Iis - Viewing Development Server From Virtual Machine?

Nov 23, 2010

Microsoft recommends testing older versions of IE with the following virtual machinesThis is all fine and good, except that the virtual machines can't see the Dev Server from Visual Studio. This makes it very difficult to develop or debug since I have to copy or deploy to IIS for every little change I make. I've tried using ARR, but it seems it can only forward to one specific port at a time, whereas i need to have the port typed in the address bar of the virtual machine to match the port that it is connecting to on the host machine. Is this possible?

Configuration :: Adapter.Update (table) Fast On Development Machine, But Very Slow On Server?

Oct 17, 2010

Using VisualWebDeveloper 2010 on the development machine. All nice and fast.Using VisualWebDeveloper 2008 on the server. Server runs on Windows Server 2008 and has IIS 7.

It looks like that when 'table', a datatabe filled up in C# code behind, is getting longer, then the server (whether running the website on IIS or on the local host of VIsualWebDeveloper2008) is really slowing down. Checked it in debug mode and traced it down to

Adapter.Update(table);

Are there any know issues? Could it be that there is incompatibility between different version of SQL server or something like that? The update works, it is just awefully slow, but only on the server.

Forms Data Controls :: Strange SqlDataSource Behaviour Updating GridView On Server Vs Development Machine?

Jun 10, 2010

I'm having a strange problem - probably has a simple answer but, I haven't been able to find it or figure out the cause. I'm hoping someone has had this same problem and figured it out.

Basically - my application works great on the development machine. So I copy it over to the server and it works great. Come back the next day and my GridView is only displaying the first record...I then log into the server remotely and open the web page on the server and all records are returned, so the application works fine on the server. I then return to the local machine and now the application is returning all rows in the GridView. So, weird but, what whatever, it works. Go away and come back again the next day and...

1 ) Only 1 record from dataset is displayed in GridView

2 ) Log onto server remotely and view webpage on server --> all records now display

3 ) Try again on local machine, now application works fine...grr. What am I doing wrong here? Using Visual Web Developer 2008 on Windows XP. Querying SQL Server 2000 (I know, I should switch to 2005 and use VWD 2010 - but ouch, really!) when a text box value changes (Vendor_PO_TextBox.TextChanged)

Run ASP.NET Development Server "virtual Path" As An Application?

Oct 5, 2010

I want to run my new web application with forms authentication under the ASP.NET Development WebServer (Cassini), but not at site root "/" (rather, at the path it will reside in production; "/New").However, the build process gives the error:

"It is an error to use a section
registered as
allowDefinition='MachineToApplication'
beyond application level.This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.
New.MvcWebobjdebugcsautoparameterizeoriginalweb.config"

Now, I understand what it is saying.I have forms authentication enabled in my web.config in a virtual directory.The error goes away when I remove the web.config, or remove the "virtual path: /New" debugger configuration, or move debugging from Cassini to IIS and manually create an application at "/New".

But it is only a 'virtual' directory in the mind of the Build System. The path IS application-enabled in a production IIS setting. Also, if I remove the web.config, Cassini will happily publish "http://localhost/New" as an application (for example, Server.MapPath("~") returns my project directory without the "/New" suffix); however I need forms authentication (an application-level web.config parameter) enabled in it.How I can avoid this build error while retaining my desired features?

The project is currently configured for "file-system" site development. This and Cassini are supposed to make it easier for my content creators to participate in development and testing with their local copy of VS2010, without having to install IIS on their Windows PCs. I will also one-click publish to my local IIS for testing, then package/publish/deploy to public test, then finally publish to production. In my mind I imagine Cassini being a very helpful part of this whole process.

VS2010, MVC application, file-system site project

Project Settings:
* ASP.NET 4.0
* Use Visual Studio Development Server
* Virtual Path: /New

Debug Website On Host From Virtual Machine?

May 4, 2010

I have a Windows 7 machine hosting a Windows 7 virtual machine. I am developing a web application using visual studio 2010 on my host machine. I want to run the application in debug mode and access my localhost server from a browser on the virtual machine. (The purpose of this is to be able to debug an application that uses Windows Authentication using different users without having to log off and on for different users on my host machine...)

I am using a bridged connection for the virtual machine. I googled how to solve this problem and most of the threads that I found said that if I was using a bridged connection, I could access the server on the host machine by just entering the IP address of my host machine into the url in the browser of the virtual machine. I have tried some different urls using the IP but none of them have worked.

As an example, suppose I run my web application in visual studio on my host machine and its url is

http://localhost:62789/MyPage.aspx

Assume also that I ran ipconfig in CommandPrompt on my host machine and found out that the IP address for my host machine is xxx.xxx.xxx.x. What url should I enter on the virtual machine to access my web application?

EDIT:

I set up IIS to host the web project. After that, I just added the following line (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is my IP) to my hosts file and I was able to access the website from the virtual machine:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx MyWebsite.net

I also had to edit my firewall settings.

Virtual Machine Requires CppCodeProvider And VJSharpCodeProvider?

Feb 1, 2011

I've been dealing remotely with a weird situation with a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine that's running a ASP.NET 3.5 website... Or, at least is trying to run it.

The website was installed using the standard installer for the project, which has been used to install at several different locations. However, this one is behaving differently.

The website fails when it runs. In the Event Viewer, the following error is reported:

Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

The error is reported on the website as:

Exception Details: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The specified module could not be found.(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

Running the fusion log viewer, I can see that ASP.NET is attempting to load the following assemblies:

CppCodeProvider, Version=8.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a
VJSharpCodeProvider, Version=2.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a

First off, there is no reason why ASP.NET should be loading these assemblies. I can't find anywhere in machine.config or any other config where these assemblies are listed as required. We tried installing the 3.5 SDK, but neither was installed. I've only got version 10 of the CPPCodeProvider on my development machine.

What the heck is going on here??

NB: don't do a cursory google search and answer. Nothing I found applies. And if anybody answers

"Define DEBUG constant" and "Define TRACE constant"

Viewing File Using .net / To Copy/download File To Local User Machine And To Open

Nov 16, 2010

In our application, we allow user to upload documents which can be PDF, Doc, XLS, TXT. Uploaded documents will be saved on web server. We need to display link for each document user uploaded and when user click on that link, it should open relevant document. it is expected to have required software to open relevant documents.

To upload document, we use saveAs method of FileUpload control and it works absolutely fine.Now, how to view it?I believe, i need to copy/download file to local user machine and need to open it using Process.Start.For that i need to find user local temp directory. if i put path.GetTempPath(), it gives me web server directory and copy file there.

File.Copy(
sPath + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
Path.GetTempPath() + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
true);

Iis7 - Creating Cookieless Application On Development Machine

Feb 23, 2010

I am thinking about setting up a new domain to host static content on my website and have it cookieless just like Stackoverflow with their static domain. So before going ahead and buying the domain and setting it up I wanted to test it on my developement machine first under localhost (I have to mention that i am planning on having IIS running on my new domain for the static files). I therefore created a new application under IIS and disabled session state and forms authentication. When my main application needs resources like css, images and js , I use the path to the "static" application where they are hosted.

The problem is that when I look at the request and the response for the requested files, they still have the session_id cookie defined as well as the asp.net authentication cookie. Is it at all possible to accomplish what i am trying to do on a development machine or do i have to just go ahead and purchase the new domain which hopefully with make things right? I tried to read about cookieless domain but can't figure out what i might be missing.

Does Server.MapPath Behaves Differently In Local Machine And Server Machine

Jul 1, 2010

I have had a real nightmare with Server.MapPath(). When I call Server.MapPath("~") in my application that is running in ASP.NET Development Server it returns root directory that ends in a back slash like f:projectsapp1, but I call it in published version, installed in IIS, it returns root directory without any back slash like c:inetpubwwwrootapp1.

string mainRoot = HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~");
DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(mainRoot);
//added to solve this problem with Server.MapPath
if (!mainRoot.EndsWith(@""))
mainRoot += @"";
FileInfo[] files = di.GetFiles("*.aspx");
foreach (FileInfo item in files)
{
string path = item.FullName.Replace(mainRoot, "~/").Replace(@"", "/");

SQL Reporting :: Unable To Load Client Print Control - From Development Machine

Feb 1, 2010

I have googled and searched the forums for an answer to this but nothing seems to fit.

I have installed the SP1 release of SQL 2008 Report Viewer Distributable and the SP1 of 2005 as well. My report viewer control is pointing at version 9.0.0.0 in the page references and web.config.

The problem is when clicking on the print icon i get the ActiveX control install prompt, click install it disappears briefly and I then get the "Unable to load client print control error". This is happening on my development machine.

Under the C:WINDOWSDownloaded Program Files folder i have a control with the name {0D221D00-A6ED-477C-8A91-41F3B660A832} I have tried removing this and allowing the ActiveX to install again, but this has made no difference.

I have the "Unable to load print control" on two live web servers so want the control working on my development machine before i tackle the issue on the servers.

Alternatives For Server-side PDF Viewing?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm looking at options for rendering PDFs on the server to avoid the user having to download them (they're big docs) and/or have a PDF reader installed and configured (audience is not tech savvy). The Google Viewer and Scribd are nice examples, but I'm not interested in making the PDFs available on the web (for Google) or storing them on another party's servers (Scribd).

My favorites right now are FlexPaper and PDFWebViewer.NET but I wanted to see if I'm missing any other options. Most of the related SO questions on this topic are somewhat dated, so maybe there's something new?

On Client side, I'm trying to read the cookie saved from code behind on page load using the snippet above, but it returns undefined
