it never pulls anything back. was able to get to pull a name field back but not the date.

I'm currently using Validation controls to validate a form. I tried adding a separate onclientclick javascript method to do some extra validation but it now appears to only run this and not continue on to run through the Validation controls. The extra javascript method is returning true, so I'm not sure if the onclientclick is clobbering the scripts from the Validation controls. Can anyone explain what I've done wrong?

So I have a gridview control and I am binding it's datasource dynamically base on a dropdownlist. The gridview contains autogenerated columns with auto generated edit buttons. The datasource binded to the gridview is IQueryable<T> where T will be different for different datasource.
My detail problem is below:
A GridView binded to datasource dynamically with all autogenerated columns. When user click edit link, it will display value in autogenerated textboxes.
When user click update link, I am able to capture the user entered value in the textboxes in RowUpdating event, then pass those values to Linq update function to update the database. Now, the problem begin when I try to dynamically add validation controls to each editing row. In RowDataBound event, I am checking the editrowindex then adding validation control to gridview cell and pointing to cell.controls[0] which is the textbox control when the row is in edit mode, I am dynamically setting the textbox control id so that the validation control can set controltovalidate property. The validation control works, but the updating function is setting everything on the grid to empty string.
I am check the textbox text value in the loop, which returns "" for all cells except the id column. It was returning the correct value before I add the validation control. I guess since I added the validation control on rowdatabound event, will it rerender it's own autogenerated textbox in edit mode so that the text value of textbox no longer available in rowupdating event?
Is there a better or correct way to get the cell textbox value? I am using ((TextBox)dc.Controls[0]).Text where dc is DataControlFieldCell in rowupdating event.
i have a complete form in my database as row for example name of the field ,is mandatory, sortid, regularexpression, datatype, maxlength , default value etc. So the form is completely dynamic.now i want to perform the client side validation on the form . What will be the best practice for doing that? like i have to see that if the field is mandatory check it for null and if not then leave it on the client side . i am thinking about setting hidden field for it .

I want the edit/delete button in that row to disappear if the month in the row is past month.
How could I do this ? I have set the label1.text = current month but I do not know how to set the edit/delete button to be visible/invisible on the condition of the data in the row.
I have written a small web app to take fill a dataset from an xml file, which is then bound to a Gridview control. The problem I am having is that I am trying to format a date field as it is currently displayed as '2010-06-03T16:37:26.043+01:00'. I can usually set a format to an item within a templatefield by setting the bind or eval text, but in this case I cannot.
