C# - How To Include Ampersand In Connection String Password After Using Entity Framework

Sep 29, 2010

I'm using Entity Framework 4 for a simple app and would like to bake my connection credentials into the following connection string:

<connectionStrings>
<add name="MyEntities"
connectionString="metadata=res://*/MyDataModel.csdl|res://*/MyDataModel.ssdl|res://*/MyDataModel.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string="Data Source=localhostDEV;Initial Catalog=MyDB;UserId=myUser;Password=jack&jill;MultipleActiveResultSets=True""
providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" />
</connectionStrings>

However, the password (which I cannot change) contains an ampersand. ASP.NET throws:
Configuration Error: An error occurred while parsing EntityName. Line XX, position YYY.

If I replace the ampersand in the password with &, I get a SqlException: Login failed for user 'myUser'. Usually this trick works, but I'm guessing that something is failing because this is technically a connection string inside a connection string.

What should I do here? Most of my classes include code like:

using (var context = new MyEntities()) {
// do work
}

Update: It turns out that the credentials I am using are a domain account, so what I really need is Integrated Security=True in the connection string rather than a password.

Encoding the ampersand as indicated in the accepted answer should work fine, though I haven't tested it.

Provider Connection String Of Entity Framework Be Substituted With A DB Connection String Already Defined In Web.config?

Feb 2, 2011

I have a db connection string 'ApplicationServices' defined in the connectionString section of web.config and 3 Entity Framework connection strings which have the provider connection string attribute with the same connection string as the one in 'ApplicationServices'. Is there a way to reference connectionString in 'ApplicationServices' for the provider connection string attribute of the EF connection string in the web.config, rather than providing the connection string all over again?

How can I retrieve the Entity Framework 4 connection string from a custom config file, not web.config?

Edit: Is it reasonable to delete the default constructor generated code and recreate it in a partial class to use the pulled in connection string?

I would really like to avoid changing all references to the EF context with an overloaded method including the connection string.

How To Generate A Dynamic Connection String In Entity Framework 4

Sep 27, 2010

Is it possible to choose a specific database that will be used with the entity framework? At this time, I use the connection string in the Web.Config as database authentication.

I have twelve databases, each of them has the same structure and the same stored procedure.

There is one database for each client. When a client wants to login into the system, he needs to choose his database name from a listbox.

I would like to create a dynamic connection string which will include the database name chosen by the client.

Multiple Join In Entity Framework And Include All Data?

Dec 10, 2010

I want to write a query in Entity Framework that has multiple joins. The only problem is the tables arn't related using their primary / foreign keys (its the Umbraco database), as such I can't use .Include and the Navigation properties.

Essentially the query I would like to run is this:

select t.*, n.* from cmsContentType t
inner join cmsContentTypeAllowedContentType a on t.nodeId = a.Id
inner join vicinity.DocumentTypeExtendedProperty x on x.UmbracoDocumentTypeId = t.pk
inner join umbracoNode n on n.id = t.nodeId

I have two EF entities mapped to cmsContentType and umbracoNode as such I would like them to be populated as if I was running the query like

var q = from p in cmsContentType.Include("umbracoNode")

Entity Framework 4 - Check If Navigation Property Collection Is Empty, Without Include() Or Load()?

Sep 28, 2010

In an MVC view, I'm looking for a way to determine if a parent entity's collection of child entities is empty, so I can decide if I need to call a RenderPartial() or not.

For a one-to-one I've been using the following:

<% if (Model.Book.GenreReference.EntityKey != null) %>
{.....}

but I'm unsure how to do it in a one-to-many scenario, or if it can even be done without the use of Include() or Load().

ADO.NET :: VS 2010 - No Entity Framework Or LINQ Support For SQL Server 2000 SQLOLEDB Connection?

Sep 1, 2010

I'm working with Visual Studio 2010 and for Data Connections am connecting to a SQL Server 2000 production database. When I try to drag a table to a .dbml file, the Object Relational Designer says, "The selected object(s) use an unsupported data provider." If I try to create an .edmx file via Generate from database, then the alert is, "This server version is not supported. You must have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or later."

So VS 2010 has no support for the Data Entity Framework or LINQ when connecting to a SQL Server 2000 database? If that is the case, what is the best data access strategy for this scenario?

SQL Server Connection String - Hide Password From Other Developers

Jun 1, 2010

We're migrating one of our sites to ASP.Net. We do not want to use integrated security, which uses the windows account to connect to sql server (not going to get into why, its just out of the question). We created a username and password to connect to SQL Server, and would like to use that username and password, however, we also do not want other developers to see this information (easily read from the web.config).... I know it can be encrypted, but it can just as easily be decrypted by the developers - plus encryption has a performance hit.

Windows Authentication To SQL With AD Username And Password In Connection String?

Jul 29, 2010

I'm writing an ASP.Net MVC intranet application which is accessed via handhelds and a range of browsers. My users all have AD accounts and have different permission to our SQL database views/procs depending on who they area. The database also uses CURRENT_USER for horizontal partitioning.

Because of the range of devices that need to access the application I can't rely on impersonation/delegation or the trusted subsystem. I want the user to simply input username and password (same as AD) when the above mechanisms fail.

Does anyone know how I can use AD username and password in a connection string to access the database without creating a set of SQL mirror accounts? I can't login with network service or a sql proxy account because the database needs to be user aware.

Ampersand Escape Character Doesn't Work On Impersonation Password

Jun 23, 2010

I'm trying to connect to my sql server 2008 database and I'm using impersonation within my asp.net 3.5 application

<identity impersonate="true" userName="testUserName" password="test&test" />

Naturally the compiler won't compile until I use the escape character:

<identity impersonate="true" userName="testUserName" password="test&test" />

So it compiles, unfortunately when I run my app, it get this:

Parser Error Message: Could not create Windows user token from the credentials specified in the config file. Error from the operating system 'Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Source Error:

<identity impersonate="true" userName="testUserName" password="test&test" />

Escape An Ampersand In A Path String?

Nov 8, 2010

I need to be able to navigate through the file system from an asp.net page and gather metadata on files, directories ... The simple code I've put together makes a list of directories/files in a given location and has everything displayed as a link button. My problem is with link buttons under which I have paths that include ampersands and blanks. Here's a sample of code:

[Code]....

The Response.Redirect("aPage.aspx?d="+ e.CommandArgument.ToString()); line has the problem ... the e.CommandArgument.ToString() shows a truncated path that stops just before the first ampersand detected. I tried escaping the ampersand with a backslash but it did not work ... somehow I guess it's not exactly the character that's causing the problem ..
