Changes In Master Page Doesn't Apply To Nested One?
Aug 4, 2010
I got a Master page and nested master pages in the subfolders. Top Level Master page Second Level Master page inherited Top Level Master page Third Level Master page inherited Second Level Master page However, changes (i.e. new images & alt. name) that I made in the Top level master page did not apply to the second or third levels. My webpage has a correct front page but not in the sections.

I have a nested master page that has its own master page. The parent master page has a property defined in its code behind.
Public ReadOnly Property SelectedPage() As String
Get
Return _selectedPage
End Get
End Property
How can I reference the parent master page's property from within either the child master page's code behind Page_Load or aspx template page?

I've encountered a problem when I put a treeview in a page which is using master page. The treeview style doesn't apply.For example, I set the nodes with different colors in different levels. But the treeview nodes are still displayed in the default color(bule).
The treeview code is :
[Code]....
If I use these code in a page which doesn't use a master page. The nodes are shown in colors.

I'm trying to dynamically change the look of my main master page depending on what nested master page that the current content page is using .
So for example.
Main master page = main.master
My nested page = nested.master (uses main.master)
content page = content.aspx (uses nested.master)
So in the Page_Load event of main.master I want to add a switch statement that will check to see what nested master page is currently being used by content.aspx, or whatever content page is loaded.
So far I have got
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
string nMaster = //This is the line of code that I am looking for.
switch(master)
{
case "nested.master":
//all my logic here.
break;
}
}

Actually the controls are in a user control on an aspx page that also uses a master page (if that matters)
I defined a table in the skin file with TableHeaderRow, HeaderTableCell. I added some formatting to these entries. The table defined in the control is not being skinned by this definition. If I add a "CssClass" on the TableHeaderCell in the control, the formatting works fine. If I add the CssClass to the skin it doesn't work.
Skin file:
<asp:Table runat="server" SkinID="dataTable" BorderStyle="None" CellPadding="0" CellSpacing="0" CssClass="table">

First off, suggest better ways if you want rather than patch up this code. I am just starting this project and it is first time I have tried to code a web site so anything you suggest is very much welcomed. I have spent the last 2 and 1/2 days trying to find workable answers to this but none I have found and tried seem to fit. If needed I can email screens shots or code. I am trying to construct a website that will have the same main theme throughout as far as the header, navbars sitemap, and footer go. Naturally the content will vary from page to page. I want to use a single master page and css stylesheet for this main theme and I will change the content format as needed per page because each page may vary somewhat.
However, about 15 of the pages will all use the same format for their content and this format will differ from the rest of the site but the format of the main theme will stay the same. So I am trying to create a nested master page to use to format the just the content area for all these pages while retaining the main theme for the header, etc.. I believe I should use a separate css file with the nested master page to handle the formatting of the content areas for these 15 pages. I have code that looks like it works when viewed in web developer but design view but does not work when viewd through a browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox). So far I have the following done in web developer.
If it helps the code and screen shots follow. Master Page called "Parent.master". For all theme throughout site Nested Master Page called "Lab.master". For the 15 like pages Primary stylesheet file for main theme called "StylesheetNew.css" For site theme Secondary stylesheet file to syle the 15 like formatted pages. It is called Labmaster.css Labs.apsx file to use as first of the 15 like pages.
Finally screens shots from web developer and browser. Sorry try as I might I could not capture screenshots and put them into this post. The problem is that web developer shows all the area (many lines high) with gray background and with the XXX text that I want to allocate for content in the 15 pages. Yet all the browser show is one line of text o a white background followed by the footer. It looks like the LabStyleSheet works in Web Developer but not in a browser.

I have a set of folders like this:

In the code above I tried <% ResolveUrl("~/StyleSheet.css") %> but didn't work, it works while in the same folder but not on the childs.
EDIT: Just to clarify my CSS file is on my Root Folder not on the childs

I wish to access a public property in a master page from a nested content page
is there anyway to do that without using "master type"
i found this link
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t110057-accessing-properties-from-nested-master-pages.html
but i dont understand what "companywide" is
((CompanyWide)this.Master.Page.Master).HtmlTitle = "now it is working";
i dont want to use "MasterType" i would rather cast..

On page load is there a way to enumerate all the nest user controls for that specific page load?
I'd like to be able to enumerate all the user controls that implement an interface, and call the interface method for the controls before asp.net passes control to thier page_load events.
The problem is from the master page level, any page in the app could be loading, and each of them could have any random user control, and I need the type reference to determine if they implement the interface, and to call the method.

All I want to do is access the <body> element from the code-behind of a content page and add a class name to it.
I have a top-level master page with the <body> element in it. Then I have a nested master page which is the master page for the content page. From the code behind of the content page I want to add a class name to the body element. That's all.
I have this in the top-level master:
<body id="bodyNode" runat="server">
I added this to the code-behind for the content page:
Master.bodyNode.Attributes.add("class", "home-page");
And I get a message that:
System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition for 'bodyNode
If I add this to the aspx content page:
<% @ MasterType VirtualPath="~/MasterPage.master"%>
The message then changes to:
bodyNode is inaccessible due to its protection level
I've wasted like 2 hours on what feels like something that should be really simple to do

I come from a windows dev environment so the web makes me feel like a big dummy.
I am using VS2008, VB.NET, 3.5 Framework, ASP.NET, AjaxControlToolkit.
I have included a screen shot that might help to look at while you read my attempt to explain my issue below!
I just recently discovered in a book here on my desk how to interact with a master page programmatically from a nested master page or a regular aspx child page. The method they describe makes sense and is familar to me because they use Public Properties on the master page to manipulate the GUI and controls on the master page. But since they are public, the child pages can see them and fire them off. Makes sense.
I thought I could use this method to do the opposite of that and have the master page fire off something (say a public property in a nested page) to have it then do some work and update things on that nested page.
For example,
I have a MASTERPAGE.MASTER. Under that, I have a LEFTNAV.MASTER (so its a nested master page). Then, under that I have my default.aspx page.
(I did that so that for some of my regular aspx pages I could just tie them directly to the master page so that they dont have a left navigation page...like for big charts or graphs, etc. Is that the best way for that by the way?)
So on the masterpage, I have just a simple asp.net search textbox and an asp.net search button. When they type something in and click search, I want it to add a tab to the AJAXControlToolkit - TabPanel that I have on the default.aspx page, then some other things such as update a datagridview there with the search results.
I can do all of this except the event firing and scope. I cannot see a way to make a button on the master page up top fire off an event that is on the default.aspx page to make it do what it needs to do.
What I tried doing was creating a public property on my default.aspx page. I have some actual code in the SET to do some GUI manipulation and change some stuff on the page. But on my master page within the search button's click event, I cannot see where to call this public property on the default.aspx page...

I have 2 nested master pages, lets call them MP1 and MP2. MP1 is top level, MP2 is level
2. Then I have several content pages. Lets say I have 2 content pages for now CP1 and CP2. Each content page has a form that will have some user input and a SaveData()function that saves the data to a database. Each content page also has a "Save" button that calls the SaveData() function.
MP1 and MP2 have several link buttons. The functionality I need is this: Any time a user clicks on a link button in MP1 or MP2, the SaveData() function of the currently loaded page should be called. This is to save the data even if the user forgets to click the "Save" button before leaving the page.
So far I can do this from the link buttons in MP2. I followed the master pages tutorial # 7
In the .cs file for MP2, I declare:
public event EventHandler SaveData;
then i raise a "SaveData" event any time a link button in MP2 is clicked.in every content page (CP1, CP2 etc.) aspx file, I have Master Type directive to assign the Master Page to MP2.
in CP1, CP2 etc .cs file, i have the following code:
protected void Page_PreInit(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//wire up the SaveData event from MP2 to Master_SaveData function in this page.
Master.SaveData += new EventHandler(Master_SaveData);
}
private void Master_SaveData(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//when the MP2 SaveData event is raised, save the data in this page.
SaveData();
}
All of this works fine.Problem is I am not able to do a similar thing from MP1.What I have tried so far is to raise an event in MP1 that is handled in MP2. When the event is handled in MP2, it raises the SaveData event to be handled in the page. The event in MP1 is null and hence never raised.

I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1
I have two master pages: TopLevelMaster and NestedMaster
When my page points to NestedMaster as it's master page, intellisense quits working in the .aspx page.
If I change my page to use TopLevelMaster as it's master page, intellisense works.
No matter what I use as the master I always get a green squiggly underline under the Content control that brings up a tooltip that says "Could not find ContentPlaceHolder1" in the current master page or pages"
TopLevelMaster exists in a different project than NestedMaster and the page.
When I say "intellisense quits working" here is what happens:
If I type something between the Content tags I get no intellisense for asp controls:
<asp:Content ID="Content1" runat="server" etc.., etc..>
Only html controls appear upon typing an open angle bracket here
</asp:Content>
If I instert a div element I can type an opening angle bracket and I see a list of all asp controls. If I choose one and start typing there is no intellisense after that:
<asp:Content ID="Content1" runat="server" etc.., etc..>
<div>
ASP controls appear but no intellisense other than asp:ControlName
</div>
</asp:Content>
Opening one or both master pages in the IDE has no effect.
I deleted Visual Sudio temp files.
