Security :: Login Form Rejecting Valid Login With Forms Based Security And Membership Service

Jan 21, 2010

I've set up a system with forms based authentication and using the asp:Login control. When I put in an invalid password I get the approriate invalid password message. However when I put in a valid password, it does nothing...just returns to the login page again. I'm triple checked the login info. There is no error message, and the invalid attempts counter doesn't increment. When I put a break point in the Login_LoggedIn event of the Login form, it hits it, but User.Identity.IsAuthenticated is false. I'm not 100% sure it should be true at this point, as I'm pretty new to .NET but it seems kind of odd.

My user database is stored in a sqlserver 2005 db that already existed. I've added a new connection for it.In the authorization I have

<authorization>deny
users="?"/><authorization>

Security :: .NET Membership Within A Windows Service App?

Jan 5, 2011

I have a web application that uses a SQL database which contains all the standard asp membership tables.Within my Web application I use the standard asp.net membersip logic for adding new users, roles, etc...The point here is I dont use any custom providers for anything.Now on that same machine that is hosting my web application I am writing a Windows service in c# .net.As part of one of the method calls to the windows service application I was curious if I would be able to use any type of membership classes that would connect to my existing database and perform the same functionality as does the ASP.NET membership classes.

Security :: Disable Links Based On Membership?

Aug 25, 2010

I've somehow managed to successfully get Membership working on a test site I'm playing with (learning!). I've reached a point where I can redirect users to another page if they do not have the required level of membership - using the allow feature in a web.config within a folder.What I would like to do now is create a main menu of links (a back office menu visible after the use has logged in), and disable a link if they do not have access to view that page. Is this complex? I'd be grateful for any sample code to get me started.

I need to authenticate users based on three parameters such as username, password and officename instead of just username and password. User name is unique only across the single office and not across the application.

Can I achieve this using Membership class and if yes do I need to write any custom code for that?

Security :: Use Membership Store For User Settings With Windows Authentication

Sep 1, 2010

I am evaluating ASP.NET Membership for an intranet Silverlight app. I want users to be automatically authenticated for my application with their windows logon. Thus I configured Windows Authentication. I would like to store user settings like email-address in using the SqlMembershipProvider and not AD. It seems that storing user settings using the SqlMembershipProvider is not supported with Windows Authentication. Is this really so (using .NET 4)?

If so: What is the rationale behind this? IMHO authentication, user settings and authorization are distinct aspects. User settings could easily be stored (identified by user name) using the SqlMembershipProvider with authentication and password management being supplied by Windows. What is the recommended solution for my scenario?

Security :: Creating A Interface For User Role Management Based On Built In Membership Provider?

Feb 18, 2011

I am creating a interface for User Role Management based on built in membership provider.I want to display all the roles as check boxes for a selected user. I am able to display all the roles in the database, but not able to load the specific user roles. For example, I am able to publish role 1 role 2 role3 role 4 as check boxes. But if the user is already flagged as role 1 and role 3, I am not able to show that data (role1 and 3 should be checked when form loads, but right now, they are not checked)...How do I get the roles as checked boxes display on a page.I am using a repeater control to display roles as check boxes on the page..

Security :: Not Extending MembershipProvider Class And Putting All This Methods In Some Unique Class And Call Its Methods Then?

Sep 16, 2010

I am beginner in web applications development. I started one little project and host it on source forge "https://homoco.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/homoco". And I started implementing authentication in this application to learn how it works. From my experience people never use out of the box things so I want to implement this stuff alone (like in real world projects). So some questions:

1) Is there any reason to use membership out of the box? To use database table schema, stored procedures etc. that tool generate for developer. I think that this lower control over code and I decided to implement it my self. I don't know if I am right.

2) Is my approach in this demo project good or bad (if someone have time I like to do just a little code review)? I created database based on business rules. Not using database schema that membership provider require. Extend "MembershipProvider" class to satisfy my needs. Implement queries to database myself.

3) Now, this question is a little wired but I have to ask it. If we make custom Membership Provider and do sql queries alone, implement all MembershipProvider class methods ourselves, and in application use Membership.blabla() why is this approach different from not extending MembershipProvider class and putting all this methods in some unique class and call its methods then? I hope that someone understand what I ask here.

I am sorry for three questions, but I really trying to find the best way to implement this feature in my demo project like it is a real world application.

AJAX :: Methods Not Working On Windows Server 2008?

Apr 15, 2010

I have created a web aplication in the following environment Visual studio 2008, IIS 5.0 & OS:Windows XP. It is working fine in my local system. But when I host this application on the server some of the AJAX methods are not working.

The server environment: They have installed Microsoft .Net framework 3.5, IIS 7.0 & OS:Vista.

I am using a text box in that application. When a user types any character say 'a' a div will be opened below the text box displaying all the cities starting with the character 'a'.

for example this is code where I have written the Ajax method

[Code]....

I am calling this Ajax method in the source file through javascript, below is the code

[Code]....

The ajax method which was written in the .cs file returns the response.value correctly in my local system.But in the server the Ajax method is not returning the response.value.

WCF / ASMX :: Returning Web Methods As Different Formats Based On Querystring?

Mar 23, 2010

I have some WCF services that I want to return in different formats based on a querystring param. For example, [URL], [URL], [URL], etc... This would make it so that many different types of clients could consume the services whichever way was easiest for them, such as binary for a .NET client and json for an ajax or Flex client.

What I'm thinking is that I can have the WCF web methods return their .NET business objects and not worry about the output mode and then have a behavior that hooks in after returning from the web method which checks the querystring for this param and either:

1. Continues returning the business objects if the mode is dotnet.

2. Converts the business objects to xml if the mode is xml and returns a string of xml.

3. Converts the business objects to json if the mode is json and returns a string of json.

Security :: Getting Windows Username Using Windows Authentication?

Sep 3, 2010

I am developing one intranet website. Being an intranet application, one of the requirement is to have a single sign on feature.

It means that the windows PC username (i.e the "ctrl + alt + delete" username) is going to be the username for the system.

How do i fetch that username?

I tried the following two ways which are working in debug mode but not on live site.

System.Security.Principal.IPrincipal user = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User;
Response.Write(user.Identity.Name);
&
Response.Write(Request.ServerVariables["AUTH_USER"].ToString());

Both the above method works when i run the page from visual studio.

However when i run the page from IIS or any other server, it gives me a blank value
