Mar 1, 2011I'm working on a project in which the client has required a lot of things to happen on a single page, and this has resulted in a rather large blob of HTML being rendered out to the client browser.
The main issue is with input tags (where runat="server" attribute is set), these tend to cause a drastic increase in markup size due to validation, updatepanel triggers, viewstate, and the control markup itself. I've done what I can to reduce the amount of triggers I'm using, I'm compressing the viewstate (to something like 8% of the original viewstate size), I've gotten rid of a lot of ASP.NET Validators and rolled my own, and and I've been using ClientIdMode to reduce the length of the ID attributes of many asp.net elements. All of these combined significantly reduces the amount of HTML being sent to the client, (for example going from 2 megabytes for a request down to 500-600 kb - these are HUGE pages, mind you).

Dec 2, 2010I'm using a third part control suite by Obout. I have a parent grid with two detail grids. One of the detail grids, grid2, has an edit template which generates a custom form. When I edit or add a record, I get the error The OboutDropDownList control 'ddlPosition' does not have a naming container. Ensure that the control is added to the page before calling DataBind.. Only the ddl(s) error. The textboxes, labels and calendars do not error if I comment out the dropdownlists. I'll attach the code.

Changing The CreatedBy Convention In Subsonic (3x)?
Mar 7, 2011I'm working against a database that wasn't designed by me and in all the tables there is a CreatedBy field that is an int. Now when I generate against this db i get all kinds of errors because subsonic is expecting that field to be a varchar.I don't particularly want to go and rename the field in all of these tables so I was hoping there was a way to "alter" or change the internal convention (without getting into the source) in subsonic.Has anyone been able/done this in subsonic 3.0.4??EDIT: I'm using the active record model in subsonic 3

Jun 4, 2010I don't think I understand fully how ASP.NET does inheritance of controls.I have a user control, ucBase, which has an asp.net label in the ascx file. Code behind references the label and it works fine during run time if the control is not a parent for another user parent.
If I have another user control, ucChild, inheriting from ucBase, the label in ucBase's code is always null. ucChild has no controls in its ascx fileThe server controls (like the label) needs to be declared in the ascx file and not created programmatically.What needs to be done for ucBase to see its own controls when it's a parent user control?

Mar 10, 2011I am loading .aspx and .ascx files as StreamReader.
I want each file to register it's javascript and stylesheet dependencies in some declaration like a <%@ ClientDependency path="~/Scripts/jquery-1.4.1.min.js" %>.
Is there an existing convention for doing such a thing? I don't need an implementation, but I don't want to create a new syntax if there is already a way to do it.
Also, what are the guidelines for custom <%@ blocks in ASP.NET?

Aug 24, 2010I'm trying to write a bit of code that will format all the numeric values in lables in my gridview. here's what i am doing right now:On the RowDataBound Event, i create a row object for the row that is currently being bound.then i go use the FindControl method to grab each label by name.Problem is there's too many columns in this table and i really dont wnat to have to type it all out. But now a new client wants a much more professional looking, commercial web application and they have a budget for some user components for use in the application. Any recommendations where value for money will be realised.
Interested in components that will integrate well with ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 or even .NET 4.
C# - Finding Out Is User Fully Completed Download Or Not?
Oct 13, 2010I have an webapp which dynamically generates a file and stores it on the server. When a user comes along, this file is served, after which it gets deleted. Each user gets their own generated file after which it becomes useless.Is there a way to know if the user managed to download the file fully, so that it may be deleted and not clogging up my server with outdated files?At the moment the problem is a user is clicking "Download file" then it being cancelled or failed, so they try again but its been deleted.

Mar 15, 2010There is a conflict b/w our team members about following the naming conventions. We have downloaded a document that specifies the naming conventions for the ASP.NET controls. But it does not covers all ASP.NET 2.0 controls, so there is basically a fight
over the naming conventions of the controls that are not specified in that document. Take for example : GridView Control, the naming convention for this control is not defined in the document, so I suggested 'gvw' for the prefix name but my team mates are
suggetsing 'gv' for that purpose. I had somewhere read before that the naming convention should contain either three or four letters of a control like TextBox can have 'txt' and ImageButton can have 'ibtn' as the identifying name as prefix.
