Saving SelectedValue Of CascadingDropDown In DetailsView Into Database?
Dec 14, 2010
I have a form for our staff to list an event in a calendar system. In the form, there is a DDL for their Department, and a CasscadingDropDown that provides a list of staff members (the staff list is filtered by Department, as chosen in the first DDL). When the form gets submitted, I need to store the selected values of both DDL's (DepartmentID and StaffID, respectively) into the database.
So, I have a DetailsView, and am using the InsertItemTemplate. Now, I can get both DDL's populated correctly (with the cascade working correctly), and I used custom DDL's derived from the standard DDL class to avoid any Postback/EventValidation problems. But I can't seem to get the values of the user's selected items so I can save them back into the database! I've tried many different approaches, but all I seem to get returned is a value of "".
Here's what I have so far...

I followed a tutorial yesterday to implement CascadingDropDown lists but I can't find many examples of how to retrieve their selected value.
Can this only be done using javascript?
Is there any way to access the SelectedValue of the CascadingDropDown lists in the codebehind?
I'm using them in an EditItemTemplate, in a DetailsView, on a master/details page.

I have a cascadingdropdown which works fine using a webservice and is populated. I can save the value of this dropdown to the database buy clicking a save button. However when the page reloads, the list is populated again. Is there a way to keep/set the selectedvalue after postback?

I have two sets of cascading drop down lists they are contained in a detailsview <edititemtemplate>. The problem is that when the user clicks update; the original data is wiped out and the user has to redo the selection of all items contained in a cascading dropdown even if the user didn't want to change that particular aspect of a record. If the user doesn't select everything an error is thrown by the stored procedure in regrds to null values not being valid.
Is there a way i can use cascadingdropdown so that the current values are visible when the user clicks update; meaning that they don't have to redo selections for all items involving drop down lists. The current selections would be default values.

I have three cascading drop down boxes populated by way of a web service. I would like the selection of the third box to then populate the details View based solely on that selection. When I run the page, the DetailsView is populated with every item from the table (using paging) instead of only showing the details of the item selected in drop down. In the database the a field named ItemId is the identity for the table. Am I simply not passing this correctly to the detailsView from the ddl?
Here is an example of what I have so far:
third drop down aspx snippet:

.vb code for dropdown event:

and aspx snippet for details view:

how the dropdown is populated:

GetItems is the following:

I have a standard gridview and detailsview. My detailsview has some fields which are templates, with dropdownlists. The user selects a record in the gridview, then can go down to the detailsview, select Edit, and change some values (using dropdownlists).I am getting the error, "DDL has a selectedvalue which is invalid because it does not exist...." when I click Edit in the detailsview.
I know the problem has something to do with the dropdownlists not being instantiated or bound until I enter Edit mode. Is that right? In what event should I databind my dropdownlists? I've tried several things but could not get it to work. Do I have to loop through all the rows of my details view looking for the dropdownlists, or can I access them directly from some event?

For my project, i have decided to use AjaxControlToolkit's ModalPopup controls. I have obtains codes from this website: [URL] After following all the steps provided by Matt, I am getting some problems when i want to save my edited information. Scenario 1: Select the first item from the gridview, modify the details at the details view and click save, gridview updates and shows the edited information and it is stored into the database.
Scenario 2: Select the second item onwards from the gridview, modify the details at the details view and click save, screen remains at detailsview and edited information is not saved, click cancel button to return to gridview, data at the gridview was not updated. So basically, the update function works only for the first item from the gridview. The following is parts of my code:
<%-- Display list of Activities according to the Project--%>
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UP_ActList" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<ContentTemplate>
<asp:GridView ID="GV_ActList" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False"
DataSourceID="SqlDS_ActList" DataKeyNames="dbID"
OnSelectedIndexChanged="GV_ActList_SelectedIndexChanged">
<RowStyle BackColor="#EFF3FB" />
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="dbID" HeaderText="dbID" Visible="false"
SortExpression="dbID" ReadOnly="true" InsertVisible="False" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ActID" HeaderText="ActID"
SortExpression="ActID" />
.......Other BoundField were deleted for this post purpose............
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:LinkButton ID="LinkB_ViewActDetails" runat="server"
Text="Edit" CommandName="Select" CausesValidation="false"></asp:LinkButton>

I've two RadioButtonLists which pulls "fullName" and displays, the idea is for the user to select from RadioButtonList1 and RadioButtonList2 then submit the data.
If there is already values assigned from sql then there should be a selectedvalue for both controls. But I can't seem to get the controls to assign the selectedvalues.
I've a SqlDataSource, 2 RadioButtonLists and some code binding it:
[Code]....
Also when I go to select just one record from RadioButtonList and submit the data, it returns errors because it sees it as submitting null values.

I have a form which has some dropdownlists (ListItems "Yes" "No"). I use my form to Enter data & submit to database and use same form to Edit aswell. Like I redirect to this form from another page with a QueryString. If there is a QueryString then SELECT * FROM Table WHERE ID = QueryString's value & fill all the controls in the form like
[URL]
I have certain things to do when DropDownList.SelectedValue = "Yes" so I can use SelectedIndexChanged event handler & AutoPostBack="true" when submitting form for the first time. Now when I edit the information(Data filled from table as stated above). How can i automatically fire all events like DropDownlist SelectedIndexChanged in the page_Load iteslef so that all the things that are supposed to be done when DropDownList.SelectedValue = "Yes". I'm posting my test code for reference to explain what I'm trying to do. This is just the Idea. I have something else to deal with if i can get this stright. I need to dynamically add controls based on the values of DropDownList. please suggest some thing guys.

I have a "hello world" database project. A mdf database with 1 table "users", the table has 2 columns userid & username (both varchar(50)). I added a dataset called Database1Dataset.xsd. I drag the table onto it and it creates the "users" datatable. I checked it to see if it created the insert and update commands and it has.
On my form I have 2 buttons, one for read and the other for write/save.
The read button works and I can see the test records in the database;
[Code]....
The second button should add a new record and save it down to the database but this does not work. Somehow the changes are not being commited and saved.

I need to take an uploaded image, resize it, and save it to the database. Simple enough, except I don't have access to save any temp files to the server. I'm taking the image, resizing it as a Bitmap, and need to save it to a database field as the original image type (JPG for example). How can I get the FileBytes() like this, so I can save it to the database?Before I was using ImageUpload.FileBytes() but now that I'm resizing I'm dealing with Images and Bitmaps instead of FileUploads and can't seem find anything that will give me the bytes.

I have two buttons ... one is insert btn another one is fileupload btn.
In the fileupload btn i creat a code in blow. I can upload the file successfully.
I need to insert a file in sql by using insert btn. For that I can create a insert query every thing but I cannot access the string filename value in the insert btn. So how I get the string value for insert btn. I mentioned the insert query also.
protected void UploadButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {
string filePath = FileUploadControl.PostedFile.FileName;
string filename = Path.GetFileName(filePath);
string ext = Path.GetExtension(filename);
string contenttype = String.Empty;
[Code] ....
Insert Btn:
protected void btnInsert_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) {
cmd = new SqlCommand("insert into emp(FileName,ContanType, Data)values(@FileName, @ContanType, @Data)", con);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@FileName", filename);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@ContanType", contenttype); cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Data",bytes);
con.Open(); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
con.Close(); Response.Redirect("Default.aspx");
} }

I am creating a winform app in C# to store formatted text from a rich text box to MySQL database, which can be retrieved back to the rich text box. The database field is a VARCHAR and my code is something similar to below. But I'm getting "file not in correct format" error. Can anyone tell what could be the problem? Is the VARCHAR field okay to store it or should I change it to a BLOB?
string rtfText = this.richTextBox1.Rtf;
// save rtfText to database field as varchar
// ...
// reload rtfText from database as string
this.richTextBox1.Rtf = rtfText;
