VS 2008 - How To Datasource Control Like The SqlDataSource Control
May 21, 2010
My ASP.Net 3.5 book just came in and I started reading the chapter on ADO.Net.
In the first portion of the chapter, it kind of hinted that writing code to access data was the old way (ie Creating a connection, command and datareader object and programmically binding the reader/dataset to a control).
It says that you should use one of the Data Source Controls, such as the SqlDataSource Control.
Is it best practice to start using Datasource Control like the the SqlDataSource Control or are these mainly for 'RAD'?
I'm putting the finishing touches on decent size ASP.Net application, I coded the Data Access Layer and I am wondering if I should have used the Data Source Controls but I always associated them with Rapid Application Development.

I have a Reportviewer with Objectdatasource as default datasource.
However I want the report to have a datasource with parameter depending on the label.text value so sqldatasource is ideal for this. However I dunno how to set the reportviewer datasource as sqldatasource control.

I have a sqldatasource control that I want to get the field values from as it is selecting. Is there any way to do this in the dsControl_Selecting event for each record without binding it to any control or formview? I would like to call dsControl.DataBind and retrieve the field values.

When I drag and drop an SQLDataSource control to my new web page it disappears after I set it up.
It exists in Source but I can't see it in Design. I'm doing the same thing I would do in VS 2005 and I can see the control in design view.
Why can't I see the control? I'm new to VS 2008 and .Net 3.5.

I use the sqldatasource control a lot with stored procedures. But this time I'm using some code I found online where I am defining the new sqldatasource in the code and using it. You can see this below. I am getting a NullReferenceException on the first SelectParameters line and not sure why. Do I need to add the parameters different?
Code:
Dim SqlDataSource As New System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource()
SqlDataSource.ConnectionString = ConnectionString
SqlDataSource.SelectCommand = "MySprocName"
SqlDataSource.SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.StoredProcedure
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("Distance").DefaultValue = 25
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("ZipCode").DefaultValue = "31410"
Dim arg As New DataSourceSelectArguments()
Dim dv As System.Data.DataView = DirectCast(SqlDataSource.[Select](arg), System.Data.DataView)

what is the disadvantages of using SqlDataSource Control? apart from flexibility and more control on the retrieved data ;why most of the web developer prefer using code behind (db connection) instead of SqlDataSource Control?

I know this sounds odd. I have a SQL DB that I am pulling data from. I have to some math functions to get a percentage. So I am pulling all the data in my code and building a data table with the results. I am then trying to pass this into a chart control that I have, but it fails because the data source is not correct for the chart control. I know that the chart control will accept a SQLDataSource control as a data source because a built a example with it before using it in my project.So my question is how can I use the Data Table as a data source for a SQLDataSource Control? Or is there a way I can pull the data from my DB andapply the math needed in a stored procedure or something similar that I could create the procedure on my SQL server then add a SQLDataSource control to my page and use the stored procedure as the source for the SQLDataSource Control.

I have an user control placed on a content page. The content correctly receives the session variables. In the user control I have the following
1. The pageload fires and the text box is correctly set.
<script runat="server">
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (Session["app_id"] != null)
{
txtAppId.Text = Session["app_id"].ToString();
}
</script>
2. I have datagrid in the usercontrol which has a binding variable tied to a control parameters as follows
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceMain" runat="server"
ConnectionString="Myconnectionstring"
ProviderName="MyProvider" SelectCommand="select
last_name,first_name
from applications
where (id = to_number(:pAppId))">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:controlparameter name="pAppId" controlid="txtAppId" propertyname="Text" />
</SelectParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:controlparameter name="pAppId" controlID="txtAppId" propertyname="Text"
Direction="InputOutput" Type="Int32" ConvertEmptyStringToNull="True" />
I tried the following, same error
</SelectParameters>
<asp:SessionParameter
ConvertEmptyStringToNull="True"
DefaultValue="0"
Direction=" InputOutput "
Name="pAppId"
SessionField="app_id"
Size="integer"
Type="String" />
</asp:SqlDataSource>
For some reason the select parameter pAddId is getting set to null and get the following error when the content page is loaded If I hard code the value it works RA-01036: illegal variable name/number Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. I have a simple .aspx page.
I want to show the data either in Chart control or Gridview control. When the user selects an option to see the data either in chart control or grid view control, that specific control has to show up and other control has to become invisible.
So far, I am able to populate data successfully in the chart control. If the user chooses "Grid view" option, how can I show the data in grid view control in the same location. I don't want the gridview control to be shown in a pop up window or any other window.

I have the need to display a date in this format: dd/mm/yyyy. This is actually being stored in an ASP.NET textbox and being used as a control parameter for a select on the GridView. When the query is run, though, the date format should change to 'd M y' (for Oracle). It is not working. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Right now I am pushing the "new" format to a invisible label and using the label as my control param:
$(document).ready(function() {
//datepicker for query, shown traditionally but holding an Oracle-needed format
$('[id$=txtBeginDate]').datepicker({ minDate: -7 , altFormat: 'd M y' });
//get alt format
var altFormat = $('[id$=txtBeginDate]').datepicker("option", "altFormat");
//set date to be altformat
$('[id$=lblActualDate]').datepicker("option", "altFormat", 'd M y');
});

I have a SQLDataSource control that is calling a database stored procedure, and passing quite a large number of paramaters, and the stored proc returns records that populates a gridview control. When I walk through the code behind to determine the values being passed, is there any way that I can see exactly how the parameters are being formated and passed to the stored proc?

I am using SqlDataSource to run a stored procedure. I am passing 3 values to the SP. The first and second come from a listbox and the third parameter should be passed as a data. All the data picker controls I found either dont allow EnablePostBack or do not work with the SqlDataSource. (I am not able to list the control under "Command and Parameter Editor").
Since I am a beginner that is the only way I know how to call the database and pass parameter values from my controls.
Any date picker our there which will pass the data back to the SqlDataSource when clicked on?
