MVC :: Testing A Worker Role Locally?

Jul 6, 2010

I'm writing a worker role to handle a custom built email queue. Before I get to the tricky stuff, I'm having a wee problem - I can't test my worker role locally or see any console output or anything.I'm new to ASP.NET MVC (Having shifted from Rails/Django) so I'm not entirely sure if it's even possible to run a worker role locally, or what the case may be?

Installation :: Testing A Cloud Application Locally?

Nov 26, 2010

I am currently building a web application that will involve many servers to get it to run efficiently. I am trying to test this web site at home and I have a few computers running the website. To connect to the website I would type this into the address bar http://192.168.0.200:8080 or I would typehttp://192.168.0.201:8080. However when I transfer my site from one computer to another the web browser can no longer read the cookies. I would like to set up a home DNS server and have the computers in my house access the site like this w1.MySite.com and w2.MySite.com instead of http://192.168.0.200:8080 or I would type http://192.168.0.201:8080 so I can test if my cookies are working accross subdomains. how to set up a local DNS server so I can do this?

Visual Studio 2008 - How To Save Time When Testing / Debugging Locally

Nov 4, 2010

I have alway tested/debugged my web applications by using f5 to "Start Debugging". Recently (yesterday) I have begun to start without debugging then attach the debugger to the webdev process if I needed to set breakpoints or anything. So far I haven't noticed much of a performance increase when not using the debugger. I am curious about how others save time when running locally.

Architecture :: Unit Testing - Testing Private Methods Using PrivateObject?

Feb 23, 2011

Recently for a class to implement unit test for one of its private methods I used PrivateObject by creating private accessor instead of refelection, to which i received a code review comment as below

"My main concern with Private Object is the use of object[] in constructor. It replaces strong typing enforced by compiler with JavaScript-style run-time error detection.Consequently , personally, I would not recommend it."

Comments above confused me beacuse as per my understanding reflection also needs the object[] to invoke any method.

Integration Testing Web Services Against A Testing Database?

Oct 27, 2010

I'm currently building a .net web application that uses WCF web services to allow a Flex front end to access the database.

I'm in the process of setting up some unit/integration style testing on the web services and am trying to work out the best way to allow the tests to access and modify data in a separate test database.

Currently, the connection string in my unit test project points to my testing database, and the connection string in my web services project points to my development database. However, as I am using Linq it appears that when I call the web service methods from my test class, it uses the development database connection string. I have looked into creating mock objects or in-memory database but I believe the same issue would occur.

Is there a way to get this to work, or is my entire idea about what I want incorrect, in which case is there a better way to set this up?

Security :: How To Create Custom Role Information Instead Of Using Built-in Role Database

Nov 13, 2010

Usually in sub-folder we will limit the access right to some roles and this feature requires pre-defined database schema.

However, if i still want to use this role feature of asp.net, but I do not like the pre-define database schema, I want to extract role information from my own database table and bind it to the role.

When adding a role (making use of asp.net's role provider), i cannot find a method to add a role including a description.the asp.net Role table in SQL makes provision for a role description, however the only method available is:Roles.CreateRole(string RoleName);here is no overload to include a description. Is there an out of the box way of including the description? or should i go about this myself?

Way To Attach To The Worker Process In VS

Jun 2, 2010

I'm using VS 2010. And in VS 2010 it's even more painful now to attach to the worker process when you want to test your local IIS site via IIS, not the VS built-in web server. It's more painful because now when you select the worker process () via the Debug Menu | Attach to Process | w3wp.exe it brings up an additional prompt asking if you're sure you want to do this.

Using MapPath From A Worker Thread?

Feb 24, 2010

I have a WCF service method that's running in a worker thread I spin from another method. I need to map a relative service app path ("~/Templates/a.template") to the physical path ("D:WebTemplatesa.template"), but I can't use HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath because HttpContext.Current is null in a worker thread. How else can I reach MapPath method?

Iis - Web Garden - Max Worker Threads?

Oct 5, 2010

I'm investigating some performance improvements that can be made to our web server and ASP.NET application. This page contains a few things that we can do.We currently have two worker processes running as a garden. Do each of these worker processes have their own ASP.NET threadpool? Or do both of these worker processes share a single threadpool and the max number of worker threads is shared across these processes? This post seems to suggest that the two processes share a common ASP.NET threadpool. All w3wp.exe threads do is take requests from HTTP.SYS queue, process it, and hand the request toASPNET_ISAPI.DLL, who then deposits those requests into the ASP.Net request queue, and the ASP.Net threadsBut this post suggests that each worker process contains their own ASP.NET threadpool. Each process (w3wp.exe) has its own CLR thread pool which has the configured maxworkerthreads value (20 default).

Net - Update A Page From A Worker Thread?

Jul 30, 2010

I have a ASPX page which queries from a database. Once we have the dataset it is bound to a gridview and displayed on the page. All this happens in the Page_Load event.Ofcourse this a simplistic approach. What is the best way to inform the user that data is being retrieved and when we have the data to update the page with the results in the dataset.I want all this to happen within the same ASPX page and do not want to hop around pages to achieve this. I looked at update panels however it wasn't clear to me how this could be done with an update panel without having a control which triggers the update for the update panel. There are no controls on my page whhich initiate the database query, it occurs as the page is loaded

How To Create A Global Timeout Background Worker In PHP

Jan 28, 2010

Background:

I have an inherited web application that uses Flash AS2 and PHP 5.x on IIS (Windows 2008 R2) with MySQL. There is a setting for a timeout that does not work - no code was ever written but the client has the radio button to turn it on and off. The setting is saved in the MySQL database.

Requirement:

The timeout should give a pop-up when there is 1 minute to go and then redirect to a new page after the time has expired.

Question:

Is there a way to use a global timer as a standalone application (like a background worker in DotNet) without effecting the existing Flash or PHP code? I can think of several ways to include code in the application but I was needing a way to do it without having to add code to the 400 or so pages of existing code. The solution can use ASP.NET or PHP as both are available on the Server.

currently, i am facing the timeout of asp.net session. For example, the period of sleeping is 25 mins, the thread will not be processed because the asp.net session is timeout in 20 mins.

Configuration :: Worker Process Recycle, Every 60 Seconds?

Jul 13, 2010

We recently had to enable Memory Recycling on a 2.0 app pool (IIS6). We checked both boxes, leaving in the default values of 500 MB for virtual memory and 192 MB for used memory. Here's where it gets interesting. Every 60 seconds, on the dot, the worker process is forced to recycle. Our tests were spamming the site with concurrent users trying to get the virtual memory up to 500MB, but we never could (as viewed in task manager). However, that didn't matter. We tested it by simply recycling the pool and hitting one page, once, and seeing around 30MB allocated and then just waiting 60 seconds and watching the process die in task manager (and a new one start up). We've increased the value for maximum virtual memory to 768MB and the issue *appears* to have gone away, but just arbitrarily accepting a fix isn't how we like to do things. I haven't found any officially reported bugs, kb articles, or solutions on blogs that point to what is causing this. To me, this means either it's some crazy environmental issue or the answer is really obvious and we just can't see it.
