MVC :: Hide/Show Content Using ActionFilterAttribute/AuthorizeAttribute?
Aug 19, 2010
I'm using MVC 2 with futures, and I'm trying to hide/show content based on role. Is there a way with ActionFilterAttribute or AuthorizeAttribute if the authentication fails to not show a partial view on a controller all through attributes? Or is all I can
do with those attributes is redirect or throw up an error message? I just need the child action to return nothing basically if it fails the authentication.
I found a way using ActionFilterAttribute, but it's kind of a hack because it still calls the ChildAction on the controller and then I'm setting the result to empty afterwards. I'm looking for it not to call the Action/ChildAction at all if the authentication fails. Is there a way to restrict that call?
public
override
void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext [code].....

I have an action filter for verifying account types that would redirect if necessary by calling filterContext.RedirectToAction(actionName). This doesn't seem to be working anymore.
The main controller action still gets called and then I end up with an error about http headers since it looks like the call to filterContext.RedirectToAction did send back a redirect but then since the controller action still fires, it also sends back content.
What's the right way to redirect to a different action from within an ActionFilterAttribute?

A well-known benefit of MVC is its suitablility for Test Driven Development (TDD) because you can directly call your controller actions from your test methods.
How can you test the combination of a controller action with a ActionFilter attribute (using OnActionExecuted to modify the ActionResult returned by the Action)? If I just call the Action, it returns the ActionResult from the action, but the filter attribute is never invoked. I think maybe you can get it by Controller.ActionInvoker.InvokeAction(controllerContext, "ActionName"), but you have to accurately mock so much of the controllerContext to make it work that it's a real pain.

I would like to create a custom action filter attribute that adds a value in the HttpContext items that would be accessible during model binding.
I have tried to add it in the OnActionExecuting but it that seems the modelbinding is exectued before the filter. Maybe there's a method in the modelbinder that I could override that will be fired after the filter and use the value injected by my filter.
What I want to do, is to inject a validation context (the library I use for validation supports context, it is nvalid.net (www.nvalid.net) I would like to be able to place an attribute such as
[ValidationContext("Prevalidation")]
on my actionresult method, so that the validation that occurs in my custom model binder could know which context to use when doing the Validation. That's why I can't simply make a custom model binder.

Is there a way to not show the masterpage when working in design view in visual 2008?
I'm working on a pretty small screen resolution and the master page is taking up a lot of the space.
I would just like to display my content, whit out the masterpage. you can't edit it anyway , so it's pretty useless.
I have been going trough the settings of visual studios 2008 but i haven't had any success there.
i know this feature wasn't possible in 2005 so i'm having my hopes up for 2008.

My master page has 3 content place holders:
1. left side bar
2. middle content area
3. right side bar
So it looks like:
<div id="left"></div>
<div id="content"></div>
<div id="right"></div>
On a particular view page (.aspx) that inherits the master page, I want to now show #3 (right side bar).
So I don't want the to be rendered at all.

What is the most straight forward way to use AuthorizeAttribute and JsonResult together so that when the user is not authorized the application returns a Json error rather than a log in page?The two things I am currently considering are extending AuthorizeAttribute or just making a new attribute that implements IAuthorizationFilter.

im trying to do the following test:
i have one web page (test) and two masterpages (master_1 & master_2).
the test's masterpage is determined by querystring, so far it's working fine. both master pages have a set on links in content place holder area, but is it possible i can hide the content place holder where my links are, from one of the masterpage when my test page loads, because i don't wish to use the links in the masterpage for my test page. i don't want to delete the links either as i'll need them later on.

I'm writing an MVC app that is a front-end for an existing system with it's own authentication process. I want to mimic the behavior of forms authentication with the [Authorize] attribute redirecting to a log-on page, but the logged in status is handled completely by API calls to the backend system. What do I need to do for ASP.NET MVC to recognize a user as "authenticated" if I'm not using the Forms authentication system?

I have a database where i want to log my user into and for this issue i want to customize the AuthorizeAttribute i am wrong ?? have some easier way to do it ??
public class CustomAuthorizeAttribute : AuthorizeAttribute
{
// the "new" must be used here because we are overriding
// the Roles property on the underlying class
public new Authorization.SiteRoles Roles;
protected override bool AuthorizeCore(HttpContextBase httpContext)
{
if (httpContext == null)
throw new ArgumentNullException("httpContext");
string[] users = Users.Split(',');
if (!httpContext.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated)
return false;
int found = Convert.ToInt32(httpContext.Session["role"]);
return Authorization.CheckRolesCompliance(Roles);
}
}
ERROR: 'CustomAuthorizeAttribute.AuthorizeCore(System.Web.HttpContextBase)': no suitable method found to override

I thought about creating a custom AuthorizeAttribute that will prevent logged in users calling a action ( [UnAuthorized] so to speak)
Tried creating a custom AuthorizeAttribute and override the AuthorizeCore method, but not sure this is the right approach.
(does not work anyhow...get an error telling me "no suitable method found to override")
[Code]....

I've been tinkering with the Nerddinner tutorial (upgraded to the new MVC 2.0 version actually) and I am trying to figure out how to dynamically hide/show fields in the EditorForModel template.I have added a new field to the model and a dropdown list for it in the editor, and I would like to be able to toggle the visibility on a couple of textboxes if a user selects a particular value from the dropdown list.
I did manage to access/manipulate the values of the textboxes using javascript (by altering the "onblur" example in the tutorial app), but couldn't figure out how to access the properties of them.

I have a datagrid where each row has information on Employees in a company. I would like to allow each row the ability to show/hide extra information. My first idea was use the CollapsiblePanelExtender from the AJAX toolkit and have each row like this:
<ajaxtoolkit:collapsiblepanelextender
TargetControlID="panel2">
ExpandControlID="LinkButton1"
[Code]....
This works very well but it can be computationally expensive. The extra information panel has a lot of textboxes/labels, all of which gets its values from the database. Everytime the page loads all the data is got from the database at the start, some of it is hidden.
Is there a better way to achieve my goal? Or is there a way to only load an employees extra details when the Show/Hide button is click?

I'm only a newcomer to ASP.NET MVC and am not sure how to achieve a certain task the "right way".
Essentially, I store the logged in userId in HttpContext.User.Identity and have written an EnhancedAuthorizeAttribute to perform some custom authorization.
In the overriden OnAuthorization method, my domain model hits the database to ensure the current user id can access the passed in routeValue "BatchCode". The prototype is:
ReviewGroup GetReviewGroupFromBatchCode(string batchCode);
It will return null if the user can't access the ReviewGroup and the OnAuthorization then denies access.
Now, I know the decorated action method will only get executed if OnAuthorization passes, but I don't want to hit the database a second time to get the ReviewGroup again.
I am thinking of storing the ReviewGroup in HttpContext.Items["reviewGroup"] and accessing this from the controller at the moment.

I have two asp.net buttons inside a template (Expand and Collapse) I want to implement a simple client side javascript function to hide the expand button after press it and show the collapse button and vice versa.
<asp:Button ID="btnExpand" runat="server" CommandName="Expand"
CommandArgument='<%# Container.DataElement("Id")%>' Text="+" />
<asp:Button ID="btnCollapse" runat="server" CommandName="Collapse"
CommandArgument='<%# Container.DataElement("Id")%>' Text="-" />
I tried OnClientClick event but I didn't know how to get the sender button and the second button from javascipt because they're in a template and their IDs will be generated.
I tried also to change their visibility from the code behind in the server (by Visible property) but the problems is the event handler will be fired after the postback and the changes will not be applied in the client.

UPDATE : Figured it out..
The objects I was passing to the ValidatorHookupControl were'nt being set properly (were null). Now that they are, the messages are currectly dissapearing when the hooked up control looses it's focus.
I have some ClientValidation controls that have ClientSideValidation methods which work fine when validating the page..
However, how can I make it so that when a certain control that a CustomValidators clientside method kicks in and udates the validation message depending on whether the validation has passed or not. (Like the RequiredFieldValidator or RegExValidator).
My Customvalidators do not have their ControltoValidate properties set as some of them depend on multiple controls.
I don't want any postbacks (full or partial).
I have tried..
1) Adding an onchange attribute on dropdowns, radioboxes and checkboxes that call a helper clientside method which calls Page_ClientValidate('GroupName'), then setting window.location back to the control in question (as it went back to top of screen).
Using this method the args.IsValid is still being set by the ClientSideValidation method.
2) And I have tried ValidatorHookupControl (control, validator) but that doesn't seem to work either.
