Forms Data Controls :: Casting Object In DetailsView Template Table?
Jul 22, 2010
I use the DetailsView control to display selected employee's data for HR. The list of data elements has gotten pretty long so I thought I'd put some tables & panels inside the ItemTemplate and EditTemplate. Testing with NO code behind in effect works perfectly on display & update. Now I need to manipulate some stuff in the code behind which requires me to cast the controls I'm after. However old cast code doesn't work (it says the row index doesn't exist).
First is a clip of the DetailsView which gives me 3 nice columns.

Okay, so I have a Generic IList of custom objects that I want to use as a datasource for a repeater.
[Code]....
In the WebForm inside the repeater, I place this code:
[Code]....
when I try to run it, I get the error "Unable to cast object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1[MyCustomObject]' to type'MyCustomObject'. ". Which makes sense, really.
What's the best way round this? Is there any way I can get the direct cast working? I'm loath to have to create a custom list item that implements IBinding or something and bind that directly, as that'll mean a lot of legacy changes which may create further bugs. Or is there a better way?

The Detailsview has a template containing a textbox for one of it's fields.When an item is selected in the Gridview, I want to set a property of the textbox. How do I do that? I've tried Findcontrol for the item during Prerender of the detailsview. I've also tried many other things. Below is a portion of my aspx code followed by my VB code.
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataKeyNames="LU_DutyStations_ID" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1">
<Columns>
asp:CommandField ShowSelectButton="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Duty Station Code" HeaderText="Duty Station Code"

I have a Details view where I want to have a multi-select value, with the choices driven from another table.I need to iterate through the check-boxes in the list, and I do that by using a DetailsView1.FindControl("MyCheckBoxList") to find the check box list.The challenge I'm having now is that if I name the CheckBoxList differently in each of the templates (Item, Edit, Insert), then they each need a separate handler to find the control and iterate through the checkboxes. I can't find a method to fire a handler

I am using a DetailsView Control and have a "MemberStatus" field.
When using the templates in edit mode, I am using a dropdownlist to change the member status.
e.g.
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Member status:" InsertVisible="False" SortExpression="MemberStatus">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlMemberStatus" runat="server" DataSourceID="adsMemberStatus" CssClass="eitField" DataTextField="MemberStatus"
DataValueField="MemberStatusID" Width="120px" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("MemberStatusID") %>'>
</asp:DropDownList>
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Label6" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("MemberStatus") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
What I would like to achieve is, if the MemberStatus is changed during edit mode, e.g. from "Active" to "Deceased"
I would like to enable certain fields e.g. txtBoxDateDeceased, and attach a RequiredFieldValidator for the textbox field.

I've been struggling with trying to figure out how to do this for about 2 weeks now. I have a DetailsView with several template fields in it. The first field (Unit_Code) is a dropdownlist item where the user would select a Unit based off the Unit_Code's Unit Name. Further down I have a field named (System), system needs to get it's value from the selectedvalue or selectedindex that the user selected in the (Unit_Code) dropdownlist. I have another dropdownlist item (Component) that will need to get the selected value from System to sort on, so once I have the first Unit_Code to System figured out I should be able to figure out the System to Component part seeing as it will basically be doing the same thing.
My aspx page code is below:

I'm trying to add an DropDownList to a DetailsView by code, because i'm writing a solution that let's the user select an table and view your records and edit them, some of theese tables, have a foreign key column and the user must have to select some item in the list.
Below is my sample code:
[Code]....
the code above is working correctly, when the user click in the buttons New or Edit , the DetailsView opens correctly, showing the DropDownlist, but when the user click in the buttons update or insert , an error occurs, the viewState cannot be loaded:
Failed to load viewstate. The control tree which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree used to save viewstate during the previous request. For example, when controls are added dynamically, the controls added during a post must match the type and position of the controls added during the initial request.

I am trying to target a control in a Detailsview in my codebehind, however I am getting an error "Name "control" is not declared" for example, i have a FileUpload field in the edit template of the detailsview, which I am trying to access as
FileField.PostedFile.SaveAs("directory")
I also tried adding a reference to the Detailsview id such as DetailsView1.FileField.PostedFile.SaveAs("directory")

I would like to find controls in the detailsview control placed in the EmptyData Template of the gridview. I am trying to create Insert new record for the gridview control.
1. If there are existing records in the table - works fine and sets my two values: I placed Detailsview and Insert Button in the footer of the gridview. I needed to set the values of two fields. When I click on the Insert button it saves new record and sets the field with the value (code attached - works fine). I also have a popup extender that opens detailsview - this works just fine.
2, If ther are not records in the table - saves record but cannot find and set controls on the detailsview Same thing setup in the EmptyData Template. The record is saved but I cannot Find and set the field value on the control.
1. Link button (on click) in the gridview footer (works fine)
protected void LinkButton1_Click1(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string zupa1;
zupa1 = ddlSelectEmployee.SelectedValue;
try
{
DetailsView zupa = (DetailsView)gvTraining4.FooterRow.FindControl("DetailsView1"); TextBox zupa2 = (TextBox) zupa.FindControl("txtInsertEmployee");
zupa2.Text = zupa1;
}
catch
{
}
DetailsView dettraining = (DetailsView)gvTraining4.FooterRow.FindControl("DetailsView1");
TextBox training = (TextBox) dettraining.FindControl("txtTrainingType");
training.Text = "4";
}
2. EmptyDataTemplate.FindControl - can save record but cannot access txtInsertEmployee and txtTrainingType
DetailsView zupa = (DetailsView)gvTraining4.EmptyDataTemplate.FindControl("DetailsView1");TextBox
zupa2 = (TextBox)zupa.FindControl("txtInsertEmployee");TextBox
training = (TextBox)dettraining.FindControl("txtTrainingType");"4";

I have a bit column that is saved as 1 or 0 in the database. I want to check the value in the table and then do an if statement depending if its 1 or 0. How can I convert it to an int?
i had
lockValue = (int)sqlCommand1.ExecuteScalar();
I want to assign it to the lockValue int variable. I then want to go on and check
if (lockValue == 1) {
// stuff
}

I have a standard gridview and detailsview. My detailsview has some fields which are templates, with dropdownlists. The user selects a record in the gridview, then can go down to the detailsview, select Edit, and change some values (using dropdownlists).I am getting the error, "DDL has a selectedvalue which is invalid because it does not exist...." when I click Edit in the detailsview.
I know the problem has something to do with the dropdownlists not being instantiated or bound until I enter Edit mode. Is that right? In what event should I databind my dropdownlists? I've tried several things but could not get it to work. Do I have to loop through all the rows of my details view looking for the dropdownlists, or can I access them directly from some event?

I'm using a DetailsView object to present a record from a database in table format. I'm actually using and ObjectSource object as the data source for the details view. In the object I am using as the source for the ObjectSource, I have paired properties that hold decimals. This is, I have a property called Year1 and another property called Year1Change. This for years 1 to six. The values from the Year1 properties are in a cell, whereas the change values are bound to texboxes. The code for the frontend is the following:
[Code]....
Now, as you can see in the tbYr2RtCh textbox, I have an OnTextChanged property to call an event handler. This is because I want to do two things when the text changes. The first one is to make the font in the textbox bold if the value it holds is different from the Year2 property. The second one is to change the text on tbYr2RevCh to adjust the revenue for the percentage increase in the rate. The problem I have is that I cannot access the object that is the source for the data and make those changes directly in the object, instead of having to update the database. I don't want to update the database until the client says so, but the changes should be calculated immediately. I thought about creating an method in the object that I could specify in the ObjectDataSource as the update method, but I'm still not sure how to go about it.

I have a DetailsView (DV) control, an ObjectDataSource (ODS) control, and a button on a page. I have 2 classes in the App_Code directory (Customer and CustomerDAO). The DAO class provides static methods for the ODS control and simply hack values in (ie...no real database selects/updates). The Customer class has 2 properties (Id and Name) and a default constructor. The page takes an ID on the querystring and determines if the DV control is in insert or edit mode. If in edit mode, it sets the SelectParameter on the ODS (id field), calls ODS.Select(), and then calls DV.DataBind(). The existing (although fake) customer is loaded and display properly when this happens. I then change the name of the Customer in the DV and click the Button to save the new data.
Everything seems to be wired up correctly as the UpdateMethod that is specified in the ODS control is called and succeeds (even in my real example with my database). The problem is that the BoundFields in the DV control have not been updated with the new values and therefore the existing values are updated in the database and my changes are lost. I have handled the OnUpdating event of the ODS and the values are still the old values. I have also handled the OnItemUpdating event of the DV control and the NewValues IOrderedDictionary still has the old values in it also. In looking at the MSDN article for the UpdateMethod, it states the following:
Parameter Merging
Parameters are added to the UpdateParameters collection from three sources:
From the data-bound control, at run time.
From the UpdateParameters element, declaratively.
From the Updating event handler, programmatically.
I am using the BoundField classes in my DV control so I would have assumed that the first bullet above would have handled the updating of values, but it doesn't appear to work with the way I am doing it. If I set the values explicitly in the OnUpdating event that is fired by the ODS control (the 3rd bullet) the right values are updated (again...even in my real database situation). It seems like my only issue is that the automatic binding that I expect from the DV control isn't working as I would expect it to. Here is the code that I have in my fake example:

I am pulling a 'long' value from Session, using a generic property, and it is crashing. so I have:
public static T Get<T>(string key)

return (T)System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Session[key];
...
}
When debugging, the value is 4, and it crashes.

I have a GridView and DetailsView on the same page. If the GridView has data, I can Select a row and it brings up the DetailsView from which I can edit that record or click NEW to create a new record. Without a record to Edit, the New link and the DetailsView control is not visible. What is considered best practices for Inserting the 1st record using a same page Gridview / DetailsView combination?

I have a SQL DB with just 2 fields, ID and TEXT.What i was trying to do, was placing a Detailsview in EDIT MODE, then selecting from the DB like SELEC TOP 1 Text FROM DB.Then i placed a Ajax HTML Editor in the template field.How can i, keep the HTML Editor on the page, and use it for INSERT and/OR EDITING ?e.g.: on the first time the user opens the site management page, it will be blank, so it will show the HTML with no text on it. but the bottom button will be UPDATE and CANCEL. So when he enters the TEXT he clicks on UPDATE.

I am passing a query string into a new page and want a detailsview to insert whatever comments a user enters
I am getting an error AlbumUID does not accept nulls error.
I thought I passed the query string value to the insert statement but I must have missed something
Here's what I have:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDSAddComment" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyCDsConnectionStringHome %>"
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [Comments] ([Comments], [Rating], [AlbumUID]) VALUES (@Comments, @Rating, @AlbumUID)"

I have used this before with no issues. Now I get to the page with the detailsview using parms I pass with the key to the row. When the page opens the row I want to update is displayed.
I am having 2 issues. One when I change any of the fields and hit Update (the Edit button),
all rows are updating not just the row displayed. The second problem is I have an update_date and an Updated_by field with code in code behind in the Onitemupdating event and they are not updating at all. (This bit of code works fine in another page I have to updated similar fields on an insert).

I have a datatable with the following column names
ProviceID, ProvinceName, Year,
TPM, PM 10, PM 2.5, B(a)p
I'm trying to display data from this table in a gridview using template fields. Here's an example of a label in my item template
[Code]....
When i bind data to this grid view, i get an error saying column "PM 2" was not found. For some reason, the program is dropping the .5 from the column name. I am exploring the possibility of replacing the number with alphabets only but this may not be possible as the end user may not find it user friendly. Is there a way for me to get around this problem? I get a similar problem with B(a)p, it drops everything after the B. Any ideas on how to get the gridview to bind column names with special chars in it?
