C# - Populating An Asp:dropdownlist From Multiple Tables In A SQL Database?

Dec 22 09 at 14:27

I have 4 tables: CustomerDocument, CustomerLink, CustomerAdditionalInfo, and CustomerImage. They each have a value of CustomerNumber, and I need to way to pull the customer numbers from each table and put in a drop down list. I know how to do it with one table, but not multiple. Also, there is a restriction that the CustomerNumber needs to be not null, so do I need to include this with each join? Here is a bit of code I have now. oDb is the DataContext

var oData = from c in oDb.CustomerAdditionalInfos
where ( c.CustomerID == CustomerID &&
c.CustomerNumber != null &&
c.CategoryID == CategoryID )
orderby c.CustomerNumber
select new { c.CustomerNumber };
return oData;

Web Forms :: Populating Multiple Dropdownlist Controls Using 1 XML File?

May 26, 2010 04:52 AM

I have 3 dropdownlist controls for use with capturing birth dates. One captures the month, the next the day and the next the year. Rather than having to use 3 different xml files to populate the controls I want to be able to use just 1 xml file, but I haven't been able to work things out. I thought this would work:

<dates>
<date month="1"/>
<date month="2"/>[code]....

I thought I'd be able to assign the datatextfield of month, day or year to a given control, but this isn't working. They show up in the datatextfield dropdown in properties, but when I try to view the page in a browser I get an error that tells me the field (i.e., day) does not exist. Is there a way I can accomplish this? I am developing an ASP.NET 2.0 site in VS 2005.

Populating DropDownList From Database?

Nov 21, 2008 10:26 AM

I have managed to populate my dropdownlist from my database but have a few questions. The dropdownlist is displaying a list of student names. however i was wondering whether you can populate the dropdownlist with more than one field?

What i need is when the form is submitted for the student name from the dropdownlist to be written to the database but for the ID of the selected student to be passed on to the confirmation page through the URL.

I know the code to retrieve the parameter on the confirmation page and how to add the paramter into the URL on the redirect line of code. just not quite sure how to use the names to write to the database but for the ID to be passed.

MVC :: Populating DropDownList, Other Then From A Database?

Jul 18, 2009 11:38 AM

I've read lots of different articles on DropDownList, but mostly all focus on populating it from a Database via a foreign key. This has been great so far, but my current website needs lots of drop downs that are not stored in the database. E.g.

Next to the Rent attribute there needs to be a Rent Type drop down with two values: 'per Week' or 'per Month'. This Rent type is not stored in the database, its simply used to convert weekly rents into monthly rents, and leaves monthly rents as they are (as Rent is stored as a monthly value). What is the best way to populate the drop down this drop down? To create a SelectList in the controller action each time? Or to create a custom html helper drop down (as its likely to be used elsewhere)? E.g.

There are a few other instances like this, for example, options on how the results are displayed: Order By (list of certain attributes), Results per Page (5,10,15) and Display Type (list of display types). None of these are stored in the database, and just effect how the results are processed.

Where is the best place to store all these select lists (as again, they are used across multiple pages)? Should I store them in the Business layer and then retrieve them in the controller and populate each list?

As i could just use seperate stored procedures and repeaters for each table i want to search, which is only 2, but this seems inefficient.

C# - Populating Dropdownlist Using MVC2 Based On Another Dropdownlist (Cascading)

Sep 18 10 at 22:41

I am making an application that deals with vehicles. I need two DropDownLists:

Makes: All Vehicle Makes
Models: Models that belong to the selected value of the Make DropDownList

How is this done in MVC2? My Idea: Do I use an ajax call when my first list is selected and then pull back the Models to bind to the Model DDL? How would model binding come into play that way? UPDATE I posted what I ended up doing as an answer. It is super simple and works great. You can use a get too if you feel so inclined, but you have to specify that you want to like so... return Json(citiesList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet);

Linq Mapping To Multiple Tables / How To Create The ORM Links Between The Objects And Tables

Aug 19, 2009, 08:09

Code:

off to a DB table "Products" with the column name specified and it works nicely. I am using this technique in a real-world app, as it handles the DB access layer nicely, but I need to be able to access several tables from my object. How can I do this - do I need to split my object up into a hierarchy that reflects its tables or can I access more than 1 table from the main object, with other additional objects hanging off it that have their own tables? If so then how do I create the ORM links between the objects and tables?

The DDL is getting populated as expected, but then I've added a label that will show the current selected item; for this I've written a code in DropDownList1_SelectedIndexChanged() :

Label1.Text = DropDownList1.SelectedValue.ToString();

I hae also enable AutoPostback for the DDL.
I have placed the PopulateDDL() method inside of the Page_Load();
But whenever I select a item, it's always giving only the first item's name as the Lebel.Text.
But when I use GUI and ceate a SqlDataSource and attach that to the DDL all works fine.
What to do??

Web Forms :: Populating Dropdownlist From Session Variable?

Nov 03, 2010 10:36 AM

To speed things up for the visitor of my web page, I put a personalised dropdownlist in a session variable (as below).

The idea is that if the user is logged in and the ddl session variable is Nothing then it should be set here, and the next times the dropdownlist should be set from this session variable.

The session seems to be populated ok, but the resulting dropdownlist (ddlMenu) doesn't (it just becomes blank). I suspect that it has soemething to do with the way I try to assign it. No matter what I try I run into problems, saying that one thing is a one-dimensional array and the other thing a listitemcollection, or the like. What should I write in the last line?

If Session("aid") IsNot Nothing And Session("ddl") Is Nothing Then
Dim ddlny As New DropDownList
ddlny.Items.Add(New ListItem(vstr, ""))
ddlny.Items.Add(New ListItem(kontrstr, "PageA.aspx"))
ddlny.Items.Add(New ListItem(bstr, "PageB.aspx"))
If dt IsNot Nothing Then 'dt is a datatable, populated elsewhere
For i As Integer = 0 To dt.Rows.Count - 1
ddlny.Items.Add(New ListItem(dt.Rows(i).Item("name"), dt.Rows(i).Item("did")))
Next
End If
Session("ddl") = ddlny
End If
ddlMenu.Items.Clear()
ddlMenu = Session("ddl") 'THIS IS THE LINE THAT SHOULD BE REWRITTEN.

Populating A DropDown List With Multiple Items?

Apr 30, 2010 10:05 PM

I am running into some additional difficulties with dropdown lists, and I'm hoping you can correct my thinking.

I have a table populated with items; ITEM_ID, ITEM_NAME, ITEM_COST.

Here is my code:

[Code]....

With this code I get this error: DataBinding: 'ITEM' does not contain a property with the name '2'.

If I remove the assignment of DataSource to c1, the dropdown generates this error: 'DropDownList3' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.

Parameter name: value

How should I code this so that the user is presented with a list of ITEM_NAMES, and that the ITEM_ID is stored in the value field so I can use it when the selection event is fired? I know I could databind the source directly to the dropdown list, but I am trying to understand the behind the scenes working of a dropdown list object.

'ImageFileDropDownList' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value

I have setup other drop down lists in the same formview populated from SqlDataSources and these all work fine. I can see perhaps why this is an issue because I have not specified a DataValueField or a DataTextField for this drop down that is populated in code (whereas I can for the SQL bound ones) because I'm not sure what these settings would be.
