Interaction Between WCF Service And Sites With Cookieless Session, Different Subdomains?
Dec 11, 2010
I have several ASP.NET sites, hosted on the same domain (different subdomains) and working via HTTPS. I have WCF service, hosted on the same domain. I have a separate state server for sessions.
All sites use cookieless session (if someone asks why - i will reply later, but it's a 'must')
On my sites, I use grid components from Telerik (but actually it does not matter) that ask for data from WCF service and must be filled with this data.
The problems are:
1) I cannot manage to make POST request to WCF service from javascript: for some reason it's always either GET or OPTIONS (no matter if I use Sys.Net.WebServiceProxy invoke or just a plain jquery AJAX request). It happens even if I indicate COOKIE mode, not cookieless. Maybe because of this I am getting "405 Method not allowed" error - WCF is set for POST request, but the site sends GET...
2) I cannot manage to retrieve SESSION from my websites! I tried approach, that I found, but WCF always uses OWN session, instead of 'connecting' to existing ASP.NET session, despite on ASP.NET compatibility mode. I need SESSION to exchange data between my sites and WCF service
3) I don't have idea currently, how to manage security when exchanging data between mentioned ones, in the light of above-mentioned problems...
4) I don't know exactly, how web.config for WCF service should look like in my case, because I've seen tons of different variants, but all for some simple cases.
Would be really appreciated for the help! I'm stuck for 2 or 3 weeks already, far behind the plan, but nothing still works... I can see there are some pieces of info about similar problems, but I'm afraid to miss some small thing - in web.config or method attribute or IIS setting, etc - and f... up everything.

Is it possible to use mixed cookieless sessions with cookie sessions? I've an application that captured user details and then redirect for payment to an ssl page. I was wondering if this is possible? [URL] redirects to [URL] Note: the session Id in the latter url. So in essence, we use the standard cookie session for the majority of the application but when we transfer to an ssl page we pass the SessionId to the https url to pick up the session. I've tried this locally but it starts a new session.

How do you generate a URL for that uses cookieless sessions?
Neither Request.RawURL or Request.URL has the rewritten version that includes the sessionid.

I have an uploadify control working fine in a vb.net web application - however whenever I switch on cookieless session state in web.config (cookieless="true") - it stops working.
In my upload IHttpHandler I can see that the data stored by uploadify is nothing:
Private Function Process(ByVal context As HttpContext) As String
Dim File As HttpPostedFile
File = context.Request.Files("filedata") ' Nothing
Dim FileExt As String = context.Request("fileExt") ' Nothing, etc

I have an application running ASP.NET. I have different domains and different sub-domains. I want the domains to share session with their sub domains.
For Example, the following domains access this application:
[URL]
If a user goes to www.example1.com and print.example1.com, I want it to use the same session. If the user were to go to www.example2.com and print.example2.com, I would want it to use a different session than the *.example1.com.
The way I used to handle it was a hack in page_load that works perfectly in IIS6:
Response.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionId"].Value = Session.SessionID;
Response.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionId"].Domain = SiteUtility.GetCookieDomain();
(SiteUtility.GetCookieDomain would return .example1.com or .example2.com depending on the url of the request) Unfortunately, this no longer seems to work for iis7. Each subdomain/domain a user goes to, the user gets a new session cookie.
I then found the web.config entry: '<httpCookies domain=".example1.com" />. This works great for sharing session cookie between example1.com subdomains. Unfortunately, this completely screws up session state for *.example2.com.

There are subdomains: sub1.domain.ru, sub2.domain.ru, sub3.domain.ru, sub4.domain.ru. On default page there is a code:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string subdomain = Cache[key] as string;
if (subdomain != null)[code]...
Will users see their subdomain name in different subdomains(sub1.domain.ru, sub2.domain.ru, sub3.domain.ru, sub4.domain.ru) ?

In ASP.NET, I'm a bit confused about role of cookies in session state. Whats is the difference between normal session state and cookieless session state?

When Session attribute Cookieless ="True" the page.Ispostback is always false.Cant understand the reason behind it.
And one more thing what is happening when we click Remember Me option in login control.As per my knowledge it is storing authentication cookie in it. If we can add data to authentication cookie then why we need session...we can add session data in that.. and authentication token is also regenerated for every new request like sessions.....i got confused after browsing for few hours.
Which one is more secure using cookies or URL for authentication and session.

I have two exactly the same web sites hosted in two different machines under IIS 7.5.
ASP.NET state service is running on my machine and the web.config is updated in both sites with the following code:
<sessionState mode="StateServer" stateConnectionString="tcpip=192.168.1.77:42424" cookieless="false" timeout="120"/>
The allow remote connection is set to 1 in registry in order for the second web site to access the state server.Both web sites have the same machine key:
<machineKey validationKey="7CB8DF6872FB6B35DECD3A8F55582350FEE1FAB9BE6B930216056C1B5BA69A4C5777B3125A42C4AECB4419D43EC12F168FD1BB887469798093C3CAA2427B2B89"[code]....
Additionally both sites are configured in IIS to have the same Identifier.What I want to do is that both these sites share the same session data for example being able to do the following:
// At web site 1:
Session["key"] = "value"[code]....
The problem is that I can't manage to accomplish this test and really can't understand what I am doing wrong.

After doing some research, I found that <sessionState> can be hosted in SQL Server allowing applications to read from the same source. Essentially my app has two sides: a WCF library and an ASP.NET MVC 3 web site, the WCF has authentication and other DB IO methods and the MVC does the display. Now, the MVC stores a value in the session and then the WCF reads it and creates another for the MVC to read later. Problem is, neither can read each others session data, they can write to the same repository but can't share.
How do I go about them sharing the same information? How can I tell <sessionState> that the session started on the MVC side is the same as the WCF side and viceversa? I've tried

I built a scraper for an ASP.NET site (specifically a Jenzabar course searching portlet) that would create a new session, load the first search page, then simulate a search by posting back the required fields. However, something changed, and I can't figure out what, and now I get HTTP 500 responses to everything. There are no new fields in the browser's POST data that I can see.I would ideally like to figure out how to fix my own scraper, but that is probably difficult to ask about on StackOverflow without including a ton of specific contex

Basically I have a page where a user can select up to 3 vehicles by make and model. I have 3 divs on the page that is generated with a basic foreach loop. When the user selects a make and model from respective dropdown lists I am firing a javascript function that returns a JSonResult that loads a dynamic partial view into a seperate div. This partial view displays a div with a grid whereby the user can select one of n-number of services using a checkbox.Next what I would like to do is if the user selects a servce for the one of the vehicle selections, I would like to add this selection to a list of "ServiceSelection" that is part of my viewmodel. Ultimately the user would click a button that would redirect to the next step in the process and pass the entire updated viewmodel to this new page.

I have an ASMX webservice hosted alongside my ASP.NET web app. Now, I need to get the users session into the Webservice. To test this I made this simple method:
[WebMethod(EnableSession = true)]
public string checkSession()
{
return HttpContext.Current.Session["userid"].ToString();
}
So, first I login to my web app, then in the browser goto my webservice and click "checkSession" on that auto generated test page. I have tested this on 3 computers. All 3 of those work fine with the webapp(so the sessions are being created etc), and 2 of those return the value of Session["userid"] on invoking the webmethod, however the last computer returns "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" because Session is null.
So, whats the difference between these computers and why can my ASP.NET app get the sessions on all computers but the webservice cant?

Im using asp.net website with WCF service, having wsHttpBinding,Aspnet compatibility enabled, specified as Sessionmode -allowed, service behavior- isinitiated and client session cookie enabled. Its looking like Asp.Net session object and WCF Session( HTTPContext.Current.Session) work independently. How can I share Asp.net Session value to WCF Session and vise versa.
