ADO.NET :: Can Get A Value Or Null From An Entity Query

Mar 28, 2011

Dim p = From i In context.persons
Order By i.fileNum
Select i.ID, i.fileNum, i.firstName, i.lastName, i.state, i.prPenPals.FirstOrDefault.startProfile, i.prPenPals.FirstOrDefault.endProfile

where for every person, prPenPal can have exactly one or zero records? I can do the above, but when I try to use p as the datasource of a ListView I get The cast to value type 'DateTime' failed because the materialized value is null. Either the result type's generic parameter or the query must use a nullable type.
I tried using

Select i.inmateID, i.fileNum, i.firstName, i.lastName, i.state, i.prLegals.FirstOrDefault.startProfile.ToString,
i.prLegals.FirstOrDefault.endProfile.ToString

but that didn't work. I got a blue squiggly line "Range variable name cannot match the name of a member of the 'Object' class" error I want the date if the record exists, and Null or Nothing if it dosen't.

C# - ADO.NET Entity Framework Quirk - Statement Always Returns Null

Jan 21, 2010

When I run the code below, it works

int charId = int.Parse(Request.Params["charId"]);
EveFPT ctx = new EveFPT();
var theCharQuery = from a in ctx.tblChars
where a.id == charId
select new
{
Name = a.name,
CorpName = a.tblCorps.name,
AllianceName = a.tblCorps.tblAlliances.name
};
if(theCharQuery.Count() == 1)
{
var theChar = theCharQuery.First();
lblCharName.Text = theChar.Name;
lblCorpName.Text = theChar.CorpName;
lblAllianceName.Text = theChar.AllianceName;
}

However, If I the below

var theCharQuery = from a in ctx.tblChars
where a.id == charId
select a;
if(theCharQuery.Count() == 1)
{
tblChars theChar = theCharQuery.First();
lblCharName.Text = theChar.name;
lblCorpName.Text = theChar.tblCorps.name;
lblAllianceName.Text = theChar.tblCorps.tblAlliances.name;
}

the statement theChar.tblCorps always returns null.

C# - NULL Values In Object Properties In Entity Framework?

Feb 12, 2010

Tables: Article, Author, Comment (1 article and 1 author can have * comments)In the database is 1 article, 1 author and 1 comment.

The problem is, that code

myBD my_bd = new myBD();
var articles = by_bd.Article;

works OK, I can see that an Author and an Article has 1 comment. But that code

var comm = (from u in my_bd.Comment
where ......
select u);

returns the comment but it has NULL values in property Article and Author. Why ?

SQL Server :: How To Set A Optional Parameter To NULL

Oct 29, 2010

I have got a problem about setting the optional parameter to NULL in sql sp. Initially I set all the parameters null in the sql sp. That's OK. But I would like to set the parameters to Null again if a particular parameter has a value of - 1 by using the "IF ELSE" statement block. However, the problem was that I was unable to set the parameter to NULL in the IF ELSE statement. So please correct my IF ELSE statement in the store procedure. This is really urgent and important for my project.

How To Prevent Crashes When Parameter Is Null

Feb 18, 2010

i am inserting the value of dynamic controls into the db like so;

Dim ae1 As DropDownList = FindControl("AreasExpertise1")
If (ae1 IsNot Nothing) Then
x.Parameters.AddWithValue("@areasexpertise1", ae1.SelectedValue)
End If

then in my query i have parameters like so;

INSERT INTO [foo] ([etc], [etc], [etc], [areasexpertise1], [areasexpertise2])
VALUES (@etc, @etc, @etc, @areasexpertise1, @areasexpertise2)

When the user fills out the form, they see only areasexpertise1 and have to press a button to dynamically insert another area of expertise...If they only have 1 area of expertise, the query crashes and says 'must declare variable @areasexpertise2.Please can you tell me a way to either insert nulls when the parameters are empty, or to ignore them?

Unable To Display/write Specific Html If Model / Entity Is Null

Jun 28, 2010

Normally I work in ASP Classic, and am still a bit green on ASP.Net MVC.

I have my model with its fields or entities (might not be the right word hence why not able to find if previously answered, forgive me), and some of these will have null values such as hyperlinks, email address, specific types of phone numbers, etc.

What I want to do is not write certain blocks of HTML within the foreach loop if a field is empty.

In ASP Classic, I would have written an If statement along the lines of:

<% If RS.field <> NULL then %>HTML with <%=RS.field %><% End If %>
<% If RS.field2 <> NULL then %>HTML with <%=RS.field2 %><% End If %>
...

However, I don't know how to achieve the same result in ASP.Net MVC.In one of my current usages, a list of sellers returned for a specific set of search results, it runs through a foreach loop and returns the current HTML (in part):

Website: <a class="url" href="<%= seller.ContactWebsite %>" target="_blank" title="Visit the website for <%= seller.Name %>"><%= seller.ContactWebsite %></a><br />

So, if for example I have a field from the model, say seller.ContactWebsite, and this field was NULL, I would not want it to write this as part of the foreach loop.

Getting Null Parameter Value In Controller When MVC Route Fires?

Jan 12, 2011

I'm using a custom route to create the following URL (http://mysite/subscriber/12345) where 12345 is the subscriber number. I want it to run the ShowAll action in the Subscriber controller. My route is firing and using Phil's route debugger, when I pass in the above url, the route debugger shows ID as 12345.

My controller is accepting an int as subscriberID. When it fires, the controller throws the error "The parameters dictionary contains a null entry for parameter 'id' of non-nullable type 'System.Int32". Why does the route debugger show a value and the controller doesn't see it?

Here's my route (first one is the culprit)

routes.MapRoute(
"SubscriberAll",
"subscriber/{id}",
new { controller = "Subscriber", action = "ShowAll", id=0 },
new { id = @"d+" } //confirm numeric
);
routes.MapRoute(
"Default", // Route name
"{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters
new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } // Parameter defaults
);

I'm getting a null in the ShowAll action? Here is the action method signature:

public ActionResult ShowAll(int id)
