Dynamically Show / Hide Wizard Navigation Controls

Oct 15, 2010

I have a <asp:Wizard> control with 6 or so steps. In the first 3 steps, I want to hide the default Wizard navigation (Next button, etc.), as each WizardStep's contents will handle that. For the last 3 or so steps, if possible, I want to use the built-in navigation. I've modified the <StepNavigationTemplate> contents, but that alone doesn't cut it, because it affects all steps. Here are my options:

Find a way to dynamically show or hide the StepNavigation from the codebehind. (I feel like this might be best -- is it possible?)
Use StepType with <StartNavigationTemplate>, <StepNavigationTemplate>, and <FinishNavigationTemplate> to switch between navigation options (marking multiple steps as "start" or "finish" feels like it's abusing the mechanism)
Switch to a <asp:MultiView> and handle navigation manually (I'd rather not do this)

Clearing Page Cache - Show Correct Status Always?

May 16, 2010

I use this type of cache code on my pages

<%@ OutputCache Duration="60" VaryByParam="*" VaryByCustom="browser" %>

An issue by example. I have a page with the asp.net 2 (MSVS 2005) membership menu controls <asp:logonview etc on them. This control show different menus depending on if the member is logged on or not. I am using forms cookie authentication. The sequence of events. Page1 has the above cache settings and a logonview menu control on it. I am not logged on. I goto Page1. I view the page, and the logonvew control shows the button to logon. So correctly it has not detected a membership cookie and shows the logon button. I log on. I go back to page1, yet the logonview has not updated the menu for the newly logon status, as the page is sourced from the cache. I have to wait 60 seconds before the page can be rendered correctly. When the page is updated for logon status, the menu button for logon does not show, it should show Welcome Member Joe Bloggs. How can all pages cache be cleared when a log on happens, so there is not cache limbo, and the logonview menu control shows the correct status always?

Setting Response / Status Generates "HTTP Status String Is Not Valid" Exception?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm writing an HTTP handler in ASP.NET 4.0 and IIS7 and I need to generate a file-not-found condition.

I copied the following code from Mathew McDonald's new book, Pro ASP.Net 4 in C# 2010. (The response variable is an instance of the current HttpResponse.)

response.Status = "File not found";
response.StatusCode = 404;

However, I found that the first line generates the run-time error HTTP status string is not valid.

If, instead of the lines above, I use the following:

response.Status = "404 Not found";

Then everything seems to work fine. In fact, I even see that response.StatusCode is set to 404 automatically.

My problem is that I don't want this to fail on the production server. So I'd feel much better if I could understand the "correct" way to accomplish this. Why did the first approach work for Mathew McDonald but not for me? And is the second approach always going to be reliable?

I know that MVC 2.0 can do this very easily but for my application it needs to be in 1.0 as that is what is used at the University. MVC :: Dynamic Navigation Page In 2 Or 3

Dec 4, 2010

I've been tasked with managing the re-write of a very large enterprise application's UI. The existing UI was built upon an infrastructure which leverages the EntLib 3's PageFlow application block and the Web Client Software Factory. It performs horribly - part of the reason we need this upgrade so badly.

The problem is that these pageflows are very complex, using extensive conditional page transitions. When editing a data form, selection of a single value can determine not only what page you will reach when you click "Next", but whether a sub-pageflow is entered upon navigation instead, or a new pageflow is opened in parallel, etc. We deploy our UI in such a way where we control our API, but we allow certain licenses to purchase our UI code and extend/modify it as they deem fit. One of our selling points is that we allow the customer to "configure" or redefine pageflows using the VS designer.

In transitioning to MVC2 (or 3), we'd like to continue to offer configurable, conditional navigation throughout our various data entry page sequences. However, although I have developed the beginnings of our app in MVC2, I'm not sure the best way of implementing this data-entry pageflow "conversion". Sure, I've had my resources produce some solid designs - but all of them seem to require implementation of a complex controllerfactory. But one of the main attractions of MVC2 for me was its lightweight codebase and resultant performance gains - and I'm afraid that bypassing portions of MVC2 functionality by writing custom factories and the like will drastically reduce the performance of the app, making our UI refresh virtually worthless.

My initial thought was to write a custom filter that would implement the OnActionExecuted method. Every controller's primary POST methods would be marked with this attribute. Upon execution it would evaluate what view the user was on and look up the navigation event for that view in configuration. This config would have a default "next page"/"previous page" mapping, and can also allow for defining a type which would use conditional logic to determine the next page based on the posted model data. The actionfilter would use this type to find what route to navigate to next. I'd like to pick you experts' brains on this - does this seem like a solid design? Is it using best practices? And will it indeed perform better than a controller factory, or am I completely off-base here?
