I wrote an asp.net application that I'm trying to run on a godaddy domain I bought. I need to read a file in a folder that I did not give read access to so that your average user cannot see in the informaion in that folder. I assumed that the asp.net program would have the same credentials as myself because server-side code. Turns out I am wrong. When I go to use the asp.net application it throws an access denied error saying that the ASP.NET user account has to be given permissions to access the folder.
After talking to two different tech support people at godaddy I've come to the realization that they are either dumb or lazy (or a combo of the two).I came across some code that you can put into the web.config file that would allow the asp.net application to impersonate a user, which would work great to use myself as the impersonated user. However it seems that godaddy cannot give me the name of the server that my domain is on (that's understandable) so I don't know what to put in the identity tag to get this to work.
Here is the code I found:
[Code]....
(of course I filled in the username and password with the correct info)
When I went to use it again it threw this error:
System.Web.HttpException: The current identity (PHX3username) does not have write access to 'C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Temporary ASP.NET Files'.

I am trying to send an email from our web server to a gmail account via System.Net.Mail but am failing miserably receiving this error message:
Mailbox name not allowed. The server response was:
that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1) Using this code I am able to send emails to other email addresses on our Outlook email server:
[Code]....
So I know I am capable of sending email to Gmail with port 587 and using the proper credentials of my own Gmail account. That is not the problem.
The problem is I want to be able to have the mail sent from my application from whatever the user puts in the FROM (Email address): text box to a Gmail account. When I use the above code, the address that the email is sent from is my own.
So the question is: Is there any way to configure this to be able to send from an Outlook email server to a Gmail account without having to use my Gmail account to actually do it (using my credientials). Therefore showing the email as sent from whatever the user puts in the txtEmail text box, and having it sent from the Outlook server?
I know my SMTP uses the port 25 for outgoing mail and I am pretty sure that the Gmail settings block port 25 for incoming mail, which makes sense, but what doesnt make sense is I can compose a message in Outlook and send it to a gmail account, but I cannot automate this through my programming, which makes me feel certain its my programming.

I run a simple .aspx website on a Windows Server 2008 machine. There is no impersonation, and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name returns NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE, which it the account which the application pool runs.I tried to test the security of the application and server by removing file permissions to the .aspx files. I was greatly worried when the website continued to run without problem (it should not have been able to read the .aspx files).By turning on file level auditing, I discovered that the .aspx files were being read by the machine$ account (if the machine is called Serv1, then the files would be read by the Serv1$ account, which seems to have access to all files on the local machine). Is this a security breach or is this behaviour by design ?

My feeling says it's not posible but anyway I am curious if there is at least a workaround for accomplish this.Basically I am working at my client site and my machine is not connected to the domain. What I want to do is running a web application locally under a domain account, and using the webdev server. The webapp uses the default authentication, windows authentication that is.I tried using impersonation with domainuser & password but I got the following error Could not create Windows user token from the credentials specified in the config file. Error from the operating system 'Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.I have to mention that the username and the password are correct.

Could anyone provide guidance about the common technique of sending an email to the new user -> new user clicks the link in the email -> and then the account becomes activated and ready for use?
Currently using the CreateUserWizard control in .NET v4 and a Membership db in SQL Server 2008. If I need to do this via custom code and not the CreateUserWizard that's fine. Would be nice to see expert thoughts on this common, enterprise quality, new account validation technique.
The link below outlines a technique for sending a confirmation email but does not include activation:[URL]

I'm running IIS 6.0 on a Windows 2003 server and running an ASP.NET 4 application which connects to an SQL Server 2005 database on another server. I have my Default.aspx page set to Windows authentication with anonymous access disabled.
When I load up the page it asks for a username and password (as expected), I enter my credentials and it comes up with the following error:Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
If I add the following to my web.config file: <identity impersonate="true"/> then I get the following error:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.
And if I add the <identity impersonate> tag set to true and with my username and password included it connects successfully.
I can't leave this in there as I want each user to connect as themselves, so why is the server not using the credentials that I enter when prompted to connect to the database ?

How can we add a web page or a Windows Forms to the Outlook mail so that when I send a mail to a person he/she should be able to enter the data in the controls on the mail form? The user should also have the ability to save the data directly from the mail, instead of opening my web or a Windows application and update the data.

I have an asp.net / C# page which takes a comment, and then emails that comment. Sometimes when the user enters "&" in the comment, the comment is being truncated. So for example if the comment is "test & test" the email only sends out "test ".
I have tried HttpUtility.HtmlEncode - but it looks like the issue is on the outlook side and not on the C# side.

I have a web page, that has lists of documents for a user to look at. I have the page working to allow a user to view any of the documents when they click the link. The only thing that wont work is a document that is .msg format for Outlook emails. I did some research and found that in order to get Outlook to open the document when opening a .msg document, you have to add the MIMEType application/vnd.ms-outlook to the list of MIMETypes that IIS will accept. I gave this a shot but still couldn't get it working.
Then what I tried was to output the MIMEType associated with a .msg when I was Saving the document so I could see what it was using. When I did this I got "application/octet-steam" So then I set the .msg extention to use octet stream. This allowed the document to be open, but used Notepad which then had really messed up formatting because of the email headers etc.
Does anyone know how I might get outlook to open up and show the email when a user clicks to view that document as opposed to Notepad?

I am working on an ASP.NET project where we are updating all of our websites to support Unicode values. In one place, we are allowing users to enter their email address as Unicode. I use the following code snippet to display the "mailto" address hyperlink:
Response.Write("<a href='mailto:" + Server.UrlEncode(email.EmailAddress) + "'>" + email.EmailAddress + "</a>");
When I click on this link, it opens Outlook, but the email address displays as garbage text. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? From what I have heard, currently, email addresses only support ANSII characters, but Unicode characters are coming; That is why we are taking this step.

I have an app that uses impersonation to gain access to a database (on server separate from IIS). The app connects to the database using a trusted connection and seems to be working just fine. However, we get these logon failure events in the security event viewer:
[Code]....
It must have something to do with impersonation because the login failure is for the domain account which my app is impersonating under. But again, the app is working fine so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to stop these logon failures.

a couple weeks ago, my ASP.NET website stopped sending user comments which I implemented by emailing those comments to my email account through Gmail SMTP server [URL]. I opened the project on my development machine and again it fails to send the email after a couple minutes with the following exception message:
Failure sending mail
Unable to read data from the transport connection: net_io_connectionclosed.
I'm using Gmail's SMTP with port 465, and MailClient.EnableSSL = True.
The weird thing is my Office Outlook 2007 is using the same settings and it doesn't have any problems sending mail using the same Gmail account.

I have this in my HTML email to track if someone views the email in say Outlook.
<img src="http://www.example.com/track.ashx?user=3434" />
but this doesn't seem to work.Should I change my headers in the .ashx to server image headers? Can this work using this method?
I emailed myself with an email, other images displayed properly. There was no log in the database for the handler (the handler logs all requests to the db). Calling the URL to the file in the browser logs to the db, so its working.

We are in the process of building ASP.NET windows auth application. Where user need to interact with other internal system using the same single sign on. To interact application DB the system relies on App Pool account, for this we are every time doing the imporsanation to before every DB call. We can not have all useres added to DB, or create an SQL account. Which requires password and user to store in Web Config. We can encrypt it again you encrypt with what and etc ..So we have one windows account wihich same windows account used for our app pool as well.
I would like to know from the team is what is the best way to do the DB connection in this case? What is the implcations if we imporsanate the DB calls based on the app pool account ? Is it a best practice? I have read it creates its own thred and stuff, Do we need to worry ?

I noticed impersonation is turned on by default in MOSS web configs. I tried disabling it but the web app returns an error. So my question, is it possible to disable impersonation in MOSS? If it is possible are there any special considerations I should be aware of?
If you're interested in why I need to do this...I need to have a custom web part (developed with SmartPart) talk to a separate SQL server using the application pool rather than the current user (Kerberos is enabled). If I set the authentication mode to NTLM I get NTAuthority/ANonymous login errors from my SQL connection. If I turn Kerberos on, the currently logged in user's credentials are passed. If I hard code the user id and password in the connection string it seems to ignore it and default to whichever security model is in place (NTLM or Kerberos).
