Why Use Reference Of Abstract Class To Create Object

Jul 22, 2010

Why do we use the reference of abstract class (or base class) to create object of it's sub-class. eg: TextWriter is the abstract class for StreamWriter & StreamWriter.

TextWriter writer = new StreamWriter();

why can't we simply use :

StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter();

Create Slim Version Of Large Object / Class

Jan 1, 2010

I have a product class which contains 11 public fields.

The number of fields may grow with attributes for more specific product tyes. The description may contain a large amount of data. I want to create a slim version of this product class that only contains the data needed. I'm only displaying 4 of the 12 fields when listing products on a category page. It seems like a waste to retrieve all of the data when most of it isn't being used. I created a parent class of ProductListing that contains the 4 fields I need for the category page

Then created a class of Product that inherits from ProductListing containing all product data. It seems backwards as "ProductListing" is not a kind of "Product" but I just started reading about inheritance a few months ago so it's stil a little new to me. Is there a better way to get a slim object so I'm not pulling data I don't need? Is the solution I have in place fine how it is?

ADO.NET :: Unable To Create Object Variable For Linq Data Class?

Sep 23, 2010

For some unknown reason I suddenly am unable to create an object variable for a Linq Data Class. If I create a new project and try the process again with the same database everything works as advertized.The code I am using is Dim db As New RoggDataContext which gives me an error on the object variable "db": Overload resolution failed because no accessibility 'NEW' accepts this number of arguments.I have looked inside every file in the Web Project like the web config to check the connection string, gobal, and designer.vb looking for any errors whit no JOY. I also tried to create a new form and code behind with a button and received the same error.This is mind blowing because as I already stated, I can create a new Web Site and the problem goes away.

VS 2010 - Create Class To Return Data As List Object

Dec 4, 2013

I have a Google spreadsheet that I am reading data from and I want to load the data into a list object so I can use but I am having some issues.

Google Spreadsheet
-Worksheet name: Charts
-Tab: Color_Summarized
-Column 1: ColorSummary
-Column 2: ChildID
-Column 3: ParentID

sample rows:

My results are
Yellow Color_Summarized FH 55 28

How do I need to set it up so it keeps all the data loaded instead of just the last instance? Is there a better way then putting in class?

My code:

Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Collections.Generic
Imports Google.GData.Spreadsheets

JavaScript - Create Css Class On The Fly In Codebehind

Aug 4, 2010

I have a search page that is used in multiple places with multiple 'themes' throughout my site. I have a few divs that can have their background color changed based on a radio button selection (whether they are enabled or not). I can do this just fine by changing the css class of the div on the fly with javascript.

However, these themes could potentially change, and the background color is grabbed from a database when the page is created. Right now I do this in the C# codebehind:

string bgStyle = "background-color:" +theme.searchTextHeaderColor +";";
OwnerSearchHeader.Attributes.Add("style", bgStyle);

In the Javascript I need to change this color to make it look disabled, and when the user clicks back to this div I need to re-enable it by changing it back to its original color. But since I only knew this color in the code-behind, I don't know what it was in the Javascript.

So my thought was to create a css class in the resulting HTML page when the page is loaded with the background color I need. Then I could simply switch from the divEnabled and divDisabled class in the javascript. But I'm not exactly sure how to do that.

JQuery :: Create Index From Javascript Object

Feb 24, 2011

would like to speed up the a search using a for loop with a predefined/created index. For this object defined as :

var list =
{ Key="A",
{ Key="B",
{ Key="C",
{ Key="D",
{ Key="E",
{ Key="F",
{ Key="G",
{ Key="H",
{ Key="I",
{ Key="J",
{ Key="K",
{ Key="L",
{ Key="M",
{ Key="N",
{ Key="O",
{ Key="P",
{ Key="Q",
{ Key="R",
{ Key="S",
{ Key="T",
{ Key="U",
{ Key="V",
{ Key="W",
{ Key="Z",

With in Value another array of objects. So here we know that Key A is found on index 0. To get A value I use if(list[i].Key=='A'){...} . I would like to directly navigate to Key with value A without using a loop first to find it, so I thought of a index mechanism for this.

Create A File Of Constants In Javascript?

Jun 30, 2010

Is there a way to create a file of constants in JavaScript, which I can reference and then use?
What I am looking for is something like this:

var Phones =
Nokia: 1,
Samsung: 2

Then, in another JavaScript file JS2.js access those values:

And then, in an aspx file that uses them, reference both of them, like:

<asp:ScriptReference Path="../js/JS2.js" />
<asp:ScriptReference Path="../js/Constants.js" />

Is such an architecture possible? What datatypes can we use? I only exemplified enums because this is what i use right now, but they must be declared in the same file as they are used.

Web Forms :: Unable To Read Web.config File/Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

Nov 2, 2010

I have a website written in C# that was running fine on one server. We moved it to another server and have a couple issues. I am mainly a VB.NET coder but can do a few things in C#. This is not a project - it is a website and can open it in VS2008 no problem. This is an admin site for the whole website where the user can add customer comments, etc. When logging in, it works fine. I can go to one of the admin pages after logging in and works. If I go to two other different pages, I get this error:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

It turns out this is in the main.master page and it is used by the other pages that load fine. The ApplicationTitle variable is set right in the web.config file and like I said, it shows on the other pages.

My question is why would this code work fine for some pages and not two others? All of these admin pages are under a folder called Admin and the web.config file is in the root folder of the website. Its almost like these two pages cannot see the web.config file in the root folder? Why would that be if thats the case?

MVC :: How To Create And Add A Embeded Javascript-resource File By Useing A HtmlHelper

Jan 8, 2011

I have written a smal HtmlHelper, but the thing is that I whould require some javascript functionallity to this helper. So I thought "Whouldnt it be great to actually let the framework add the javascript <script>-tag to the head-element of my Html document once I use this helper?"

So what I whould need/like to do is:

1. Add the Javascript-file as a resource to the dll, since this will allow me to always have the javascript file together with my HtmlHelper, so I dont need to have a seperate file for the js.

2. Add a <script src="{my js-resource}" /> to the head-element of my html document as soon as I use my helper...this is kind of the tricky part..since Im not realy sure about how to do this in MVC...if its even possible..the best sulotion whould be if I didnt need to add any other code in any other file then just in my HtmlHelper...(no code needed to be added in my views or controls) To put it all kind of simple...from what I recall..I want to more or less register a start up script, as its called in WebForms..but in MVC..(I saw an example of how to do it ClientScriptManager, but that whould require me to add extra code on my views and layout/masterpage-files...which simply doesnt do it for me if there is any other way)

Web Forms :: Class Object Becomes NULL After PostBack

Feb 13, 2014

I have a asp.net page titled EstMaterials.aspx with a gridview that fills from a SQL table based on a parameter passed to it.  The code for calling the form is below.

<asp:UpdatePanel ID="upAddMaterials" runat="server">
<div id="AddMaterials" style="text-align:center">
<asp:Button ID="btnDecoy" runat="server" Text="Decoy" style="display:none" />
<asp:LinkButton ID="lbAddMaterials" runat="server" Text="Add Materials"></asp:LinkButton>

 I have an a button field set as a link in a gridview.  When the user clicks on the link it should open the "EstMaterials.aspx" page with a gridview listing the materials required for this job.  If I do not have a parameter i.e, ScheduleWeek.oJob.JobSeqNbr, the gridview fills fine.  However, with the parameter listed the gridview does not fill.  It appears the form opens without ever looking at the parameter being passed.The page load event is below.

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
If Not IsPostBack Then
If Not IsNothing(ScheduleWeek.oJob) Then
Dim tbl As New DataTable
