Framework /starting Point For Social Networking Site In .NET?
Feb 16, 2010
I'm an ASP.NET/SQL Server developer and would like to develop a (intially) basic social networking site (gasp). Before I start from scratch with a blank solution in ASP.NET, I'm wondering if there are any frameworks out there ASP.NET specific that would serve as a good starting point. I'm already thinking of using the Google Maps jquery control for my Google Maps integration, as well as the 'sharethis' control for my social networking website sharing integration. Captcha for human authentication... But other than that I'm not sure what I can leverage... Nothing on Google jumped out at me on my search terms.
I'm also wondering if anyone else has done something similar and could share their post mortem/war stories with me.
I'm also open to learning a new platform/language if it would mean saving time - my experience is mostly in ASP.NET, so that is what I plan on using if it makes the most sense. My initial requirements are basic and realistic - profile setup (images, information, etc.), 'group' creation, Google Map integration, calendar controls shared by groups, SMS support, discussion forums among groups, searching for groups, OpenID integration most likely, etc. I am not going to try to build the entire site and then release it, but take baby steps and release pieces of functionality at a time.
EDIT: I've found DotNetOpenAuth which seems to be a nice API for handling OpenID for ASP.NET web forms. They also have an ASP.NET MVC version
EDIT2: I also found MS Web Platform. This looks like some good stuff. Anyone ever use it and think it would do well for this sort of app?
EDIT3: I found a library for DotNetNuke called ActiveSocial. It's priced right ($500) and has more than the features I need but lacks some. I wonder if anyone here has ever used AS before. Is DNN easy to extend so I can add Google Maps functionality and such? It doesn't say anywhere on snowcovered (the vendor that sells AS) if AS comes with the source. If it didn't, then I might be screwed because I wouldn't be able to integrate the functionality I want..
I am developing a social networking site.I want to create a photo album. But I dont know how to start. Please guide me and steps how to create aphoto album and how to store photos and fetch the photos.I am using asp.net,C#,sql server and Ajax.
I have a social networking website. I need a ASP.NET script for the below.
Address Book Import Members can import their contacts from Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, MSN, rediffmail and other networks like MySpace, linkedin, facebook and invite them to join your site.
I need you to develop just the script.
We will copy paste the script into our invite a friend page in the appropriate location into our website.
People who have done it earlier OR having a script quote.
I want you to deliver the script in a form, such that it is exclusively licenced to my domain and cannot be re-used by others thru copying it unless I authorise it.
How to get details of our website in google search on right side pannal..For Eg..If you search for aspsnippet .com in google search you will get the desc of your website on the right side panal with in a square box
Everything works as expected in VS under development (of course), but when deployed (local IIS) the log in view (sans css) comes up rather than the home index view. I've tried this with several test apps, including NerdDinner with the same results.
I want to allow unauthenticated users to browse most of the site, but I do have views that require authentication (fomrs). I don't want to see the login view by default, only when the user explicitly wants to log in, or trys to see a view that requires authentication. What settings need to be made to not default to the login view?
I have seen your codes to integrate facebook in our application but in none of the code you have written how to logout once authenticated in facebook. I am asking this bcoz facebook session has been started so need to provide user with logout button.
I have tested the solution in the tutorial for getting users information from Login with Facebook (AspSnippet dll). My answer: is it possible to get also First name, Last Name?
I am creating a Social Networking Website. I want to know how to add friends in a social networking website in which a user sends friend's request to other user and the other user approves or denies the request. The user also gets added to the friend's list.
I am unable to write code for this and also not found any such code. It would be very useful for me to get the code.
i am in the process of developing a social networking web app using asp.net mvc 2 and asp.net 3.5 sp1.I have implemented user authentication and role management (like admins, etc...) and i was wondering how i could implement page caching in such a scenario based on the user currently logged in.
Note that the web app page urls may, or may not contain the name of the user authenticated and that there are also pages available to both authenticated and both authenticated users.
What i would like to avoid is to make a cache version of a page for an authenticated user, available to a non authenticated or to another authenticated user.
All the facebook, twitter & LinkedIn api are working properly i have integrated this into my project. But still google api code is not findin in your site.
I have gone through your articles and I really enjoyed with all the facebook articles. In my aspx page in place of posting walls I want to send notification to facebook users. How can I do this.
I have listview which has bind with database, i need facebook share button with each record in list view and when user click the post share on the facebook wall.
i want to show the post which user has click on to share on facebook not whole page e.g
listview is bind with sql and fetching following record
1. record one <facebook share button> when user click on this button so record one should be share on facebook wall.
