Passing A JavaScript Variable To A Helper Method?
Feb 24, 2011
I am using ASP.NET MVC 3 and the YUI library.I created my own helper method to redirect to an edit view by passing in the item's ID from the Model as such:
window.location = '@Url.RouteUrl(Url.NewsEdit(@Model.NewsId))';
Now I am busy populating my YUI data table and would like to call my helper method like above, not sure if it is possible because I get the item's ID by JavaScript like:
var formatActionLinks = function (oCell, oRecord, oColumn, oData) {
var newsId = oRecord.getData('NewsId');
oCell.innerHTML = '<a href="/News/Edit/' + newsId + '">Edit</a>';
};

How can I call a .net method in inline code using a javascript variable?My code looks like this:
for ( var i = 0; i < numberIterations; i++ )
{
var result = <%# GetFilterTagURL( myArray[i].Value, false) %>;
//do stuff with result
}
This block is inside a javascript block; the GetFilterTagURL method is a a .net method and I want to pass the variable myArray[i].Value as the first parameter.
UPDATE:I guess that, as you say, I'll have to create a web service to achieve what I want.

I would like to create a static helper method that I can call from a view.
Is it possible for a helper method to have access to the current ViewContext without needing to explicitly pass the ViewContext to the method as a parameter?
Something like HttpContext.Current except for ViewContext.

Is there a way to pass a reference of a page to a helper class? Scenario: [ASP.NET 2.0 Web Application] The page is a content page which has a MasterPage. The page calls a method in the helper class and passes the page byRef as an argument. The method in the helper class tries to find a control on the passed in page and set values. Problem: Only the MasterPage is being exposed and not the page I am trying to pass. Any recommendations on passing the page so that I can set the values of the controls within it?

I'm trying to write a controller method that returns an ActionResult.
In this method, i would like to:
1. call an HTML helper method
2. Capture and store the HTML helper's rendered HTML in a string
3. Return the method with the rendered HTML wrapped as a JSON
How do i call the Html Helper method from my controller method? Simply using the static class HtmlHelper does not work.

Can I call Ajax.BeginFrom from a custom helper method ?
AjaxHelper is not available in a custom helper method, so I tried to pass the "Ajax" available in ViewPage to Helper method while calling it, but then in method, BeginForm is not available on that passed "Ajax" parameter.

I am using ASP.NET MVC 3 and NUnit. I am trying to write a unit to test one of my helper methods. Here it is:
public static class UrlHelperAssetExtensions
{
private static readonly string yuiBuildPath = "http://yui.yahooapis.com/2.8.2r1/build/";
public static string YuiResetFontsGridsStylesheet(this UrlHelper helper)
{
return helper.Content(yuiBuildPath + "reset-fonts-grids/reset-fonts-grids.css");
}
}
Here is my unit test:
[Test]
public void YuiResetFontsGridsStylesheet_should_return_stylesheet()
{
// Arrange
RequestContext requestContext = new RequestContext();
UrlHelper urlHelper = new UrlHelper(requestContext);
// Act
string actual = urlHelper.YuiResetFontsGridsStylesheet();
// Assert
string expected = yuiBuildPath + "reset-fonts-grids/reset-fonts-grids.css";
Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual);
}....................................

Now I found out how to create custom html helpers
using System;
namespace MvcApplication.Helpers {
public class InputlHelper {
public static string Input(this HtmlHelper helper, string name, string text) {
return String.Format("<input name='{0}'>{1}</input>", name, text);
}
}
}
Now how to turn it into a strongly typed helper method InputFor Like it is in the framework?I don't need the Html.TextBoxFor method, I know it exists. I am just curious in how to implement this behavior myself and used this as a simple example.PS. I was looking in the mvc source code but couldn't find a trace of this mysterious TextBoxFor. I only found TextBox. Am I looking at the wrong code?

I'm evaluating two options of accessing a server side data on client side. Little bit confused about the efficiency or may be you can call it as finding best approach to do it.
I need to access a server side data may be an integer value in javascript on client side. I know about two options to do it.Create a public variable or property on server side and set it to javascript variable on client side as below:
var value = eval(<% =value %>);
Create a asp hidden variable and set value in this hidden variable from server side and access it through javascript using document.getElementById().
Which is the best approach and what are the pros and cons?

I am using VS 2008 SP1. My also have included CSS Friendly adapter [URL] in my project ( I mentioned this because my GridView Empty data template is not showing when using GridView's CCS Friendly adapter). I have a GridView and a DetailsView. When a record in GridView is selected its details information is shown in the Details View. Type of Data source I am using is ObjectDataSource. My Insert and Update methods works perfectly. It is only the Delete method that is passing null values to the underlying object delete method. My source codes for both the UI, BLL, DAL is shown below

My Business Object code is below :

I'm sure I'm going about this wrong but I'm trying to write a simple javascript method that will set a hidden type value upon a link click. I'm using the Html.BeginForm() helper that contains two links similar to:
@Html.ActionLink("Delete Review Only", "Delete", new { id = Model.ReviewId }, new { onclick = "SetDeleteType(1);" })
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
function SetDeleteType(selectedtype) {
document.supportform.deleteType.value = selectedtype;
document.supportform.submit();
}
The supportform name obviously doesn't exists since I'm using BeginForm() and can't specify a form name. Is there a clever way of doing this without calling Forms(0) using jQuery or something or am I completely off?

I am thinking this is a pretty simple problem... but I can not get it to function.I just want to get the calendar control to change a date which subsequently modifies a database select statement. I can get the current code to process without error, but the variable set is always a click earlier. Of course, I want the variable to be set upon any change in the calendar control.
public partial class NewBusinessReport : System.Web.UI.Page
{
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
[code]...
Does this make sense? I just want it so that when SelectionChanged gets fired the Calendar1SelectCommandDate passes the correct date to the Page_Load page. The error I get now is:"The name 'Calendar1SelectCommandDate' does not exist in the current context"I get that the variable does not exist in the context. That actually seems to make sense based on what I have coded; however, I try to get that variable established and I still seem to be headed in the wrong direction.Basically, I have four calendar controls, one for a date (period 1 start, end and then period 2 start, end). I want to set the program so any change in that date sets off a new Select statement into the SQL server.

I have an application that has JS calling ASMX files to do asyncronous requests, using ASP.NET AJAX.
The problem is that I use always the same "onError" function, and now I don't know how to identify the method that rised the error, and it is giving me a lot of problems to debug errors. The parameter "data" of the onError method does not give enough information, for
example:
en System.ComponentModel.BaseNumberConverter.ConvertFrom(ITypeDescriptorContext context, CultureInfo culture, Object value)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeInternal(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToTypeMain(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer, Boolean throwOnError, Object& convertedObject)
en System.Web.Script.Serialization.ObjectConverter.ConvertObjectToType(Object o, Type type, JavaScriptSerializer serializer)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.StrongTypeParameters(IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.WebServiceMethodData.CallMethodFromRawParams(Object target, IDictionary`2 parameters)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.InvokeMethod(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData, IDictionary`2 rawParams)
en System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.ExecuteWebServiceCall(HttpContext context, WebServiceMethodData methodData)
Is there any way to know the webmethod that raised the error?

I have 10 hyperlink controls. Depending on which hyperlink is pressed I want to pass a value to the target page. I think the easiest way would be to pass the value using URL of the hyperlink controls. Something like <asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" NavigateUrl="~/News.aspx?id=>. I can pass just a value, but I want to pass a value from a variable.
<asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" runat="server"

I need to make the connection string in my vb.net web application be passed into the app externally. This is so I can re-driect the app to use either a test or production database. The same idea as a .INI file in a windows base system. someone suggested to me I use XML but I dont know how to do that.

I am probably totally missing the point here but....
How can I pass a 'var' into another method?
(I am using linq to load XML into an Enumerable list of objects).
I have differernt object types (with different fields), but the final step of my process is the same regardless of which object is being used.
XNamespace xmlns = ScehmaName;
var result = from e in XElement.Load(XMLDocumentLocation).Elements(xmlns + ElementName)
select new Object1
{
Field1 = (string)e.Element(xmlns + "field1"),
Field2 = (string)e.Element(xmlns + "field2")
};
var result2 = Enumerable.Distinct(result);
This code will vary for the different type of XML files that will be processed. But I then want to iterate though the code to check for various issues:
foreach (var w in result2)
{
if (w.CheckIT())
{
//do something
}
}
What I would love is the final step to be in a method in the base class, and I can pass the 'var' varible into it from each child class.
