Visual Studio :: How To Import Existing Webite
Feb 1, 2011
I have a .NET 2.0 website that was created for us by an outside company.
I don't want to change the current structure, but would like to start adding new items via VS.
What is the best route? creating new items in VS2005 and putting them into the structure, or getting the site uploaded into VS to create new items.

I am updating/extending a site I originally created in Visual Studio 2005. My new site I am starting in 2010. If I select add exiting item to project I notice a number of differences.
1. CodeFile has been replaced by CodeBehind (without changing this, any code goes in script on the aspx page, not the .cs file. Why?
2. There is a file called filename.designer.cs created with new pages that my imported pages do not have. What is the purpose of this file and is it required and/or how can it be constructed from imported content?

I know you can add an existing item(s), but is there a way to add an Existing folder (and contents) to a project? It sucks without this option. I need to add a folder that has many folders and a lot of content.

I am trying to open an existing asp.net app. on my local machine with VS2008. The app. resides in a folder on the Windows 2003 Server. The app. runs on our intranet. Recently, a change was made to the app. directly by opening one of the files in the solution and adding maybe a couple of lines of c# code and saved back. Of course this would not make a difference as its not been re-compiled.
I copied the whole folder where the app. resides on the server to my desktop and then tried to open the solution with VS2008, it came up with a prompt saying the app was written using a previous version of Visual Studio and needed to be converted to VS2008 format, I followed the intructions, but it failed saying something like "...failed to make a backup etc", it wouldn't open the solution.I have successfully open other apps this way but this one particular one would not just open. All I want to do is to use VS2008 to recompile and publish back to the server. I have tried using VS2005, it just says the app. was created by a newer version of the application...
I think the app was built sometime btw 2004 - 2008. Also, if it is relevant, the folder where the app. resides on the server has a globe icon, don't know if its an IIS thingIs there any other way to compile this .net app. without using VS2008,

We are using VS Ultimate. One developer has created a solution (xyz) which is displayed in Team Explorer and Source Control Explorer. I want to create a local Solution using his existing Solution. How can I do this? I started with File/New Project. I gave it a name and it now displays in Solution Explorer as 'Solution 'xyz_solution' (0 Projects). Already existing in Source Control is a folder named 'xyz Solution'. I want to populate my solution with this?

I have a website which created first by Visual Studio 2005, then I convert in to Visual Studio 2008 and currently using Visual Studio 2008. After Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, HTML 5 and CSS 3 seem to be available. I want to convert my website to a VS 2010 website which uses HTML5.
How can this be done?
Is it possible to convert it to an ASP.NET Web Application while I'm porting it from VS2008 to Visual Studio 2010 ?
I know how to convert a website to web application in Visual Studio 2008 but I haven't used Visual Studio 2010 and have no idea about the differences.

I'm left maintaining a proprietary codebase from a third-party vendor. The vendor is still sort of around, but support is limp. The site is ASP.NET.I have made some changes but I am having a really hard time getting IIS to compile these changes in. The bin/ directory has what I believe is a precompiled dll for the core classes. I've changed these but it doesn't recompile. I have tried deleting the dll but then the app refuses to build saying that the Global.asax can't inherit the type anymore, so I don't really know how to rebuild with changes.

I have been asked to take over and modify an existing dynamic web site made with vb and asp 3.5 on a shared hosting enviroment. The original programmer left and I have no access to the original documentation of the site, if any. Nevertheless, I have complete access to the web server and database server.
How can I import the existing wen site into Visual Studio and recreate the development enviroment.
I'm new to asp.net, but U have prior experience with VB and asp web development.

I am working on Vs2005 and asp.net 2.0. I have a solution with 4 projects (business object, components, data access, webclient)When I change any existing method or property in Business object or data access, it is not reflecting in the application. I have deleted the existing references to the project and added them after the new build. I always get errors like "method not found or No overload method "It seems like old verion of dll is still there in the reference.

So, i am running SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and VWD 2010 Express on Windows 7. I am logged in as admin on my machine. I have created a new web app project (VB Linq to SQL) and I have attempted to add an existing .mdf to my project's App_Data folder. I right-click, choose "add existing...", navigate to the .mdf file in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10.SQLEXPRESSMSSQLDATA folder, and then i get an "Access is denied" error box with no further details.

I just recently upgrade my asp.net web project from visual studio 2005 to visual studio 2010. The upgrade was successful with no problems however im missing some features with this project. The One Click Publish feature(which is greyed out) in the header area of Visual Studio 2010 and the Add Config Transforms feature which is no where to be seen when you right click on web.config. When i create a new web project straight from visual studio 2010, these options work fine.

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 locked up, and when I tried to restart it, it wouldn't load, so I did a devenv.exe /resetuserdata to get it going again. It reset everyhing in my options of the web app/ etc, and now some AJAX conrols don't work such as dragpanel. I assume that it is because something got reset that I haven't enabled again, but can't figure it out.

can Visual Studio 2008 be All-In-One tool to integrate source code continuously from team members, build, unit test?
Having used Visual Studio Team Edition 2005, unit testing each method within VS itself. I strongly believe that it is feasible to add-on tools. Example ankhsvn tool to use SVN from Visual studio [URL]
In my investigating i have come across number of tools(shown below) to use with Visual Studio 2008 professional
Development tool:- Visual Studio 2008 professional using Subversion as source control tool. Continuous Integration:- Hudson or Cruise control Build tool:- NAnt Testing:- NUnit, Selinium As Visual Studio 2008 can be used for unit testing I think NUnit is out of consideration.
In the same way i would like to have any other tools/add-ons to Visual studio to implement continuous integration, building and unit testing. This process should be automated such a way source code between team members is continuously integrated, built and unit testing is done as configured.
Objective is to use few number of tools as add-on to Visual Studio or achieve most from Visual studio itself (example unit testing). Visual Studio should be all in one tool.
I am aware that Team Foundation Server best suits my requirement, but it is out of scope due to its cost.
