Web Forms :: Getting Next ID Number From Database?
May 23, 2012
I want to display the next ID (Identity seed) number that's in the database in a label on my form.
Is there a way I can do something on page load to get max(CareID) + 1 to display in label2.text when the page loads?
I want the next number to be displayed in this label:
MRID: <asp:Label ID="Label2" runat="server" Text=""></asp:Label>

I have a SQL database with a table storing three collums. ClientID, StartRange, EndRange.The user needs to add records to a different table - the number being inputted by the user eeds to fall in the range where it is equal to the client he is adding if for. There can be a number of different ranges for a client which where I am falling over, it would be easier if it was just the one range!What is the best way to check this- I was thinking a customer validator method in the code behind?Would I need a Stored Proceedure? or some DataSet Tables and some how parse the ranges?

The following code gives error: "When casting from a number, the value must be a number less than infinity."
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="DATE" SortExpression="date1">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1" runat="server"
SelectedDate='<%# Bind("date1") %>' VisibleDate='<%# Eval("date1") %>'>
</asp:Calendar>
</ItemTemplate>
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox ID="Date1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("date1") %>'></asp:TextBox>
</EditItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
The error occurs at the line <asp:Calendar ID="Calendar1"...>
It errors because there are records with null value for date1 when the records are returned from the database.
Is there a way to specify in the .aspx file telling it to ignore null or display null/blank?

I am trying to determine if I have a database connection leak. So I need to see the number of open connections. I have some simple test code that creates a leak:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
for(int i = 0; i < 100; i++)
{
SqlConnection sql = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=.SQLExpress;UID=sa;PWD=fjg^%kls;Initial Catalog=ABC");
sql.Open();
}
}
Note there is no .Close and this does infact crash after being run 3 times in quick succession.
In order to measure the leak I am running the Performance monitor and measuring SQLServer: General Statistics/User Connections:
However, these seem to be zero when I run my code:
What should I change to actually see the connections?
ANSWER
I have approved an answer below. Even though it doesn't use the performance tools, its good enough for my use. Bottom line is I wanted to see how many connections remain open after opening a web page and this did the trick.

I want to be able to use a gridview in asp.net 2.0 that is bound to a datasource. That's no problem. The first column in the gridview is a manufacturer part number. This data is going to be a link. When the user hovers over the link I want to have a tooltip immediately show up in the form of a bubble or balloon tooltip. The tooltip widow should point to another page that loads the detail information from the database for that part number.

How could I get the total number of records present in a database table through asp.net in VB? I know about setting up and opening a connection. I wanted to loop through records, so wanted to know the number of records present. How could that be done?
Also, I used statements like 'Update' and 'Insert Into' to to change the data in my data source. Like I updated a certain field like this:
ds.Tables("tblUsers").Rows(2)(3) = "xyzzzz"
and then I executed an sql statement on the same field like this:
objCmd.UpdateCommand = new OleDbCommand
objCmd.UpdateCommand.CommandText = "Update tblUsers " & _
"SET City='xyzzzz' WHERE UserID=3"
objCmd.UpdateCommand.Connection = Conn
objcmd.update(ds,"tblusers")
where objcmd is an instance of oledbdataadapter object)
What should I do to delete a record or a field in a data source through asp.net?

I am generating a unique Ref number using this sql statement: SELECT REPLACE(STR(CAST(CAST(NEWID() AS binary(5)) AS bigint),12),0,0) as REF Subsequently, I need to insert this REF into sql database table in stored procedure. Here is what I did in my stored procedure:
USE [iBankRecords]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[stp_addPayee] Script Date: 07/05/2010 21:57:07 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER PROC [dbo].[stp_addPayee]
(
@CUSTID char(10),
@PAYEEACCNUM nvarchar(20),
@PAYEEACCTYPE char(10) ,
@PAYEENAME char(20),
@PAYERINITIAL char(20),
)
AS
DECLARE
@ReturnValue int
INSERT INTO PAYEE (CUSTID, PAYEEACCNUM,PAYEEACCTYPE,PAYEENAME,PAYERINITIAL, REF)
VALUES (@CUSTID,@PAYEEACCNUM,@PAYEEACCTYPE,@PAYEENAME,@PAYERINITIAL, REF)
IF @@ERROR<>0
BEGIN
PRINT 'ERROR'
SET @ReturnValue=1
RETURN @RETURNVALUE
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @ReturnValue=0
RETURN @RETURNVALUE
END
May I know how do I have generating a unique ref num and inserting the REF into the above statement?

I have executed my query in VB with:
[Code]....
I now want to count the number of returned rows so that I can say:IF rows_returned = 1 then login else deny
I think you get the idea.P.S. I know this is not the most secure method of login but I do not want to use the ASP.NET configuration manager as I like to understand what is happening. I am starting off very simple and I shall work up from there.

If I want to be able to have a table Consultant, which is the user and their personal information, and I want this user to be able to select their proficiency in a number of Programs (software) on a scale from 0-5 (zero being no experience whatsoever), how do I do this best?
I mean I could have a Consultant table with a one-to-many relationship to a Program table, and then have all the limited Programs availalbe loaded by an XML file or something, and for each Consultant associate all the Programs and their Levels of proficiency. But that seems very wrong and inefficient.
It seems to me I should have a table with all the (limited number of) Programs, and then by some sort of association between the two by Ids. But I can't get my head around how to do this. I'm thinking many-to-many... But first, is this correct? Secondly, how do I do this in an Entity Framework Model? I usually create my database code first, i.e. create the EF model, and then generate database from model. Will I get a junction table where I can add the Level field, because basically a Consultant HAS A Program with a Level, or actually a list of Programs each with a Level.

In our application, we store the most number of users online. We do this by tracking what page each user is on currently and upon login, delete users who have been inactive for X minutes and then take a count of the users online, overwriting the most number online if this is higher.
How can we change this to track the number of users online over a time period, so we can look at a line graph of the number of users online. I guess we'll need a cron to run every 1/2/5/10/20/30/60 minutes to track the number online? Then how would be store this data, the table would get very large. I would think the likes of Statcounter/Analytics would have a better way of storing this data.

I have a web user control with DataList control in it. In my .aspx page, I have a report header, an empty panel as a place holder, a report footer.In my .aspx.vb file, I'll loop through a list of departments. Within each department, I'll load a label to display the department name and the user control for the data, and add both the label and user control to the panel. So there are two variables:
the number of departments and the number of records in a user control.
Now I need to display the current page number and the total page number in the report footer. Is it doable? How? I'm thinking of this approach: declare a page variable count, count the number of department name labels and the number of records in a user control. When the total count reaches a number, such as 20, I'll break the page. This way, I can get the the page current number and the total number of pages. But how to add a page break to an asp.net page?

I have been trying to figure out how to use <asp:requiredfieldvalidator> with ValidationExpression but am having a difficult time understanding the syntax of ValidationExpression. I'd like to make sure one textbox's number (1-12) is equal to or higher than the other textbox's (1-12) number. How is this accomplished and what's the syntax of ValidationExpression (hopefully I'm stating the question correctly).
