C# - Store Class Properties In Session And Use Of Session Handler - Is It Good Design
Jul 27, 2010
I have a class called EditMapUtilities. Here are some class properties that I want to persist:
public class EditMapUtlities
{
public static Boolean isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get { return SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad; }
set { SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad = value; }
}
// REST OF CLASS NOT GERMAIN TO DISCUSSION AND OMITTED
}
Here is my SessionHandler Class following the pattern from this post Static Session Class and Multiple Users:
using System.Web.SessionState;
public static class SessionHandler
{
private static HttpSessionState currentSession
{
get
{
if (HttpContext.Current.Session == null)
throw new Exception("Session is not available in the current context.");
else
return HttpContext.Current.Session;
}
}
//A boolean type session variable
private static string _isInitialEditMapPageLoad = "EditMapInitialPageLoad";
public static bool isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get
{
if (currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] == null)
return true;
else
return (Boolean)currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad];
}
set
{
currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] = value;
}
}
}
I am still learning OOAD. I want to keep relevant properties with relevant classes. I also want to keep all Session stored variables in one place for ease of maintenance and to encapsulate the session keys and calls. I feel like my design is too coupled though. How can I make it more loosely coupled? Is my editMapUtilities class too tightly coupled to the SessionHandler class? How would you do it better?

Its related to datatable in gridview store in session and then session retrive and store to database. basically i am using gridview here creating new row for button click and these row adding untill user's last entry then submit all these entry to database. so i want to use session variable to store this data temporarily and after final entry user click on submit button and all data shold be save in db.

It's not explicitly written somewhere but I felt so after reading few blogs on ASP.NET MVC. Just got curious and thought of asking it here.
UPDATE: I'm not asking about memory/storage/RAM concerns on server. For them, there is a solution to store session out of process. I know that. I'm curious that, are there any scenarios where we had to use Session in WebForms but we can avoid it now in MVC taking benefit of the nice structured way offered by MVC?

Currently in an .aspx file, I am storing a value (filename that was created in that session) in an hidden text box. When the user clicks on the "Print" labeled Hyperlink control, it opens the file that was stored in the hidden text box control. But when the user goes to different screen (in the same session), I loose the filename value that is stored in the hidden text box control. So I would like to store the filename variable in a session variable. So that if the user leaves this .aspx file and comes back to this .aspx file I can load the value into the hidden text box from the session variable.

I've a requirement where i need to pass some objects across the pages. So i created a custom class with all the properties required and created a instance of it and assigned all the properties appropriately. I then put that object in the session and took it the other page. The problem is that even when i set the properties values to the class it is coming as null. I set a breakpoint in the getter-setter and saw that the value itself is coming as null.
public class GetDataSetForReports
{
private Table m_aspTable;
private int m_reportID;
private string m_accountKey;
private string m_siteKey;
private string m_imUserName;
/// <summary>
/// Asp Table containing the filters
/// </summary>
public Table aspTable
{
get
{
return m_aspTable;
}
set
{
m_aspTable = aspTable;
}
}
/// <summary>
/// Report ID
/// </summary>
public int reportID
{
get
{
return m_reportID;
}
set
{
m_reportID = reportID;
}
}
/// <summary>
/// All the accounts selected
/// </summary>
public string accountKey
{
get
{
return m_accountKey;
}
set
{
m_accountKey = accountKey;
}
}
/// <summary>
/// All the sites selected
/// </summary>
public string siteKey
{
get
{
return m_siteKey;
}
set
{
m_siteKey = siteKey;
}
}
/// <summary>
/// Current User Name
/// </summary>
public string imUserName
{
get
{
return m_imUserName;
}
set
{
m_imUserName = imUserName;
}
}
}
This is how i'm creating an instance in the page1 and trying to get it in the page2. Page1 Code
//Add the objects to the GetDataSetForReports Class
GetDataSetForReports oGetDSForReports = new GetDataSetForReports();
oGetDSForReports.aspTable = aspTable;
oGetDSForReports.reportID = iReportID;
oGetDSForReports.accountKey = AccountKey;
oGetDSForReports.siteKey = Sitekey;
oGetDSForReports.imUserName = this.imUserName.ToString();
But the values are not getting set at all. The values are not passing to the class (to the setter) at all. Am i making any OOP blunder?

I have a handler, like this, using IRequiresSessionState:
public class MyHandler : IHttpHandler, IRequiresSessionState
{
// code
}
In the code, I am able to read and set Session values. I also check ensure that the caller is logged in. That all works fine.
The web site uses forms authentication, so in the web.config, I have this:
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="Login.aspx" timeout="10" slidingExpiration="true"></forms>
</authentication>
The problem is that AJAX calls from the client to the server code MyHandler do not extend the life of the session!
So even if the user is busy sending and receiving data from the server, they time out 10 minutes after their last full page load.
In the handler, I've tried specifically changing a value is the session on each call, but not even that extends the time out.

I'm looking to build an ajax page; it's a reporting page. By default, load today's report. On the page there's a calendar control and when the user clicks on a date, reload the gridview with the corresponding data. Is it considered good practice to do the following:
1) on the first page load, query the data for the page
2) put the query result in the session object and display it in a gridview
3) if the user requests new data, get new data from the query with different parameters
4) put the result of the second query in the session object and display it
5) if the user then requests the data from the first query, get it from the session object
6) do the sorting and paging with the data held in the session.
Note: the data of each query will contain about 300-500 rows and about 15 columns. I'd like to do all this with ajax calls. What are some suggestions and pitfalls to avoid.

How, or maybe where, is the session timeout handled when you set SQL Server as state handler in an ASP.NET application?
Is it the .NET framwork who after loading session objects from the DB does a judgement on whether or not the objects are expired, or is it a job on the SQL Server itself that takes care of this? The reason I suspect (or even concidered) the latter possibility, is that the script that created the ASPState mentioned something about a ASPState_Job_DeleteExpiredSessions-element.
If it is so that it is an SQL Server job that cleans up, how often does this job trigger and how does it align with the timeout parameter in web.config?

im now using FancyUpload (flash upload) to allow user to upload files in a small project. I use Generic Handler to handler in server when user uploads his file, but i'm getting error: Can't get session in Generic Handler (.ashx) when using Firefox or Chrome etc except IE I read so many solution and finally found out that Flash has some bug that can't send cookie in Firefox or Chrome except IE, Maybe i can check the session in Flash before it's start to send the file to the server or check session in Generic Handler before save it

It was doing exactly what I expected until I added more than 1 property to it. It seems if I set the value of a property this, in turn, sets every property in the handler to the same value.
I figured it had something to do with the "shared" but if it's not shared then I would have to declare an instance on my page which would kinda ruin the state of my variables (otherwise, I'd just put them all in my class), right??

When the user logs in, I want to store his userID in the session with
HttpContext.Current.Session["UserID"] = 2354; (this is just a hard-coded example)
Then, when I run a page method, if I do
var test = HttpContext.Current.Session["UserID"];
will the variable test hold the value I stored when he logged in?
If this is a correct way of doing it, how do I access the session when I receive a call from a page method? I want to put the test =... line in a page method to identify which user the request is coming from.

I have a generic handler in which I fill up a Session variable. I implemented the IRequiresSessionState interface, so it shouldn't be a problem.
In a given page, I want to display that value, but it seems like the value is always empty. Is it because the session that is accessed and written to in the handler isn't the same one that is used on this page?
In the handler, I used context.Session["EID"] = "somevalue";
edit: i found out what the issue is but I do not know how to solve it. It's because I have this Java applet which reads out an eID, calls the handler to store the data, but the session used by the applet is not the same as the session used by the browser... so how could I exchange this data in a safe way?
