I've been trying to accomplish this for days without joy. I need to update a specific cell in a gridview with some static text when a button click that is outside the gridview. The cell i need to update is a template field.

I have a small gridview and the update works very well. The issue is I need to have one of the fields set to a value from my code either when the record is open for undating or when the update runs.

I am trying to update the value of a cell in a gridview at the same as conducting a post back to the DB....
Currently I am not able to even find teh control to puchthe data back to the cell, do I need to update the DB first then let the query read the updated record?

First, what I am showing here works fine, and I know how to do this if the nested control comes from the same bound table. I could leave it at that, but I don't like SQL code in my aspx page, and want to move it. I'm keeping it simple here, but I can move it to a data access layer later on..... for now, I want to understand what's going on when the page loads and the nested control is rendered and populated. WHAT I LEARN FROM THIS WILL BENEFIT ME ACROSS THE BOARD - NOT just for this instance!!!
My question is, how to grab the SQL query from the aspx page for the NESTED control and move it to the codebehind. I'd LOVE to also move the Selected Value parameter if possible, but mainly want to get the SQL out of the page. I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS for a GridView or any control, but I DO NOT know how to do it for a NESTED CONTROL from a different table - i.e. WHERE it fires (on GridViewEditing or GridViewUpdating or PageLoad....) so I can put in the SQL where it belongs.... and I'm PRETTY darn SURE this can be done without a 'foreach' loop. ALL I want to do is move the SQL Query in the EDIT template above to the code behind. I just don't know WHERE or WHEN in the code this fires and how to handle it when the table is different from the original GridView table. AND the cboCity.SelectedValue, if possible.

What I am currently doing is that I am using ListBoxItem, set Item Height and ItemSource at ListBoxItem Level, Add ListBoxitem to ListBox and then Add ListBox to Grid, It leaves me with just one row and multiple columns in the Grid, which is perhaps not the best way of doing it as it doesn't allow me to take benefits from UI Virtualization of Grid.

I am open to use any control i.e. Grid/ DataGrid provided it allows me to set Cell Height and item source at Cell level. In my requirement, Cell height depends on the Item duration and size of image, which means the height of the cells may not be same across cells in any particular row.

I have a gridview and I want to update a cell with a session variable username. In the Gridview1_RowEditing event I have this code :
GridView1.Rows(e.NewEditIndex).Cells(5).Text = Session("username")
It does not give me any errors and seems to work but the grid view cell do not take this session. When I'm clicking on the edit hyperlink this event is triggered.
Objective : Get the value of a particular cell in a particular row - when I click on a template field button link. How do I "select" that row so I can use code like datagridview.rowselected
or datagridview.selectedrowindex etc...
Right now I am using code like that and it does not get any values of the gridview because it does not know what the selected row is (may be because I want this to be done on template field click)
