Web Forms :: When Running The Above Asp.net Gives An Error Saying An Object Tag Must Contain A Class, ClassID Or ProgID Attribute?
Mar 2, 2010
I have the following code:
<object runat="server" id="test1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="2000" height="1000">
<param name="movie" value="Finance/Averdaf.swf" />
<param name="quality" value="high" />
</object>
when running the above asp.net gives an error saying An object tag must contain a Class, ClassID or ProgID attribute. What can I do about this? I need to access the object from code behind because I might change the value path to something else at runtime.

I have an existing class for an input, is it possible to add an additional class for the object in C#.net, instead of doing a if/else and not having a preset class on the object in the first place?

When I get an Object Ref error, it can sometimes be a real pain to find out which variable is causing the error (when you can't debug). Is there a way for this error to throw the classname that isn't assigned?

I can have a base class for views in an MVC project like this:
public class BaseViewPage : System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage
{
public string Something { get; set; }
}
And then in the ASPX I can do this:
<%@ Page Something="foo" Language="C#" Inherits="MyNamespace.BaseViewPage" %>
This works fine; the problem is when I try to do the same with the generic version:
public class BaseViewPage<TModel> : System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<TModel> where TModel : class
{
public string Something { get; set; }
}
When I try to use this from the ASPX, like this:
<%@ Page Something="foo" Language="C#" Inherits="MyNamespace.BaseViewPage<SomeClass>" %>
I get the error message:
Error parsing attribute 'something': Type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage' does not have a public property named 'something'.
Notice how it tries to use System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage rather than my BaseViewPage class. To make it more interesting, if I remove the "Something" attribute from the Page directive and put some code in the generic version of BaseViewPage (OnInit for example) the class is actually called / used / instantiated.
So, am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation.

I've scenario where I want to insert data into database without post back. there are around 12 to 13 fields which i need to insert. I'm passing DTO from the client side which is actually Json object. Now the problem which i'm facing is how to convert that Json object which i got in webservice to the "class" (in my case class name is User) object.
[Code]....
In the above case AddNewUser method takes the object of User class. But i'm getting casting error. So how do I convert Json object to the "User" class object?

Is it possible to access a parent class from within an attribute.
For example I would like to create a DropDownListAttribute which can be applied to a property of a viewmodel class in MVC and then create a drop down list from an editor template. I am following a similar line as Kazi Manzur Rashid here.
He adds the collection of categories into viewdata and retrieves them using the key supplied to the attribute.
I would like to do something like the below,
public ExampleDropDownViewModel {
public IEnumerable<SelectListItem> Categories {get;set;}
[DropDownList("Categories")]
public int CategoryID { get;set; }
}
The attribute takes the name of the property containing the collection to bind to. I can't figure out how to access a property on the parent class of the attribute. Does anyone know how to do this?

I've create a custom attribute for my web pages... In the base page class I've created I'm trying to pull if that attribute has been set. Unfortunately it does not come back as part of the GetCustomAttributes function. Only if I explicitly use the typeof(myclass) to create the class. I have a feeling it's due to how asp.net classes are generated.

i use GUI tool of vs2008 to generate some LINQ to SQL class, my problem is StringTemplate can not reach attributes of those model
$persons:{
<li>$it.name$</li>
}$
it printed:
<li></li>
<li></li>
<li></li>
name is public property of Person model. If i create a person class by myself, and the same attributes, StringTemplate can get it.

In the VS2005 environment, when I test my session to make sure the page redirects to the main page (itself) if the session is null, it works. There is no error.
The function I use for this is:
[code]....
However, when it is in the production environment in IIS 6.0, when the session has timed out, and I then do a postback by doing some slider control, I see the page reload but immediately thereafter, it throws a Server Error exception of : Object reference not set to an instance of object.
Looking at the stack trace, the event occured:
AJAXEnabledWebApplication1._Default.Slider1_TextChanged(Object sender, EventArgs e)
however, why is it that the Slider1_TextChanged event fired even even after during page_load, the page was told to do a response.direct ?? shouldn't the entire page have gone through a full-page refresh life cycle ? why did it continue on to attempt to raise the Slider1_TextChanged event?

I'm new to programming in ASP.NET, but I'm making my way through Wrox's Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB.NET.
I'm at a section where I'm creating a BasePage. I successfully created a BasePage by creating a new class file in my App_Code folder called BasePage.cs with the following code:
[Code]....
If I run that code everything works out fine. The page loads and all is well. But, if I try to do the same thing to a page that uses my MasterPage.master file, I get the following error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Why is that? In the example code from the book (that also uses a MasterPage.master file), everything excutes and runs just fine. But in my test, I get the above error. I've tried comparing my pages to the books included source pages, but I can't find any differences.

In the same Code behind file I have:
// This works
Label lblTopNavBarInfo = (Label)Master.FindControl("lblTopNavBarInfo");
lblTopNavBarInfo.Text = "Currently Serving: + FirstName + " " + LastName ;
// This compiles but throws an error in the browser
LinkButton lnkBtnProductsOwned = (LinkButton)LeftNav_CustServ1.FindControl("ProductsOwned"); // The Control is visible
lnkBtnProductsOwned.Enabled = false; // Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I have just recently converted my VB code to C# and now having this error when I try to add an item to my listbox, and the value is coming from the item page. I get the error at this segement:
lstboxCart.Items.Add(cartItem.Display());
My listbox is supposed to add the product's name, quantity, and price onto one row.
Here's what I have so far:
[code]...
[Code]....
[Code]....
My guess is that the source of the problem could be in the foreach loop from my cart class, shouldn't I be using that for arrays only? If I need to post any markup code or any other class, let me know.

I have a VS 2003 Web app that I'm creating. I'm using a Panel control and I'm trying to apply a CSS class to this panel. However, when I try coding the following statement
<asp:Panel class="pnl2" runat="server">
it doesn't like the "class" attribute saying "could not find any attribute 'class' of element panel"? I'm used to using VS 2005 and higher and haven't seen this before. What am I doing wrong?
