C# - Track And Identify Users With Memcached - Keep The "userId"

Jun 14, 2010

I have social network website that contains thousands of users. Until now I used the classic way of storing user's details in the session object. Now, I want to upgrade it, so it will work against Memcached, and the key value is the "userId". My question is: What is or where is the best place to keep the "userId" so I can use it constantly for querying the user's details from Memcached?

Security :: Best Way To Identify All Users Currently Logged In?

Feb 10, 2011

I know how to identify the current user during a specific browsing session and can thus control the data, etc, made visible to that individual user. I also know how to find out how many users logged in within the recent past, using:

Membership.GetNumberOfUsersOnline()
.... which I believe calculates the number of users who have logged in within the past 15 minutes. However, I would like to know if there is any way to identify all the users who are logged in at a point in time. Is this possible?

I have a confusing question, I have a user table and it stores all the usual data for a user that you would expect but im trying to figure out how a user could add another user?

Sounds strange but each user in the User table has his own UI which is UserID how could I add another table where UserID can have a relationship with another UserID?

i.e how would I right the syntax for the above question if I wanted to display all the UserIDs friends on a page. How would I add a friend.

C# - Multi-Application Server Environment And Memcached Security?

Feb 24, 2010

We are looking to integrate Memcached into our infrastructure, but have a security concern before we do. We run several platforms including ASP.NET and ColdFusion and have many app developers working many little applications across the different platforms. The concern is this: App A places item "dog" into cache.

App B reads item "dog" (or worse: App B updates item "dog")

After this happens, App A either retrieves bad information, or has already had its information viewed, aka "stolen". What we would like to do is make it so that each app can only interact with its own sandbox, and may not interfere with or read other application's data.

C# - Caching W/file Dependency: Static Var Vs. AspNet Cache Vs. Memcached

Sep 29, 2010

TL;DR: Which is likely faster: accessing static local variable, accessing variable stored in HttpRuntime.Cache, or accessing variable stored in memcached? At work, we get about 200,000 page views/day. On our homepage, we display a promotion. This promotion is different for different users, based on their country of origin and language.

All the different promotions are defined in an XML file on each web server. We have 12 web servers all serving the same site with the same XML file. There are about 50 different promotion combinations based on country/language. We imagine we'll never have more than 200 or so (if ever) promotions (combinations) total.

The XML file may be changed at any time, out of release cycle. When it's changed, the new definitions of promotions should immediately change on the live site. Implementing the functionality for this requirement is the responsibility of another developer and I.

Originally, I wrote the code so that the contents of the XML file were parsed and then stored in a static member of a class. A FileSystemWatcher monitored changes to the file, and whenever the file was changed, the XML would be reloaded/reparsed and the static member would be updated with the new contents. Seemed like a solid, simple solution to keeping the in-memory dictionary of promotions current with the XML file. (Each server doing this indepedently with its local copy of the XML file; all XML files are the same and change at the same time.)

The other developer I was working holds a Sr. position and decided that this was no good. Instead, we should store all the promotions in each server's HttpContext.Current.Cache with a CacheDependency file dependency that automatically monitored file changes, expunging the cached promotions when the file changed. While I liked that we no longer had to use a FileSystemWatcher, I worried a little that grabbing the promotions from the volitile cache instead of a static class member would be less performant.

(Care to comment on this concern? I already gave up trying to advocate not switching to HttpRuntime.Cache.)

Later, after we began using HttpRuntime.Cache, we adopted memcached with Enyim as our .NET interface for other business problems (e.g. search results). When we did that, this Sr. Developer decided we should be using memcached instead of the HttpRuntime (HttpContext) Cache for storing promotions. Higher-ups said "yeah, sounds good", and gave him a dedicated server with memcached just for these promotions. Now he's currently implementing the changes to use memcached instead.

I'm skeptical that this is a good decision. Instead of staying in-process and grabbing this promotion data from the HttpRuntime.Cache, we're now opening a socket to a network memcached server and transmitting its value to our web server. This has to be less performant, right? Even if the cache is memcached. (I haven't had the chance to compile any performance metrics yet.)On top of that, he's going to have to engineer his own file dependency solution over memcached since it doesn't provide such a facility.

Wouldn't my original design be best? Does this strike you as overengineering? Is HttpRuntime.Cache caching or memcached caching even necessary?

Should I just use exception's message for it or is there a better way?

How To Identify CMYK Images Using C#

Feb 21, 2011

Does anybody know how to properly identify CMYK images in ASP.NET using C#? When I check the Flags attribute of a Bitmap instance, I get incorrect results.

I have created three images to test this: cmyk.jpg, rgb.jpg and gray.jpg. These are respectively CMYK, RGB and Grayscale images.

This is my test code:

[Code]....

This produces the following output:

I have checked the actual images and cmyk.jpg really is a CMYK image.

Apparently, this is a "known issue". Alex Gil had the same problem in WPF (see this question: How to identify CMYK images using C#) and he managed to solve it by using a BitmapDecoder class to load the images. I'm a bit uncomfortable using that solution in ASP.NET because it requires me to add references to WindowsBase.dll and PresentationCore.dll and I'm not sure I want those in a web project.

Does anyone know of any other pure .NET solutions to check if an image is in the CMYK format that I can safely use in ASP.NET?

C# - Uniquely Identify Every Page In My App?

Jul 1, 2010

I have an ASP.Net app with a lot of pages in it.My problem is to uniquely identify every page in my app. now the app might have pages with just the page name eg: home.aspx and can have pages with query strings eg:testPage.aspx?q1=1&q2=2.what i have been thinking is since every URL in my app is unique I could use the page name + all query string params concatenated(key and value) to identify the page uniquely.eg:home.asp home testPage.aspx?q1=1&q2=2 -> testpageq11q22.Is this the correct way to go or is there a better way to do it.The reason I want to do this is I need to add at run time some meta data information from a database for each of the pages. The PageID then becomes my unique ID which I can then map all my meta data info in the db to.

[code]...

would potentially point to the same page (where the optional param gives me some kind of meta information thats is not being used to generate the content on the page)
