C# - Change Attribute Of Membership Provider Programmatically In Web.Config
Jan 26, 2011
I have the following defaultmembership provider in my web.config
<add name="UmbracoMembershipProvider" type="umbraco.providers.members.UmbracoMembershipProvider" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="false" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false" defaultMemberTypeAlias="Another Type" passwordFormat="Hashed" />
I am trying to update the enablePasswordReset from false to true programmatically but am struggling.. This is as far as I got!
ConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(Request.ApplicationPath);
var section = (MembershipSection)config.GetSection("system.web/membership");
var defaultProvider = section.DefaultProvider;
var providerSettings = section.Providers[defaultProvider];
// Now what?

I want to add/edit available siteMap providers in web.config file from code behind.
I am using the siteMap providers currently in the application web.config in a format given below:
<siteMap>
<providers>
<add siteMapFile="~/App_Themes/MyAppDefault/MySiteMap.sitemap"
name="MyAppDefault" type="System.Web.XmlSiteMapProvider" />
</providers>
</siteMap>
This is allowing my application user to show up a different Site Map as and when the theme is changed.
But when I tried to do the same with the following code I faced with an issue.
configuration = WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration("~")
section = CType(configuration.GetSection("system.web/siteMap"), SiteMapSection)
Dim provider As New ProviderSettings()
If Not section Is Nothing Then
provider.Name = txtError.Text
provider.Type = "System.Web.XmlSiteMapProvider"
section.Providers.Add(provider)
configuration.Save()
End If
This code is not allowing a provider.siteMapFile property (provideer is the ProviderSettings object).
As well the maximum possible way I can add a new SiteMap provider in web.config is as follows
<siteMap>
<providers>
<add name="MyAppCustom" type="System.Web.XmlSiteMapProvider" />
</providers>
</siteMap>
If anybody can suggest a way for me to add/edit the 'siteMapFile' attribute of the provider.

I got this error message
Could not find the specified membership provider
Here's my web.config setting:
[Code]....
I'm trying to use ASP.NET Membership with ActiveDirectory authentication. The authentication with AD was working fine until I added another connection-string and roleManager. So, what's wrong with this setting?

I'm having a problem with a custom Membership implementation for ASP.NET using EF. The thing is, my web.config features the default values for the provider but at runtime those default are only being read in Initialize() the first time provider is instantiated (that happens for instance when I request the Register view via GET but when I fill in the form and POST to the controller the Initialize() on the provider class doesn't get called and all the provider settings are null or default value types value.
This is my web.config section:
[Code]....
Since my provider class is quite huge I am not posting it here but will post some parts of it if requested.

I created a custom membership provider in my ASP.NET 4.0 web site, stored in App_Code, and referenced in my web.config.
However, it doesn't appear to be pulling values out of web.config during initialization.
The code was taken from [URL] , and the only modifications were changing "connectionStringName" here to the name of my connection string:
[Code]....
The connection string always comes back as nothing in this line:
[Code]....
No matter what I change the password format to in web.config, the default value here is always used:
[Code]....
So to me it's pretty clear it's not pulling out values for some reason. Here is the reference to the membership provider in web.config.

I have a small windows forms application that uses the membership provider that is defined in my app.config file. I want to get rid of my app.config file and initialize the membership provider completely from code. The reason behind this is because I want to be able to dynamically connect to different databases containing asp.net user tables and I want the user to be able to enter the desired database information into a text box at run time. Is this possible or is it required that I have an app.config file?

I am working in a Silverlight 4 + RIA Services application. On the server side I am using Entity Framework and SQL Server. The user authentication is performed in the application using the default ASP.NET Membership Provider.
I am also using some profile properties to store some user preferences. Unfortunately I came across a situation where I have to change one of this properties in all users.
Altought I am using EF to manage data persistence, the ASP Membership provider tables are not in my entities diagram, since everything I must do regarding membership is performed using the objects available on the provider.
So I was thinking to use this objects to change the user prefrences, but my question is about what happens if something fails? Is there any transaction object I could use on the Membership objects to perform an atomic operation?
I know EF supports transactions, but in this case I would have to add the asp.net membership tables to my diagram.. only for that operation.

I have a custom security module which is retrieving the applicationName of the defalut Membership Provider. I am using this value for convenience only. I mean, sometimes, I will authenticate the user as per "Windows Authentication" where there is no Login Form, and yet, I need to access the "applicationName" of the membership provider.So, in some of my applications, I am not using a memberhsip, and I leave it empty. And I found out that if the <membership> is not defined in web.config, it will default to "AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type "System.web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider".I can add an key in <appSettings>, but I like to using the applicationName of the default membership provider, becuase in other applications I am using Forms Authentication, with a custom membership provider.If try to setup a dummy memberyship provider, I will get error that the connection string is empty.How I can set the "applicationName" property in web.config if I am using "Windows" authentication, and I have no membership provider ?

I've made a change to my web config membership properties and now I seem to be having issues changing my password. I originally had
minRequiredPasswordLength="7" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="0"
I've change it to passwordStrengthRegularExpression="^(?=.{8,15}$)(?=.*[0-9])(?=.*[A-Z]).*" however it still keeps coming up telling me that I need at least 7 characters and one nonAlphaNumberic... I looked at my machine config and made some adjustments there so that
minRequiredPasswordLength="" minRequiredNonalphanumericCharacters="" were blank

Does anyone has a solution (sample code) for the following features:
Create a randomGuid/Cryptographically strong random number Send a unique URL containing the random number to the user's email address When confirmed, the user is asked to change password
My provider is currently parametrized this way:
[code]....
The security issues with this type of procedure have been discussed here before.

I have watched the how to video on Creating a Custom Membership provider. So far it works great. My login control interacts well with it etc. Now i've created a Custom Role Provider. I've created a class that inherits the RoleProvider base class and i've added code to each Sub. My question is, what is the best way to implement the role provider, considering I get the Roles etc from the database?

I am trying to build an application that
1. user can login by their AD account and password.
2. AD account can be assigned to different group.
I know there is a training video - [URL] to teach how to use the tool to provision the membership schema to SQL server for Forms authentication. but how can I use AD authentication with this?

<profile>
<providers>
<clear/>
<add name="AspNetSqlProfileProvider" type="System.Web.Profile.SqlProfileProvider" connectionStringName="ApplicationServices" applicationName="/"/>
</providers>
<properties>
<add name="FirstName"/>
<add name="LastName"/>
</properties>
</profile>
I have the code snippet above in my webconfig file. I am attempting to set the FirstName property in codebehind on a register.aspx page. Like this:
Profile.FirstName = ((TextBox)RegisterUser.CreateUserStep.ContentTemplateContainer.FindControl("FirstName")).Text;
VS says Profile is in System.Web.Profile Namespace. I then use it like this "System.Web.Profile.FirstName", but says first name does not exist in System.Web.Profile.FirstName namespace.
How do I set the property and later retrieve it?

I am trying to achieve a SSO implimentation across my websites so i am using the machine key attribute to do so.now the trouble starts here as the website the user logs in is on the .net 1.1 framework and the website it it navigating to is .net 4.0.I have share the same machine-key across both the application . It works fine in my testing environment but as i move to the deployment server ,it just dosent work !So what i could do is read this article on MSDN :
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/eb0zx8fc.aspx
this tells me to add a domin attribute like below
<forms loginUrl="~Login.aspx" defaultUrl="Default.aspx" protection="All" timeout="80" name=".ASPXAuth" domain="asbc.com"/>
but this thing just dosent work on the 1.1 application and throws an error Unrecognized attribute 'domain'.
Where do i get to mention the domin in my 1.1 application.?

I was hoping some of you would entertain my XmlSiteMapProvider question. I have a portal site that has multiple ASP.NET Role Providers. One for each child web application. I need to basically change the role provider on the fly. Does anyone know if this is possible? My approach is to maybe override the XmlSiteMapProvider and add an attribute indicating which Role Provider to use. Then, in the
IsAccessibleToUser method, I was planning on dynamically change the role provider some how based off the new attribute.
Again, is this approach seem reasonable/doable or am I in the weeds here? I'm open to alternatives if anyone has one.

I am building my first asp.net app from scratch. I have two different membership providers. One is a basic sql provider while the other is active directory. The user "role" is determined by how the user logs in. I want to use the Role Manager functionality of asp.net but I don't want to build the whole role provider part when I really don't have "roles" in my application, I have two membership types.
Is there a way to set the role of the user through the membership provider at login or in some way mark a logged in user as having been authenticated by sql or AD?
This is my first asp.net app, am I even thinking about this the right way?

I am using SQL Membership Provider to create user accounts for my web site and for some reason, the CreateDate and LastLoginDate fields are NOT saving the current time of my machine when I add a new user to the website. It is showing the previous day's date and the time is displayed as PM when it's AM and vise-versa in the CreateDate and LastLoginDate fields in aspnet_Membership table. I am developing and running the website via localhost on my laptop using IIS 7 (Windows 7). Does this have anything to do with my laptop's clock settings or is there something I need to configure in the web.config file or in IIS.

The default implementation is not very appropriate normally and I haven't seen so far a good implementation of a custom membership provider, probably because this is not possible.
