Jul 15, 2010

I would like to make a periodic background request from JavaScript on the client to my web application (ASP.NET, IIS 7), but I don't want the request to affect the ASP.NET session timeout

State Management :: Form Timeout Vs. Session Timeout Vs. Connectionstrings Timeout?

Jan 27, 2011

We have the timeout value set to 120 in our <form> tag within the web.config. We do not have a session timeout set.. and we have various connection strings.

We are having a problem where a session variable will disappear (become NULL) .. but, the form evidently remains 'open'.. or no re-login is required..... so, my question(s):

1. what is the relationship between form timeout and session timeout

2. how do I set session timeout

How To Handle Session Timeout In Ajax Calls

Mar 8, 2011

I'm making an ajax call using jquery to an asp.net mvc controller action:

[AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)]
public ActionResult GetWeek(string startDay) {
var daysOfWeek = CompanyUtility.GetWeek(User.Company.Id, startDay);
return Json(daysOfWeek);
}

When session times out, this call will fail, as the User object is stored in session. I created a custom authorize attribute in order to check if session was lost and redirect to the login page.

How To Fetch Data From Server Without Extending Session Timeout

Jan 13, 2011

Are there any ways in ASP.net to fetch data from the server without extending the session timeout? This needs to be done every few minutes without user interaction until the page is closed.

Additional context, as requested:

The pages in my webapp needs to poll the server every few minutes to check for a particular condition (emergency maintenance scheduled for 30 minutes time, in this instance). When the condition is true, the page will display a message to the user. When the condition is false, nothing needs to happen.

As I understand it, postbacks to the server reset the time until the session expires. We do not want the session to be extended/refreshed/reset/whatever the word is every time the page polls the server. I need a way to poll the server automatically without resetting the session timeout.

Is The Session Timeout Handled When Set SQL Server As State Handler

Apr 4, 2011

How, or maybe where, is the session timeout handled when you set SQL Server as state handler in an ASP.NET application?

Is it the .NET framwork who after loading session objects from the DB does a judgement on whether or not the objects are expired, or is it a job on the SQL Server itself that takes care of this? The reason I suspect (or even concidered) the latter possibility, is that the script that created the ASPState mentioned something about a ASPState_Job_DeleteExpiredSessions-element.

If it is so that it is an SQL Server job that cleans up, how often does this job trigger and how does it align with the timeout parameter in web.config?

Can Use Ajax To Get Current Time Remaining To Session Timeout

Oct 18, 2010

I would like to pop up a box that warns the user of session timing out in 5 minutes. There are lots of examples of this on the net and I can figure something out. My question however is how to get the time remaining.All examples I read about set a client side timer to countdown from last postback. I would like to do something different. I would like to make an AJAX call to the server and get the time remaining from the server. Is this possible?Since an AJAX call will not reset the session timeout timer can I read the number and send it back to the client?

Differences In Forms Auth Timeout And Session Timeout?

Feb 1, 2010

The session state timeout is set using this web.config element

<sessionState mode="InProc" cookieless="false" timeout="120" />
The forms auth is configured using this web.config element
<system.web>
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="30"
name=".ASPXAUTH"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
defaultUrl="default.aspx"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile"
enableCrossAppRedirects="false" />
</authentication>
</system.web>

What is the difference between the timeouts specified in each of these elements? If both are different, how would it work?

State Management :: Session Timeout Works Only In Test Server?

Jun 6, 2010

I have an scenario where, in the test server the timeout works fine, as defined in the web.config (60 minutes) but it ends prematurely (3 minutes or so) in the MSSQL server. Both are using tables from the MSSQL, the only difference resides in the App_Data folder, which is not in the MSSQL server, as the roles and membership are managed by the LocalSqlServer.

Am I doing wrong something? Is there a better way to prevent session time out?

AJAX :: Server And Client Side Timeouts - Server Timeout Not Triggering?

Nov 22, 2010

We have an UpdatePanel that is showing a gridview with loads of data in it. We have loads of well written sprocs that don't take very long, BUT we have a few horrible ones that take ages.

We do intend to rewrite them but in the interim we have put the ADO.NET commandtimeout up to 180s. The scriptManager.AsyncPostBackTimeout is set to 240s. We want to handle this on the serverside. One of the reports still fails (it's got a couple of nested cursors in it - someone who hasn't had SQL lesson 101 from me!).

Half the time, the nice error timeout message is shown using server side handling of the command timeout. The problem is that the other half of the time the commandtimeout doesn't seem to fire.

Security :: Valid Session Isn't Created On Re-logging In After Session Timeout

Feb 3, 2011

I created a user control for my web application that checks for Session Timeout. If the criteria are met for Timeout, I use Response.Redirect to send the user back to the login page. I include this user control in my Master page, and run the SessionTimeoutcode in the user control's Page_Init event. That all works great. However, once the user logs in again after time-out (and I have verified that the OnLoggedIn event does fire) the user is redirected to the DestinationPageUrl. That page runs the Session Timeout check when it loads (as it should) and the Session Timeout code "says" that the session is still timed-out.

ASP.NET: Session Does Not End, Session Timeout Checks Are In The Home/Customer Action?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm working to set up/correct my session timeout code, and have consulted numerous articles like this one and this SO post for ideas on how best to do this. The solution to detecting a session timeout that I continue to see over and over is to first check the Session.IsNewSession property for true, and if so, then check to see if a session cookie already exists. I guess the logic here is that the user has ended their last session that timed out, started a new session, but the old cookie wasn't yet removed. The code for those checks looks like this:

[CODE]...

The problem is that the session does not end, and all of my session timeout checks are in the Home/Customer action (I use MVC). So I'm redirected to Home/Customer, and I run through the checks above, but when I get to Session.IsNewSession, it's false, because the session is still alive (I assume because I'm still within the 120 minutes I have set)

AJAX Timeout Although Request Is Completing Long Before Timeout Duration

Feb 15, 2010

I have an ASP.Net application that makes an AJAX request to retrieve at report. The report can run for a long time so I set the asyncpostbacktimeout in <asp:ScriptManager /> to 600. However, when I try to run the report, if it runs for longer than 90 seconds it fails to come back. I can see in the IIS logs that the POST request succeeded with a 200 status and I can see the time taken is much less than 600.

The web page dutifully waits for the entire 600 seconds before returning with a timeout error:

Error:

Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerTimeoutException:

The server request timed out.

Is there any setting I should be checking in IIS? Connection timeout is 900 seconds.

AJAX :: "reset" The Session Timeout Timer?

Feb 22, 2010

I searched around and couldn't find a clear answer to this: I have a form which collects information solely using AJAX and takes about 40 minutes or so to complete all the way through (multiple screens, all via AJAX UpdatePanels).There are multiple AJAX calls and UpdatePanel changes during the completion of the form, and all calls are asynchronous- there are no browser refreshes.I expect the Session timer to be "re-set" every time an AJAX call is made from my form?

I would expect it to, and from my own testing, it appears to. But I have had some reports from end users which make me think otherwise.

Web Forms :: Resetting Session Variables And Forms On Submit?

Apr 23, 2010

I created a MultiView with about 10 different views for a data entry program. As the user steps through the process, they key the data requested and conditionally takes them to the next appropriate view and stores the keyed data from a text box in a session variable. At the end of the process, it displays all of the information that was keyed and then using the on_click handler on the confirm button I insert it into a SQL table and provide a confirmation number. After that is complete, the user will click home, which defaults the activeviewindex back to 0 and proceed with keying the next callers information in.

When they click home and start to proceed back through the screens, it has all of the information from the previous session prepopulated in all of the controls. Since I am not really using a form submit, I can't figure out how to reset all the textboxes and session variables after the SQL insert. I tried looping through the controls but I guess they have to be active to clear them and am looking for something simple to perform this operation without manually setting each textbox.text back to "".
