Security :: How To Implement The Userroles In VS2010 Created Web Application

Jan 30, 2011

I have created a web application through VS2010, with defined tables in the database for username, password, etc.,

As well as in the project, VS2010 created templates,Views, Master pages,etc.,

Now I want to implement the Role based access in my application. For Example, Adminstrator can view all the page, But the user can view only few pages.

I don't know how to try implement the user roles, Since I cant get the value of Username and password since access by this line.

RegisterHyperLink.NavigateUrl =
"Register.aspx?ReturnUrl=" +
HttpUtility.UrlEncode(Request.QueryString["ReturnUrl"]);
//To load the custom page, Change it in the Web.Config File [<authentication mode="Forms">]

My Query:

1. How to implement the uerroles in this application.

2.Client needs the admin intreface to create the user by the adminstrator.How can i provide the from for accessing the tables whaich are created by VS2010, when the web application is created.

Security :: Redirect URL And Forms Authentication (VS2010)?

Jul 12, 2010

We just switched to VS2010 and seems like the forms authentication is behaving differently.

Our setup is that we have a default page (default.aspx) so that if you link to the root folder of the site, rather than a specific page, you get switched to default.aspx.

In addition, we have a working forms authentication system set up so that if you try to go to any of the pages you get redirected to a login.aspx page.

The login page can either redirect you to the forms authentication default page (default.aspx) or to the requested URL.

I'm not the one that configured this originally, but it looks like we are getting the originally requested URL from the authentication redirect, since Page.Request.Url = "http://.../Login.aspx/ReturnURL=<requestedpage>"

The problem is that this is failing to work when the original url is the root folder. In VS2008, <requestedpage> would be "/rootfolder/default.aspx", whereas now (in VS2010) we're getting "/rootfolder/". In other words, the site redirect used to be happening before the authentication check, and now it seems to be happening afterwards.

This is a problem because when we are checking to see if we need to redirect to something other than the default page, we check to see if the return URL is empty or matches the authentication defaultURL (which is also "default.aspx". If it matches, we go straight to the default page. If it doesn't we do some processing and then do the redirect. The extra processing is producing strange results when the browser is redirected to the rootfolder and therefore to the default page.

For now, I'm able to additionally test for Request + "default.aspx" (which resolved to the authenticaiton defaultURL), but this feels clunky and I can see headaches in the future if we ever need to rename default.aspx.

P.S. It has occurred to me that it's possible that something changed in web.config or another setup file when we did our conversion to VS2010. I can't find it, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

To Implement Code Access Security, And URL Based Security Using The Roles & Types?

Apr 24, 2010

[ASP.NET 3.5, FormsAuthentication, SQL Server]

In the Roles table there is Role, and RoleType.

I have 3different roles, 2 of which have sub-roles.

Example

Role----------------------Type

Adminstrator
Subscriber---Basic
Subscriber---Business

I need to implement Code Access Security, and URL based security using the roles & types...

For instance, the (Subscriber/Basic) would need to view a different set of pages, and have different access to things then a (Subscriber/Business).

I think I can handle the Code Access security with a custom attribute, but I am unsure to how enforce a User be apart of 2 roles in the URL Authorization.

I am currently using the web.config to deny/allow access to the directories/pages.

e.g.

/Areas/Admin/web.config

[Code]....

Is it possible to force the user to be apart of 2 roles with this technique?

Stop Debugging Web Application On IIS In VS2010 Takes Long Time?

Jan 3, 2011

Whenever I stop debugging an ASP.NET IIS web application it seems to take very long before VS2010 becomes responsive again (2 or 3 minutes). This happens when I close Internet Explorer 9 (which stops the debugging session), stop debugging in VS (which closes the browser) or when I detach the debugger from the debugging menu (which leaves the browser open).

My CPU time for devenv.exe goes up to 25% during this period of time. I use the professional edition (no intellitrace). Starting without debugging performs ok when I close the browser. I have some add-ins and extensions installed like TestDriven.NET, Resharper, PowerCommands, Productivity Power Tools, VisualSVN,...

Security :: Web.config Isn't Being Created ?

Jan 8, 2011

Within my site structure there is a folder called { Account } where I only want certain users to have access to. At University, my lecturer provided us with the following instructions:

Create new website and delete the default.aspx file in the Solution ExplorerRight click on the website path at the top of the Solution Explorer window and add a new folder. Name the folder Secure.To set up the security, select Website and then ASP.NET configuration.Select the Security link and in the Users column click "Select Authentication Type" and on the page that appears check the "From the Internet" option. Then click the "Done" button.Still in the security section select "Create Access Rules" and then click on the Secure folder and select "Anonymous Users" and "Deny". Then click OK. You can now close down this window.In the Solution Explorer click the "Refresh" button and you should see two web.config files appear.I am following his instructions to the letter, but I am not getting the {web.config } for my { Account } folder ! What am I doing wrong ?

PS. Is a users table in a database redundant in ASP.NET because there is already a user's table with roles built into ASP.NET ?

VS 2010 Opening File In Application That Created It?

Feb 20, 2012

I am working on a web application project to be deployed on an intranet. I need to provide users with the ability to allocate documents to projects so that I can show them a page that lists the documents for a project. When they click on the document I need it to open in the application that created it. Generally, just Word and Excel documents.

So, I've done all the 'Add a Document' stuff and I have a Gridview on the screen that displays the document name (test.doc) and the path (C:UsersFredTest.doc).

I have tried passing the Document Name and Document Path to this function:

Code:
protected void ShowFile(string DocumentName, string DocumentPath)
{
Response.Clear();
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream";
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename="" + DocumentName + """);
Response.TransmitFile(DocumentPath);
Response.End();
}

and, for example, for my Word document it opens - but not before a 'Do you want to Open or Save this file dialog is presented' (unwanted, but not the end of the world) but, when the file opens you can't save it. (Even on my development box).

Is there a simple way of simply opening an Office document from within a .net web application project that just actually opens the document - so it can be edited and saved etc.

Edit: When the word file opens - if I click to save it it shows this as the path to the file:

C:UsersFredAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE57T5D07IATest[4].doc

So, it's not opening the original file at all - it's creating a copy of it. I want users to simply be able to click on a file and open it. If I use 'C:UsersFredTest.doc' as a desktop shortcut - click on it and the file opens - the actual file - you can edit and save it. Why is it so hard to get a Word document to open from within a .net Web Application?
