WCF / ASMX :: Web Service Determine Details About Its Consumer

Apr 6, 2010

Is there a way to get information about the web site or application that is consuming the Web Service. I would like to determine the details of an application from within my Web Service when it is consumed. The information would be like that in the assemblyInfo of the caller, application name, version etc. Getting the user seems to be easy enough but not details about the application or web site.

SAML: Communication Between Service Providers?

Oct 25, 2010

I've been tasked with writing a SP (Service Provider) for SAML v2.0 in ASP.NET, and I wonder the following;If a user logs in on the main SP for a service (where my SP becomes accessible for a user as an anchor/link, unless previously bookmarked), and then requests access to my SP, how should I handle their login?

They will have logged in and become authorized by the IdP on the main SP, but how will that SP tell my SP that the user is logged in? Will I have to send a new authorization request to the IdP to determine whether the user is logged in or should it be passed on as post data/redirect with a query string from the SP? I've read the technical overview as well as the basics, but they don't cover this part. I will contact the main SP and ask how to proceed, but I wanted to cover my bases first and see if there's a standard way on how to deal with this situation.

WCF / ASMX :: Redirect Response In Web Service?

Aug 3, 2010

I read that webservices are basically used in backgroung. It can't be use for redirecting to some other url. Then what is meaning of following code which is from msdn. I am not able to implement this code.

Redirection If you need to provide a redirect response in your Web service, do not use the Context.Response.Redirect method because the HTTP response will differ from what the Basic Profile mandates. [R1130]

The following example shows how to give a redirect response that complies with the Basic Profile:

[WebMethod]public string HelloWorld(){ Context.Response.StatusCode = 307; Context.Response.AddHeader("Location","<redirect URL>"); return null;}

Custom SOAP Response Of ASMX Service

Feb 13, 2011

I'm trying to implement a custom SOAP response of the legacy web service. At the moment it has the following format:

<ServiceResponse>
<ServiceResult>some return value</ServiceResult>
</ServiceResponse>

I need to add string value like this:

<ServiceResponse>NEW VALUE
<ServiceResult>some return value</ServiceResult>
</ServiceResponse>

I'm not sure if it is a good idea at all? Is this SOAP xml valid? If yes, how it can be accomplished?

WCF / ASMX :: Web Service Latency / How To Measure The latency(response Round Trip Time) For a Web Service

Jun 17, 2010

I am writing a program to measure the latency(response round trip time) for a web service. I need to have this at client side.

My initial plan is to store the time at which request is sent and then calculate the difference in time when we recieve a response from the web service. Is this the correct way to measure latency of web service. This has some overhead because of storing time and all. How can this be done?

Another option is to attach a timestamp with the SOAP request. But the server should return the timestamp. This will not be possible in case of third party web services.

WCF / ASMX :: Connecting To Web Service Via Http Post?

Jul 22, 2010

My web service uses .Net Framework 2.0. An e-learning application reads and updates an Access database in the web service via Http Post commands. I test the e-learning application and the web service using the version of IIS 7 that came with Windows Vista. I run IIS using localhost in my browser.

All works well. But a friend is having trouble running the same test with my files on her IIS 6 server. So I'm developing a checklist of issues in setting up an IIS 6 server to run a web service. I plan to include all possible causes of problems including permissions, accounts that are needed, etc. Are there resources to which I can go for this checklist?

Using Both Post And GetAjax Calls For The Same WebMethod In ASMX Web Service

Jan 20, 2010

I can't seem to call a web service method from Ajax with both POST and GET.

Initially only the POST would work and GET would causes this error:

{"Message":"An attempt was made to call the method u0027getDatau0027 using a GET request, which is not allowed.","StackTrace":" at System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.GetRawParams(WebServiceMethodData methodData, HttpContext context)at System.Web.Script.Services.RestHandler.ExecuteWebServiceCall(HttpContext
context, WebServiceMethodData methodData)","ExceptionType":"System.InvalidOperationException"}

I fixed that by adding this attribute: [ScriptMethod(UseHttpGet=true)] but now GET causes this error:

[code]....

So is it true that you can only use either POST or GET and not both from Ajax?

WCF / ASMX :: Maintaining Backward Compatibility When Adding To The Service Response?

Jan 7, 2011

We have a web-service written in .net v2 which has two simple methods, Request and RequestTyped. The first of these items return a structured XML document which may include error information. The second of these methods returns and object which contain the node information of the first, but in a typed format? This service has several hundred clients and has been operational for some time.

I was wondering what the implications would be to adding an additional node to the response of both methods. Obviously the object returned by the second of these two methods will also now include this data as an additional property. What are the implications for our clients?

1)Will the additional node returned by the first method be ignored by those consuming the services that have not refreshed their WSDL?

2)Will the additional property returned by the object in the typed method break existing models which have not refreshed the WSDL?

Display Post Data From Vb.net Application To Web Service Asmx That Is Located On Server

Jan 14, 2010

I am trying to post data from vb.net application to web service asmx that is located on server! For posting data from vb.net application I am using this code:

Public Function Post(ByVal url As String, ByVal data As String) As String
Dim vystup As String = Nothing
Try
'Our postvars
Dim buffer As Byte() = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(data)
'Initialisation, we use localhost, change if appliable
Dim WebReq As HttpWebRequest = DirectCast(WebRequest.Create(url), HttpWebRequest)
'Our method is post, otherwise the buffer (postvars) would be useless
WebReq.Method = "POST"
'We use form contentType, for the postvars.
WebReq.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"
'The length of the buffer (postvars) is used as contentlength.
WebReq.ContentLength = buffer.Length
'We open a stream for writing the postvars
Dim PostData As Stream = WebReq.GetRequestStream()
'Now we write, and afterwards, we close. Closing is always important!
PostData.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)
PostData.Close()
'Get the response handle, we have no true response yet!
Dim WebResp As HttpWebResponse = DirectCast(WebReq.GetResponse(), HttpWebResponse)
'Let's show some information about the response
Console.WriteLine(WebResp.StatusCode)
Console.WriteLine(WebResp.Server)
'Now, we read the response (the string), and output it.
Dim Answer As Stream = WebResp.GetResponseStream()
Dim _Answer As New StreamReader(Answer)
'Congratulations, you just requested your first POST page, you
'can now start logging into most login forms, with your application
'Or other examples.
vystup = _Answer.ReadToEnd()
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)
End Try
Return vystup.Trim() & vbLf
End Function

Web Forms :: Post Form To Web Service And Parse XML

Jan 10, 2011

Hope this is the right forum to ask. I am trying to write a simple mobile application with two form fields that POST to a webservice that queries an SQL database and comes back with an XML file that needs to be parsed and displayed
properly in a browser.

So what I have is a webservice .asmx file that is working properly and an HTML form that POST two variables to the webservice file. The result is the generated XML. I simply just need to know the simplest way to display parts of that data as output within the
design of the form page.

Here is the HTML form: http://www.bt4u.org/
And here is the web service: http://www.bt4u.org/BT4U/BT4U_WebService.asmx

If you enter in the following respectively you will see the XML file:

MSS-1607
HWD-2104

there is some sort of class that stores the XML in an array or some such thing that can then be manipulated

Getting Value Of HTML Select Element On Form Post?

Mar 29, 2010

I have a View that has a select drop-down list and an edit button within a form. What I want to do is have the user select one of the options from the select element, click on the edit button, and get the value of the selected option in the Controller method.

I created my form with <% Html.BeginForm(): %>

and the Controller "Edit" method should be called.

I looked through several online examples, but each one focused on how to set values and the default selected value of the select element, rather than retrieving it from the code in the Controller method. I tried grabbing it from the Request.Form collection like:

string val = Request.Form["myDropDownList"].ToString();
and also:
string val = Request.Form["myDropDownList"];

Obviously I didn't do this correctly, because I get a null reference exception. Does anyone have the solution to this issue?

WCF / ASMX :: Access/pass Parameters To A Web Service WITHOUT A (general) Form?

May 15, 2010

I am a newbie to ASP.NET (but not to C#)I have a project I am developing that may seem unconventional at this point but it is a project that I hope to eventually expand and provide a new type of service on the internet. Currently the project makes use of an Excel spreadsheet that is generated by another application I wrote. Basically the spreadsheet is an index to a specific type of file that exists on a host computer and the files are directly linked from within the excel document. When the link is clicked it opens the file using the operating system default program which then processes the file (this takes some time).

This is fine and dandy but when I click on another file, the default program immediately stops processing one file and opens the latest submission and thus interrupting the previous job. To prevent this I am now writing a queuing application. Here is where ASP.NET comes in. I do not want the link to open the queuing application with the file to add into the queue as a parameter because that pops one or more nnoying/scary "you are opening an executable" dialogs and because I want to be able to access the queuing service from a remote computer, and possibily in the future over the web. Instead I am trying to use an ASP.NET service application that will accept the name of a file as a parameter, access the external queue class (defined in an external dll of which only one universal instance is allowed), and add the request to the queue. Whether or not the table is an excel table or on a web page, using a form in this instance is tedious, not only for me but for a user. I want the user to be able to simply click on an html link and have the file be queued without anything except maybe a confirmation page pop up saying that the file has been queued and it will take x amount of time before the file is finished processing.

My problem is I cannot for the life of me find a way to do this. I have searched the interenet for over a week now looking for a way to call a "WebMethod" using a link and I am getting the impression that it cannot be done. Even when I use a form and try to have the form pass a string (representing the file name) as its "action" it comes up with an application error saying that I am missing the parameter I am trying to pass. Here are some examples of what I have tried:Here an example method I would try to access:

[Code]....

Here is an example of how I tried to access directly by way of a link (which results in an application error: InvalidOperationException)"

[Code]....
