Web Forms :: Understanding App_Code Related Error CS0121?
Nov 9, 2010
I've searched for about a day and a half and have not been able to find an explanation that I can understand, so please forgive me if this is something you have seen/answered before.
I have a web site that uses the App_Code folder. There are several CS files and classes in that folder. All of this works fine up to this point. However, I wrote an extension method with its own class and file. This fails with the following ambigous reference error (the app is in C#):
Compiler Error Message: CS0121: The call is ambiguous between the following methods or properties: 'GSGeneral.ExtensionMethods.IsNumeric(string)' and ''GSGeneral.ExtensionMethods.IsNumeric(string)'
If I change the extension to a plain static class, there are no problems with it. Based on that, it seems like this is related to it being an extension method.Now I know a work around is to move the file out of the App_Code folder - I've tried it and it works. My question is why does this have issues when all of the other items in the App_Code folder do not.

I am REALLY stuck with this and need a solution in the next 24 hours .i I have uploaded my asp.net web application to the web and have the database and connection strings functioning and reading the data from the database. But when I try to write to the DB
I get the following error :
Server Error in '/' Application.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Description:An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that
SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
The wierd thing about this is the connection strings work from the local machine when I run from Visual Studio and I can write to the DB there, I just cannot write to the DB from the URL.
I am pretty new to asp.net but I am sure it has to be something to do with the web.config.

I am trying to create a simple login page in ASP.NET C# but am getting some error.
I googled about the error, and tried all the solutions but to no avail.What am I doing wrong? The error is:
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"
I think it's something to do with my connection string which is as follows:
<add name="cn"
connectionString="server=HCL;DataBase=GS;Integrated Security=True" />
"HCL" is another machine connected to my PC through the LAN and this database, "GS", resides on it. Is the problem with the value I am giving in "Server" attribute of the above code? If not what else may I be doing wrong?

I've created a small website with a simple sqlite database using vwd 2010 .net 4. In dev and test envionments everything works fine, however when i promote to my hosting provider i receive the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I've been configuring the connection strings (autogenerated from entity framework and attached db) but unable to get it working on the hosting provider, I'm assuming it's related to permissions but not entirely sure how to resolve - here's the web.config as it stands:
<add
name="ApplicationServices"
connectionString="data [code].....
For info the environments are set up as follows:
- Dev environment is vwd express 2010 with sqlite mdf attached
- Test environment is windows 7 server, iis 7 with appdomain identity set to network service

I have created a simple ASP.NET Website in Visual Studio 2008. I have a static C# class (lets call it someClass) contained in a separate file in the App_Code folder. I call a method from that class in my page's code behind like so:
someVar = someClass.someMethod(someParam);
This compiles correctly in VS 2008 but when I move it over to my IIS server, I get the following error (CS0103): Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately. Compiler Error Message: CS0103: The name 'someClass' does not exist in the current context I have created a virtual directory for this website enabling 'Read', 'Run scripts (such ASP)', and 'Execute (such as ISAPI applications or CGI)'. I am not currently utilizing namespaces (as I thought I would not need to and I'm not sure how to use them properly). What am I doing wrong?

As per this how-to, I've successfully configured IIS on my XP-SP3 dev box for SQL Server 2008 Express to save ASP.NET session state information. I'm just using SQL Server because otherwise on every recompile, I was losing the session state which was obnoxious (having to re-login). But, I'm facing an annoying issue in that every time I restart SQL there's this error, and sometimes one or two other very similar friends:The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'ASPStateTempSessions',database 'tempdb', schema 'dbo'.To fix the error, I just open Management Studio and edit the User Mapping for the login/dbo I'm using on the ASPState db, and re-add tempdb to that user with all but deny permissions. Apparently, once the right permissions are there, ASP.NET is able to automatically create the tables it uses. It just can't run that CreateTempTables sproc until the right security is there.HE QUESTION...Is there a way to not have to re-do this on every restart of the SQL Server?I don't really care right now about keeping the temp data across restarts, but I would like to not have to go through this manual step just to get my web app working on localhost, which uses session state variables throughout. I suppose one could resort to some kind of stored procedure within SQL Server to accomplish the task for this machine when the service starts, to not have to do it manually. I'd accept such an answer as a quick fix. But, I'm also assuming there's a better recommended configuration or something. Not seeing an answer to this on the how-to guide or elsewhere here on StackOverflow.

I have the folloing sql server error from my ASP.NET website.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
This seems to be a network related issue. But on the same machine where IIS is running, I have another C# application running that is not experiencing this problem. This happens after the website has been running for a few weeks. Will this be because the database connections are opened but not closed properly?. I wrote a test web page where i just open connection but not close it and I got Time out error when connection pooling is maxed out. Is this memory issue? Memory that are allocated are not deallocated in timely fashion?..
Everything is working fine for a few weeks and after that I get the above network error.

I recently did an OS reinstall and tried to use my previously-working projects. I found that there was trouble connecting to the database for my aspnetdb.mdf. I have also tried a new project and adding a database to the project but I get the error 'a network related or instance specific...' error. I have tried reinstalling sql server 2005 express but still no luck. When I fire up sql server management studio i see the server name is the same as my computer name. I remember before the os reinstall that the server name was 'sqlexpress'.Anybody got any ideas as to how I can create databases inside of visual web developer again?

When I load the asp.net config tool in vs2010 it loads the page up fine but as soon as I click on security I get the following error:-
Code:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may diagnose the problem: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. I have tried a blank project with a login control on but get the same.

your posts and answers are very informative and helpful in my own devolopment and understanding the nature of the beast. Im running vs2010 on a 64bit windows 7 devolopment machine. For days I have been trying to get a Microsoft Reportview to render in a popup. ( i have done this in vs2008 ). I have tried applying the same code from vs2008 to Vs2010, but am comming up with page erros. When loading the default.aspx ( testpage ) I get 'Done but with errors'. If I click on button 1 which shows the popup, I get the report viewer, but it just sits there 'loading'. From advice givenm on this forum, I have used the IE view source code to try and loacate the problem... but to be honest, I dont understand why the page complies ok, but i get errors when it is run, or indeed how to rectify the problem. I have highlighted the two errors.Ie view source code:

I am using Asp.Net MVC 2.0 for creating a user and assigning properties to the user at the same time. I am using my Windows account to access database on my local computer. I am using pre-installed MVC code o create a user with unique user name and password. User is created OK. Then I want to add profile properties like First and Last name at the same time.
I am creatingProfileBase object:
ProfileBase profileBase = ProfileBase.Create(profileInformation.UserName);
where profileInformation is a RegisterModel and has user info.
When I am trying to:
profileBase.SetPropertyValue(.....);
I am getting the following error # 2147467259 A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"}
Why is my connection string works fine the first time and not working now? And how to configure connection to use TCP-IP?
I have SQL Server Browser running ander Local account and openned port in my Firewall.

Asp.net 3.5 using code behind I am using a repeater control. My datasource appears in code behind. I decided to NOT have my listitems populate from the database. I want the user to select a value, send it to the database via an update statement, and then when the user returns to the page (on pageload), have the user's previous selections appear on the screen. note the following:
When I use textboxes and labels, ALL of my data appears within the table of the repeater control. However, when I replaced one of the text boxes (originally used for testing purposes only) with a dropdownlist, I get the following error message'ddlDDuring' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.Parameter name: value My Repeater1_ItemCommandI updates the data within the repeater perfectly. On page load, I want the data from the database to display as the dropdownlist's selected value (or selected item.text). Here is my Asp code
<asp:Repeater ID="Repeater1" runat="server"
onitemcommand="Repeater1_ItemCommand">
---
<
td><asp:Dropdownlist ID="ddlDDuring" runat=server SelectedValue ='<%#Bind("DueDuring")%>' >
<asp:ListItem Value="-select-" Text="-select-" />
<asp:ListItem Value="1st half" Text="1st half" />
<asp:ListItem Value="2nd half" Text="2nd half" />
<asp:ListItem Value="Split" Text="Split" />
</asp:Dropdownlist> </td>
---
C# code behind
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
---
string myConnectString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;
myConnection = new SqlConnection(myConnectString);
strSelect = "SELECT * FROM UserExpenses WHERE UserId=@UserId";
mySqlCmd = new SqlCommand(strSelect, myConnection);
myConnection.Open();
mySqlCmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@UserId", LoggedOnUserId);
myReader = mySqlCmd.ExecuteReader();
Repeater1.DataSource = myReader;
Repeater1.DataBind();
myReader.Close();
myReader = mySqlCmd.ExecuteReader();
while (myReader.Read())
{
ExpAmount = Convert.ToDouble(myReader["Amount"]);
TotExp += ExpAmount;
---
I tried the following code changes on asp page: I changed "SelectedValue" to "Text" and still get the same error message I changed "SelectedValue" to "SelectedItem" and don't get the error message, but dropdown is not populated I set AppendDataBoundItems = true Set first list item value = "" Verified that every field in the table column matched the items in the dropdown list. There were NO null fields in the database.
I just want to understand this error message, as I have exhausted all that I am doing. I also made an attempt to bind the dropdown list, but sine this can only be done within the loop of finding the repeater control, I would either get an error message, or it just would not work.
