Web Forms :: Viewstate Verification Failed - Integrity Check
Nov 16, 2010
I'm getting the following error in my event log appears many times each hour, if somebody could shed some light it would be very nice... Also I am running server 2008 web server, this is NOT a webfarm.
The entire message is Viewstate verification failed. Reason: Viewstate was invalid.
This is getting logged to the eventlog on our "dev" server. It suddenly started to happen. I have been programming locally and I am often (daily, hourly) moving new dll's and pages to the dev server so our BA can test. When my application gets an exception it puts up an error page and there's usually an event logged with "Error" severity - like if an index goes beyond array bounds, etc. The BA is getting the error page, but the message at the time is "Warning" severity and it's this viewstate thing. But the log is indicating it happened in my page. So I don't understand what I could've done to cause it.
I am having this problem with, it seems, Viewstate. This issue only occurs on certain machines, if I browse the website myself it works fine but if another user browses the pages they will lock up and timeout with the error "Viewstate verification failed. Reason: Viewstate was invalid." appering in the event log. Full error is as follows:
I am runnign the SQL 2005 with Membership structure and two web-applications on the same server box. Each web application uses its own Application Name in aspnet_Applications table. There are two application names. The users from web-app1 could not login to web-app2. Each web-apps uses different Application Pool. Each providers section of Membersip use correct applicationName from aspnet_Applications. The first application is working correct.
The problem is that sometimes the users could not login to web-application 2 during day. I get error Event code: 4006 Event message: Membership credential verification failed. The users start to login again after I Recycle - Stop - Start Application Pool of this web application.
I encrypt and decrypt a string with a private key and following functions. so I encrypt a string with Encrypt function and decrypt the encrypted string with decrypt function. If someone can change the encrypted string and then it decrypts with decrypt function, the decrypted string isn't equal to plain text before encrypting. I want to know how can I check is decrypted string equals to plain text before encrypting?
Now here is the weird thing. First i am running it locally on the built in vs2008 web server.I load my control in fine, do a postback from a linkbutton, locally on my machine it all works fine, no issue. However when it goes onto my host, it falls over with the message:
Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request. Now i also load controls dynamically and use postbacks and things in the admin area of the site...and that works fine, however my front end just keeps failing? See the code behing below:
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.
I have simply created two aspx pages for testing purpose, Page1.aspx and Page2.aspx.
Page1.aspx code is as follows:
[Code]....
And Page2.aspx simply have this code:
[Code]....
Now,when i run Page1.aspx and press the button i am getting this error. Can anyone tell me why this error is occuring ?
ERROR:
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. Anyone has experence with "Validation of viewstate MAC failed" issue while using Google Chrome? We have a customer having specific issue with Chrome. It's the strangest thing. In IE and Firefox, the problem does not exist, but once Google Chrome is used instead, he gets the error.
*note, we already have <pages enableViewStateMac="false" enableEventValidation="false"/>
I am having a small problem with my links on the master page. I have inserted 5 link buttons on my masterpage. In every link, I have set the PostBackUrl to the corresponding page. In the link click event, I have also written the C# coding: Response.Redirect(). When I run the homepage (that is using the masterpage as a template) and click on one of the link, I get this error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed.....
I have an application that works fine, problem rise when a page is waiting for the user response for more than 20 min and then user click a link on the form. The application response with the following error -
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.
I read a few articles regarding setting the Pages tag in web.config and set the Pages tag to the following -
Has anyone encountered while using Context.RewriteUrl in global.asax causes this error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster ?
Here is the scenario, let's say I have a url
http://mysite.com/admin/login.aspx instead typing the whole url in address, user can type either http://mysite.com/admin/ or http://mysite.com/admin which all end up at http://mysite.com/admin/login.aspx. When a user type http://mysite.com/admin and entered correct login info, and press login button it gets the error above. How can I resolve this? Tried setting EnableValidateRequest to false and EnableViewstateMac to false also even I do not want to use this approach and still does not work.
I have just setup a new ASP.NET Web Forms Site cleared out the default contents and added a button and a click event. That's it. Yet trying to run the page I get the error in the subject.
Looking around the web and this forum I have tried numerous things, including setting the <pages> tag each of the following three ways (not at the same time of course), adding debug = true to various places, etc. but the error persists.
I created a MembershipProvider WCF service which my website is using as its AspNetSqlMembershipProvider. I'm experiencing delays (eg. 20 seconds) in logging in, but ultimately, I am able to log in. I have a number of "Information" events in the Event Viewer on the machine that houses the MembershipProvider service. This is the error:
Event Type: Information Event Source: ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0 Event Category: Web Event
I have received an error "Validation of viewstate MAC failed".
I am hosting the web site on my own server, so there is nothing like a "Web Farm or cluster". Can you advise what could be the problem with this error.
I only get this error if the page is left inactive for more then 20 minutes and it throws the exception, so users have log-off and login to continue working fine.

I'm trying to figure out this error but I can't point out what's exactly causing this. Here is what's happening.User loggs in for a few hours and gets "Validation of viewstate MAC failed" Error after post back.I have set timeout in Web.config as follow.
I'm getting the old "Validation of viewstate MAC failed" error when I click the submit button on my form. (Seehttp://blogs.msdn.com/b/tom/archive/2008/03/14/validation-of-viewstate-mac-failed-error.aspx) The thing is I'm getting the error even when the page is completely loaded (it can be sitting there for five minutes before I hit submit but I still get the error). This isn't even a particularly lengthy page (which is one of the preconditions). It uses a DetailsView (which I understand is another precondition for this error), but it's the only databound control on the page. Also, whenever users get this error (which is 100% of the time when they click Submit), they lose their login authentication and have to log back in. This page/site has been in use for about six months but the error suddenly started a few weeks ago without any changes being made to the code.
I've run into this bizarre situation wherein I get the below error if I set page size other than 5 in the page using this control.
"Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request. For example, when adding controls dynamically, the controls added during a post-back must match the type and position of the controls added during the initial request."
This GridView is a hierarchial type. I add a new GridView below each row in the webcontrol overriding OnRowDataBound.
Yes, it's the infamous viewstate again! Now I am aware that problems can ocurr if you load controls in the wrong order or if the viewstate IDs are incorrect after postbacks etc etc. But my issue is that I am not really creating any controls dynamically - I only have one user control on the page.
More importantly, the issue seems to be occuring with just one user. What could be the problem? Corrupt browser cache?
ok - so I've narrowed it down a bit more. When I select an item from a drop down list control (which is a UserControl) - and then attempt to rebind my grid using the selected value, the error occurs.
The selectedvalue on postback seems to be zero every time (because the control is not in the viewstate somehow?!). The UserControl (containing the dropdownlist) is added at design-time.
i have these message in only one user of my web ASP.NET application.
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey & validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.
After changing the Master Page in ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application, I keep getting this familiar error when I try a postback without filling in the mandatory form elements which are validated by the server:
"Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster."
The new page refers to a lot of jQuery code with lightboxes, superfish etc. Could that be a problem while doing a postback?
If I revert back to the original master, the error disappears and I'm able to validate form fields. Both masters are located in the same path.
After a little debugging, I've realized that a directive in the master page:
<% Html.RenderAction("menu", "nav"); %>
is creating the problem. The directive asks the "menu" action of the controller "nav" to inject a partial view Menu.ascx. If I delete this line from the new master page, everything works OK. My app's left bar navigation relies on this directive to work properly. Is there any way I can get around this?
I am trying a MVC 2 application on my computer's IIS and when I go to a page that contains a form I get the following error:
-----------------------
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.
Description:An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Web.HttpException: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. ------------------------------
What is strange is that on the begining the form is ok but after a while I started to get this error. And why at the start everything was ok and after a while I started to get this error?
I have gridview control. visit [URL] but when i change page index of this i get error the following error
