C# - Algorithm To Balance Variably-sized Items Into Roughly-balanced Sets?

I'm seeking an algorithm to split a list of items of varying sizes into "N" number of similarly-sized groups.
Specifically, I'm working on an ASP.NET site in C# where I have a (database-retrieved) list of strings. The strings are of varying lengths. I have a set of columns which need to display the strings. I need an algorithm that will find the most balanced sets (item order is irrelevant) to allow the final columns to be as balanced as possible.
Abstracted Example:
Creating 3 columns.
Items to distribute:
- Item A - height 5
- Item B - height 3
- Item C - height 7
- Item D - height 2
- Item E - height 3
Desired output:
Column 1: Item A, Item D
Column 2: Item C
Column 3: Item B, Item E

I have many (>600) EPS files(300 KB - 1 MB) in database. In my ASP.NET application (using ASP.NET 4.0) I need to retrieve them one by one and call a web service which would convert the content to the JPEG file and update the database (JPEGContent column with the JPEG content). However, retrieving the content for 600 of them itself takes too long from the SQL management studio itself (takes 5 minutes for 10 EPS contents).
So I have two issues:-
1) How to get the EPS content ( unfortunately, selecting certain number of content is not an option :-( ):-
Approach 1:-

2) Converting EPS to JPEG using a web method for >600 contents. Ofcourse, each call would be a long running operation. Would task parellel library (TPL) be a better way to achieve this?
Also, is doing the entire thing in a SQL CLR function a good idea?
EDIT :- Unfortunately, I have to do this in the ASP.NET application itself and doing that in a separate process like Windows service is not an option.

We have 2 asp.net web servers working through the LoadBalancer that are accessible externally. Earlier, for all applications we did logging into DB. Now we have 1 more app that doesn't work with DB, it is used for 'messages transferring'. On TEST environment it does logging into files into a local folder.
If we deploy it "as is" to PROD we will have 2 separate log files... that is not very good idea. Connecting to DB just for logging doesn't seem reasonable too...
Possible solution could be store log file into a shared folder somewhere on another server.

I have an intranet ASP.NET web application in which I need to get the IP of the client's machine. I do this vis the following code:
HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables.Item("REMOTE_HOST")
It used to work when my ASP.NET site was only hosted on a single server. However once we got the load balancer installed and migrated our apps to a web farm, the code above returns the IP of the Load Balancer device and not of the client anymore.
I am working with the networking folks to determine what can be configured differently with the load balancer, but in the meantime I was wondering if there was another way I could get the client's IP other than using that IIS Server Variable?

I have a .net web application in a load balanced environment over 3 servers. The load balancing is done with a load balancer. My site is [URL]with serveral javascript files such as [URL]
Is it possible to set it up that when request goes to server1 for [URL] then all javascript, css requests also go to server1, server2 or server3? Is there any web.config configuration that can be put in place to handle this?

I have a web page that allows user to make transaction and they are allowed to choose if they want their transaction to be immediately transferred to the payee or for future transfer. I have problem handling future transfer, for an example, I want to transfer $100 to A on 12 August but today is only 09 August. So the amount should be deducted . I decided to make 2 balances; Available and Ledger balances. Available balance is the net balance after doing all the future transfers etc. but for ledger balance is what is available at the point of time. I'm thinking how should I form the query for the SQL statement. Currently, this is what I have. Transfer code = 2 -> future transfer

How do you currently find the balance between javascript and code behind. I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages.
Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete.
1. Personal Details
2. Address Information
3. Little bit more about yourself
You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps.
Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself.
Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel?
Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()?

I wonder what algorithm PasswordDeviveBytes are using, so I can tell someone who are not .NET programmer that this secretkey was made by that alogorithm and that he can use this algorithm also - And then he should get the same results as PasswordDeriveBytes method

We are converting an ASP site (using DotNetNuke) to a new PHP site. The only thing we have right now is a full export of the existing database. One of the tables is called "aspnet_Membership" and contains the following fields:
Password (looks like base64)
PasswordFormat (always value 2)
PasswordSalt (looks like base64)
PasswordQuestion (always empty)
PasswordAnswer (always empty)
We would like to decode these passwords and hash them to fit our own framework. From what I understand from the .NET documentation these kind of passwords can be decrypted. Is there an algorithm available that can do this or is it more complicated than that? Will it be possible if we create an ASP script on the current server?

I need an algorithm to determine who match who in the tournament bracket, say I have 32 ( number could be flexible) contestants seeded 1 to 32, at round 1, seed 1 matches with 32, seed 2 with 31 and so forth. and the vb.net example returns: ƒeñüS-ÁHÖ]ü-KÖw(JÝÒ mi"
What am I missing? I assume it's something to do with the character encoding?

I heard that .NET framework will encrypt the ViewState using SHA1 or some other algorithm. So if i know the SHA1 encryption and decryption algorithm can i tamper a ViewState?I mean a malicious user studies SHA1 encryption algorithm,if he understand that algorith and develops decryption algorithm ,will it open the road of viewstate tampering? or SHA1 or other algorithm uses any random tricks for encryption and decryption?

I need an example on how to implement AES encryption/decryption in .NET. I've been googling but haven't yet found any good examples. I've for example found AES example whih after some research wasn't 100% AES. I have to make sure by AES encryption/decryption is 100% AES, as I have to send email to the authorities explaining how I use AES (with secret key all), so they can hire some encryption expert which verify that we encrypt/decrypt it correctly.
